What is our unit?

The Essex Regiment is a Second World War UK based unit that attempts to recreate a realistic portrayal of the British military during the mid 20th century period. We are a serious milsim, meaning that when on operations, members should be serious and follow designated procedures. The Essex Regiment focuses mainly on conventional warfare, meaning most missions will be lively and kinetic. Occasionally we may also perform counter-insurgencies and other less conventional operations.

The Essex Regiment uses a rank system based on the British Army during the Second World War period. In our unit, players will receive promotions and commendations based on their merit and dedication with the unit and not solely based on their role. This means that members will be rewarded for their capability, knowledge and time devoted to the unit.

Who is our unit based on?

We are based on the Essex Regiment. It fought during many of the different campaigns throughout the Second World War. From the battle of France in 1940 until the fall of Germany in 1945. Our unit won't strictly follow all the campaigns followed by the Essex Regiment as we feel that campaigns such as Norway and Burma and others set in the final days of Empire will allow for differentiation in combat and environment. However the unit will try to stick as close as possible while keeping game-play fun and engaging and will undertake campaigns in a chronological order of events mirroring the events of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath.

When do we play?

We have two events a week. We conduct exercises and training on thursdays at 2000 GMT (in summer this changes to GMT+1) and operations on sunday at 2000 GMT (again changing to GMT+1 in Summer).

How can I join?

If you're interested in joining our unit, you must be of 16 years of age or above. If you are below 16, it is possible that you may still join the unit but you must have a mature attitude. The interview process will take a bit longer as your place in the unit will be discussed with other interviewers. Operation Mercury: Palestine 1936 - 1938

Following a general strike and increasing domestic violence the British Army deployed to the Mandate of Palestine to reestablish British control and authority. This resulted in elements of the local population taking up arms and instigating an insurgency against the British administration. Members of 2nd Battalion, The Essex Regiment were deployed to the region and were responsible for patrolling the hinterland to the south of Jerusalem and mounted a number of patrols which isolated and disrupted the dissidents activities.

Invasion of Norway: Close Target Recce

Following the withdrawal of the BEF from Dunkirk and the German invasion of Denmark and Norway in mid 1940 a British and French expeditionary force has been dispatched to help force the Germans out of Norway. After landing in the advance party, the men of 2ER recce'd and then raided a Naval Gun Emplacement taking it out of action and enabling the remainder of the British forces to land on the surrounding beaches. However the raiders were cornered on the headland and forced to fight tooth and nail against the subsequent counter attack.

2ER is a Arma 3 Community which thematically bases itself on British Infantry organisation and tactics of the Second World War and immediate aftermath (up too 1967). We pride ourselves on our tactical gameplay; on our engaging, challenging and varied missions; and most importantly on our friendly and welcoming community. If you would like to know more or join a British WW2 unit then take a look at our steam group here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Essex_Regiment or add one of the group admins on steam.

Sunset, Sand and Suppressing Fire!
Members of 2ER conducted a series of night and day attacks and ambushes aiming to hone thier urban fighting skills. Accurate and effective firesupport is essential when fighting within and around the urban environment. Within 2ER the Bren Group of each section provides this to good effect, making it an increadibly important element of our tactics.

Exercise Osprey - Mechanised Infantry
Following 2ER's transition to Mechanised Infantry and redeployment to the Middle East the platoon has taken sometime to familiarise itself with the carriers on Exercise Osprey. Exercise Osprey saw the platoon pratice destroying a segment of a frontline and then exploiting through onto supporting positions. The introduction of the carriers opens up a range of new possibilities and increases the fighting endurance of the unit. Exercise Osprey also saw the first run out of the Assault Pioneer Section equipped with demolition charges, 60mm Mortars and Anti-tank Rifles. With the familiarisation period complete we are now ready to join the Battle for North Africa.

Exercise Swift - Air Assault

The Suez Crisis looms on the horizon. In preparation for the impending invasion to 'secure' the Suez Canal and prevent clashes between the Israeli and Egyptian forces the British Army has been experimenting with the application of Helicopters following the example set by the Americans. Operation Musketeer will see the first application of Air Assault by the British army and 2ER will be one of these new Air Assault forces and as such has been training and practising this form of warfare.  The introduction of the Westland Whirlwinds has opened up a range of new tactical capabilities and dramatically increases the mobility and shock potential of the platoon. However it significantly more risky than our previous roles and leaves us fully dependent on our airborne lifeline for supplies and combat support.

Operation Musketeer:

Following the outbreak of naked aggression between Isreal and Egypt in 1956 and the imperilment of the Suez Canal the British and French Armed Forces have intervened. 2ER, employing experimental air assault tactics, were tasked with raiding a district headquarters in order to dislocate local resistance and were then tasked with seizing a newly constructed airfield intact so that it could later be used by the RAF to police and control the region.

Overall Operation Musketeer (I through III) was an exciting and welcome addition to our usual missions set in the Second World War with everyone enjoying the increased firepower of the SLR but also lamenting the reciprocal increase of firepower held by the enemy. The role of Airmobile Infantry also provided a myriad of new and challenging situations for the section commanders and allowed the newly formed 137 Squadron to prove their worth in a challenging environment.

Operation Battleaxe:

After receiving reinforcements and resupply the British Desert Army was once more ready to embark on offensive operations across the Egyptian-Libyan border with the aim of driving the Axis back and relieving Tobruk. Initially the offensives went well, 2ER forming part of Escarpment Force, Destroyed a number of Axis Anti-tank and Anti-Air emplacements as they advanced towards Fort Cappuzzo. The fight for the Fort was brutal and close, with 2ER attacking at night with the support of 137 Squadron. The following day the operational environment was very different. Desert force had been beaten back and the Afrika Korps threatened to isolate and destroy Escarpment Force. The British began to withdraw back to their initial positions and 2ER were ordered to delay the enemy at Fort Capuzzo for as long as they could.

Malayan Emergency 1958:
In 1958 2ER rotated into Malaya and took up an active role fighting the Malayan Communist Party. Our platoon was instructed to conduct long range jungle patrols in order to find and disrupt MCP activity in their own back garden. The jungle proved to be a hostile and challenging environment and the learning curve was huge, after a series of initial recce patrols and skirmishes we had gathered enough intelligence to start attacking hard targets and destroy vital stockpiles of food and ammunition.

Following the systematic destruction of their camps and patrols the MCP withdrew and regrouped at a Village we had named London. Realising that we could not contain these forces, which were increasing in strength, morale and defensive capability at an alarming rate, the platoon went on the offensive. With intimate close air support provided by 137 Squadron the platoon was able to systematically destroy the enemy in and around London with minimal losses.

If you are interested in joining a Realism Community which focuses its operations on the Second World War and the Conflicts of the Cold War then 2ER might be for you. We are a friendly and chatty bunch who play a range of games alongside our primary focus on Arma 3. Operation Lion-heart

The Chernorussian Peoples Party has staged a coup and become the defacto power in Chernogorsk District and threatens to  overthrow the moderate, and neutral, government in the surrounding districts. At the invitation of the Republic of Chernarus, and with promises of aligning itself with NATO, 2ER finds itself at the front of a invasion force sent to defeat the rebels and facilitate the return of the legitimate government. After initially establishing themselves in the NE at a temporary airfield 1 Platoon were airlifted in and occupied a forward assembly area north of the regions main military base (code named Heath-row) and conducted an extended fighting patrol in the immediate region of the assembly area. During this fighting patrol 1 Platoon engaged and successfully destroyed 4 independent section strength patrols, 1 BMP and 1 BDRM and resultingly assured the immediate security of the assembly area from which offensive operations can be launched onto vital enemy installations in future missions.

If you are interested in joining a friendly and open community which focuses its activites on a British Infantry platoon in the Second and Cold War Periods then 2ER may be of interest to you.
