Dark Browser Themes - Stop Burning Your Eyes

Recommended Posts

Your eyes are precious, take care of them.

Recently I was combating some remaining bright elements in Firefox so I thought to share what addons and themes I found useful. Speaking of themes, this very window I'm typing in at the moment is STILL white! Please BIF, change edit tittle and post body areas background color to grey when using dark forum theme.

Anyway, let's get to it. First step, invest in some shades or blinders for you actual windows if sunlight is directly hitting your monitor but don't make your room dark either. With that done, lets move on to software. I'll be focusing on Firefox addons since that is what I'm using at the moment but most are also available for other web browsers as well.

Note: if you hover your mouse cursor over the link, it's address is usually displayed in bottom-left corner of your web browser. Most links below are for GitHub and official Firefox Addons page though.

ShadowFox - A universal dark theme for Firefox.

Extending the Dark Theme - System-wide solutions for your OS, browser plugins and themes. Some I listed below.

Tip: Windows 10 versions 1809 and newer also support dark theme for it's File Explorer but updates above 1803 may also come with some horrendous problems. In version 1903 for example, SearchUI.exe (part of windows 10 search framework) can cause incredibly high CPU usage even when idle. There is a workaround but still, be aware.

Dark Background and Light Text - Let's you customize the background, text, link colors etc.

Alternatively, use Dark Reader, also excellent.

Stylus - Implement custom userstyles.

  • Stylus-Dark - This dark theme is specifically designed to match the dark mode used by Firefox's inspector and browser toolbox. Additionally, it is meant to compliment ShadowFox.
  • Mozilla-Dark - A dark theme designed for the .mozilla.org domains.

  • GitHubDark - A highly customizable dark theme for GitHub domains.

  • Wikipedia Dark - Applies to all Wikimedia wikis (wikipedia.org, wikidata.org, wiktionary.org, etc.), Wikidot wikis and the Arch Linux wiki.

Few other Add-Ons that you may find useful:

  • Firefox Multi-Account Containers - Lets you keep parts of your online life separated into color-coded tabs that preserve your privacy. Cookies are separated by container, allowing you to use the web with multiple identities or accounts simultaneously.
  • Cookie AutoDelete - Control your cookies! This extension is inspired by Self-Destructing Cookies. When a tab closes, any cookies not being used are automatically deleted. Prevent tracking by other cookies and add only the ones you trust. Easily import and export your cookie whitelist.

  • uBlock Origin - An efficient blocker add-on for various browsers. Fast, potent, and lean.

  • Decentraleyes - According to statistics, like these from W3Techs, a lot of websites make you load vital files through large third-party services like Google Hosted Libraries, and jQuery CDN (StackPath). Decentraleyes complements regular content blockers (e.g. uBlock Origin, and Adblock Plus).

  • HTTPS Everywhere - Extension that encrypts your communications with many major websites, making your browsing more secure.
