3 FPS Bug and Random Crashes

Hi @GanX. Thanks for your well thought out post. I am a mission maker for a similar size mil-sim group and we are suffering badly from this bug and I am able to reproduce the crash at will with a number of my missions.

I am in the middle of testing your suggestion above and for the first time I've been able to get past the 1 hour mark without crashing. I have a suspicion you may have stumbled upon a brilliant interim measure. I'll run further tests over the next week and will report back.

I'd be keen to hear if anyone else has success using this method.

Hi @pabloelkillo

We have a small mission tonight where i will test this myself. We are usually around 10-15 people during our Thursday operations so it won't be quiet the same amount of people as we get during prime time when we are 40+. I will however also report my findings and i am looking forward to hearing how it turns out for you. I have access to an array of computers, servers and installations so feel free to give me feedback or suggestions for testing and i will get right on that. That goes for everyone reading this, I and TAW is always happy to help where we can, feel also free to PM me or add me on steam.

Cool. We play for 3-4 hours with about 40 players every Monday and Tuesday night so I'll report back then.

There are a few guys in my group who aren't affected by this issue so I asked them the following question:

"For those who are not experiencing the "3 FPS then crash" issue, are you running -maxMem=2047 as a launch parameter by chance?"

So far, 100% of those who don't have the issue are running that parameter

Furthermore, I crashed out of every mission I played this week and up until today I crashed out of every mission I tested for over an hour. I added -maxMem=2047 to my launch parameters this afternoon and since then I've run two missions for well over an hour and haven't had a single crash.

I'm starting to get optimistic about this.

That is great news! I will get as many people in my group to try the same to see if we can produce the same outcome. It would be great if this is the case, i think i will make a post about this if it turns out to solve the issue so other people can benefit from this as well. But lets do some more testing before we get ahead of ourselves.

I found playing on maps with smaller objects creates a better and longer gameplay then on maps like Tanoa and Altis. I'm running a Alive server on Pakistan with OPF set to 400 Battalion Size and BLU at Company size of 200 and a AO of 6000Sq and I was able to play at least 3 hours without crashing or FPS drops to 3.

Hi Ladies and Gents

I can play arma between 30 - 40 min before a massive FPS drop and then black screen. I have to go into the task manager and end the task to get out of it. So here is one of the error's i got out of the .rpt file

Both are very similar and I am lost as to what to do next. After reading I'll try the maxMem and report back

I don't know if it's the same bug but here is my problem.. the game goes suddenly to about 2-4 fps , and textures and objects start missing or disappearing from the screen and it's really laggy , for an example I could wear a backpack uniform and a hat and the screen will only show my backpack and hat with no character.. after a few minutes of waiting to see what happens the game just crashes and obviously not playable or I have to restart it and it will probably happen again after 30-45 minutes of gameplay...

Is this the same bug?

I can play for 60-120min before I get this bug.

Comp:

I7-4770k OC 4.1g

32gig Crucial Ballistic memory

GTX 780TI

SSD 500gig

What start up parameters should I try?

Try setting max memory to 2047 and let us know how you go. It seems to be working for me but needs more testing.

@dwarden A few of us in this thread are testing what seems to be a workaround to the "3 FPS then crash bug" by setting max memory to 2047. Early testing had shown very positive results. We'll keep testing and will report back here. Credit to @GanX for the idea.

I did a bunch more testing using -maxMem=2047 yesterday and still no crashing.

I hope this is useful.

Hi,

A lot of people here are asking to try the "-maxMem=2047" launch option, and all the reports posted here seems to say "Yeah it's working! I'll keep using this option and I will tell you if I have any issue."

Well... It didn't work at all for me :( (I think I'm the first guy who say that on ths topic... sorry :(  )

Here the hardware and the settings i use :

CPU: Intel Core i7 5930K, 3.5 GHz, 6 cores (12 with hyper-theading)

RAM: 16 Go

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980

No SSD, only a HDD

Video Options:

Everything maximized, except...

Sampling 100% (Resolution: 1920x1080, Fullscreen)

Overall and Object visibility: 3200

VSync disabled

No Bloom / Blur / DoF

Brightness, gamma, contrast, saturation and sharpen filter to default

The issue happens in several multiplayer game modes (PvP / PvE). I don't play in singleplayer anymore, so I haven't tried in this mode. Performances are good, until the drop to 3 fps :(

I did some tests with the following launch parameters (tried all combinations) :

-exThreads=7

-enableHT

-maxmem=2047

-maxvram=2047 and -maxvram=4095

-noLogs

I also tried some modifications in the config file.

Now, I have some questions:

When the people says "I have this bug", they often tell a lot of things about the situation (map, time, AI, explosions, sounds, ...). But when they come here to say "This solution works", they only say (in gerenal) "I played for X hours without crashing". Well... on which map ? How many AI ? Explosions ? How "intense" was the fights ? Did you fly ? Did you crash a vehicle ? Did you complete a lot of objectives ? ... All the details should be said by the guys who don't crash too, to check if the results can be used or not :)

Thanks !

For me, I've been doing my testing using two missions. The first is on Altis and the second on Lingor. Both in the forests. Both missions are heavy infantry only contact (approx 40 on 40 at any one time) lasting for a couple of hours. I'm using these missions as I would regularly crash in them before I made the change. I'm using DAC to spawn and control the AI.

My start up parameters:

parameters

The only change I have made to my parameters is max mem.

The critical error in my .rpt is ErrorMessage: DX11 error : CreateTexture failed : E_OUTOFMEMORY

@Faelucc Could you please confirm the bug you experienced while running 2047 max mem resulted in the same message in your .rpt? There a few crash bugs floating around at the moment and I just want to make sure we are talking about the same one :)

@pabloelkillo Thanks for the feedback!

I should also tell that i'm playing without mod.

I know i have the same bug ("DX11 error : CreateTexture failed : E_OUTOFMEMORY") before i use the "-maxmem=2047", but you're right, i did'nt check the rpt file with this parameter. I will do it as soon as possible. (Honestly, i hope this is the same bug... I don't want to deal with a new one ><)

Also tried to switch back to maxmen 2047. Can't say anything yet but when I run Arma with this I get weird popups of trees and buildings...

Tried the  -maxMem2047 param on a Exile server with  X-Cam-Taunus map, where the occurence of the frame bug is lot higher then on Tanoa. Still got the frame bug, but was after ~40 minutes, normally on this map I cant player longer then 15 minutes without getting the frame bug.

Here the result:

Command line parameters: "C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma 3\arma3.exe" -exThreads=7 -enableHT -maxmem=2047 -mod=

Played for 1h45 on 2 differents PvE servers. On Altis with infantry, ground and air vehicles (as passenger), explosions, heavy fights, lots of AI, more than 50 players (everything you can expect in Arma 3...).

I played for >1h longer than usual, but this is "normal" when i reduce the view distance to 1600m (which was the case here, cause i forgot to change the server specific settings...)

In the rpt file, as always: "DX11 error : CreateTexture failed : E_OUTOFMEMORY" several times during the 3fps drop (with a lot of memory stats), and repeated at the end of the logs (cause of the crash).

So it seems to be the same bug with and without the "-maxmem=2047" parameter :(
