brgnorway 0 Posted November 23, 2002 I aplied to the norwegian forces in Bosnia early on but was categorized as "not fit for duty" because of permanent hearing damage. It's ironic that my hearing was damaged while serving in the coastal artillery  Jokes aside, no I wouldn't be willing to join UN forces now. I have a family and to many obligations to do so, such as finishing my degree at university and paying back my loans that enabled me to study. If I had no one to think of except for myself I would have no problems risking my life while helping others. If there were a high risk of getting killed I think I would have second thoughts though. bn880 5 Posted November 23, 2002 Again, "willing to die" is the wrong question. What's the point of going to die? You are always better off not dying don't you think.

Othin 0 Posted November 23, 2002 Yes, because if I was ever working for the U.N. I would have to trust in either my own decision to join, or the decision of someone higher up to put me in a position where I'm under the command of the U.N.
Guest Posted November 23, 2002 Being on peace keeping missions is not just a noble cause, but it is a very interesting and valuable personal experience. When I went to Kosovo, my motivation wasn't I'm afraid at all altruistic, but very selfish: I was looking for a new experience. There are so many weird things you encounter in a country that has been shot to hell. This for instance: We were checking out an Serbian early warning radar station that had been bombed by NATO. We didn't find anything of real interest - they had apparently managed to get the equipment out before they were bombed. We found two very interesting things: An American flag and a tourist photo of Dubrovnik (which the Serbs had bombed a couple years earlier). Me with my loot Edit: Oh, yeah, I forgot: we also found an old Norwegian TV there

ralphwiggum 6 Posted November 23, 2002 I'd say denoir has subconcious love of US. otherwise why would he take it? come on denoir, it's ok to admit that you secretly admire US... Â back on topic, my answer would be conditional. I'm not much of a soldier type. probably the closest i'll ever come to military would be OFP and my handgun shootings. but if i get to work at UN or other international organization that maximizes my interest(economics) than i'd go on with them. Col. Kurtz 0 Posted November 23, 2002 If I was part of a UN Peacekeeping force and was sent over to some country in Africa for example where there was a civil war asnd I was killed over there, I would think that at least I died for a somewhat noble cause (trying to stop people killing each other)
Balschoiw 0 Posted November 23, 2002 If you join forces that take part in UN missions you know that there is the risk of death. So it should be part of your thinking process to deal with it before you join. I guess anyone that is with UN knows about the risks, so the topic is pretty senseless.
Guest Posted November 23, 2002 The topic is sensless for those who have made the choice already, but not to those who are considering it (or not considering it).
