I've had this issue myself but i rarely if ever play on public servers so i cant really help in that regards but i know of a site that could, check this out: http://master.bistudio.com/?page=1&count=10&game_id=6 for the name box (left) you can put the name of a mod you play with and all the servers using that mod would be listed and you can connect on that list via steam.
