Col. Kurtz 0 Posted February 24, 2003 All the planes that are in the patches can be flown online on servers that allow it. Custom paint jobs etc, can be seen by other planes, thats why if you play a online game you are likely to see lots of diffrent paint jobs on planes.

First I had some joystick issues, then we had a middair when both of us turned towards each other...and in short it took a while before we got into a decent dogfight. Tex had me pretty worried on one occasion, when we were playing hide and seek in some clouds, I saw him reapear almost behind me, and turning hard to get on my six.  I knew I would combust into flames almost as soon as his cannons started hitting me, so I turned as hard as I could at around 500km/h diving, and in my maneuvering to evade him I blacked out almost completely.I  thought I was a gonner, but I guess his 109 couldn't handle the turn either...in the end he made the mistake of not practicing what he preached, he tried to turn-fight with me instead of using his superior climb and acceleration. *edit* in case anyone wonders what that horizontal line in the first screenshot is that's parallel to the horizon, that's smoke streams from the AA defences of the German  base. Renagade 0 Posted February 24, 2003 I found the best tactic in wwII type air ims is to get really high then rocket down from above and smash into the other guys plane f*ck the cannons, nothing beats a 500 mile an hour air torpedo ps, the same rule applies to racing games where ur main goal should not be winning the race but instead to ram the other cars off the road as hard as possible and rear end them when they try to pass THEN ram them off the road again. Tex -USMC- 0 Posted February 24, 2003 Good job Tovarish, thanks for being so charitable about my (lack of) skills. I spent half the game running my Gustav into the ground and the other half getting chewed up by Tovarish. Oh well, there will be a re-match!
Col. Kurtz 0 Posted February 24, 2003 Did you's only have one digfight? Anyway, congrats on proving that you can rule the skies.
Tovarish 0 Posted February 24, 2003 Like I said we tried to have more but technical diffficulties and then several inflight misshaps prevented from having a lot of desicive fights...and I had to call it quits before too long...have a prelab to write up . And I'm not proving that I rule the skies, just that one man's "flying coffin" is another man's dream plane, all depends on tactics and personal taste....to me the Me-109's and Fw-190's are flying coffins...I can't BnZ too well and I can't stall-fight worth crap

Col. Kurtz 0 Posted February 24, 2003 And for all the bad players there can be a 'who can crash their plane the fastest'compition that we film With all this discussion, I think I'm going to have to install IL-2 again and try and improve my skills for FB. And I might look at getting a Joystick. Anyone got recomendations on a joystick? I'd probably spend $50 US at the most.

Can't personally say how it works, but should know soon. I just found out one is in the mail for my B-day (thanks mom, love you). At the same time I am going to be sad to retire my old HOTAS. I have a gameport CH Pro Throttle with an orginal M$ Sidewinder 3D pro plugged into it. This combo has held me steady since 94, so it's been going strong for nine years! Damn, I thinks it's lasted me so long and no sign of dieing. No spiking, nothing. The M$ stick has a touch of drift to it, but a small deadband in a game gets rid of it. Amazing. Tex -USMC- 0 Posted February 24, 2003 Technically I'm competent, and fighting against dumb AI (or dumb humans, for that matter) I can pull off stupid stuff like yank n bank with a 109. It's just when I go online and run into folks who know better, I get my clock cleaned. I need to polish up my tactics, and then we can rematch

Complete HOTAS, Rudder control, ect is secondary in my opinion. This is what I use: Logitech Wingman Force 3d.Cost about $80 Canadian, has a slider for throttle, and a twist handle for rudder which I locked in place because I couldn't stand it, (there was no way of turning without setting off the rudder to some degree) and I mapped rudder controls to the two base buttons. 7 buttons in total incluiding trigger trigger for MG's 1 button for cannon 1 for rockets or bombs 2 for flap controls and 2 buttons for rudder That's my quasi-HOTAS setup . SKULLS_Viper 0 Posted February 24, 2003 You need 1.1a and 1.2 for the patches. You dont need 1.2 OV,(unless you want voice overs). You can also enable gore, but its not worth seeing.Just a little red splirt all over the canopy(only seeable in 3rd person view) and only on certain planes. Just go to the config file, and under [game] go to HighGore=0 and change it to 1. Also, USMC sniper, you might be talking about the BI-1 rocket, which is the only flyable jet in IL-2 at the moment.Forgotten Battles will have a flyable ME-262 . Col. Kurtz 0 Posted February 24, 2003 Well I installed IL-2, set all the settings to realistic (minus no outside view, although I did not use the outside view in my 'serious' dogfights) and went and played some quick battles with the AI. I can now say that I can confidently fly around with realistic settings, its just those dogfights I have trouble with. Imagine having to keep your hands on your arrow keys to steer the plane, on the trigger keys (which I set to right ctrl and num0 to make it a bit easier for myself), and on the mouse to find targets. Its not too bad for taking out bombers, they don't do any serious manouvering. I have found that the cannon of the Yak-9T is very good for blowing the tails off planes. Then I tried a dogfight up against the pesky I-153. The first battle I wasn't really on to it, and it got onto my tail while I was flying a Me-109E/4. I did a few crazy manouvers to shake it off, and on the last one the I-153 was so close that he collided with each other snaping wings so we both went down. After that they didn't get me, but I didn't get them. In one fight I was coming right up the tail of the I-153 when suddenly it dropped verticly straight for the ground and dissaperad, nasty trick. Using a bit of rudder when shooting at a bomber can be a good way to cause a few separate fuel leaks on the wings. SKULLS_Viper 0 Posted February 25, 2003 I just use a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro that I bought for about $30, and it has 1 trigger button, 3 thumb buttons, a hat switch with 8 dirrections, 5 base buttons, and a throttle, plus the rudder left, and right.Pretty good joystick I had for about 2 years, and still lovin it. god, I will never go back to the keyboard flying again.I got use to flying with the keyboard, but I just wanted alittle more realism, so I just bought my self a joystick.I'm glad I did. But I don't think Microsoft sells that joystick anymore though.Other then the 2nd version.
