Quote:

"One of the finest all-weather attack planes of the US Navy, the Grumman A-6 Intruder is still in front line service, in increasingly up-to-date versions, particularly as regards electronics and armament. In 1957 the Grumman emerged as the winner in competition with eleven other rival designs entered by eight companies. The first prototype flew on April 19, 1960, and the first A-6A of the series went into service on February 1, 1963; 488 of them were built by the end of 1969. The second basic version was designed exclusively for electronic warfare. Named EA-6B (and stemming from an initial sub-series of 27 models), the prototype appeared on May 25, 1968; the fuselage and cabin were modified to accommodate four crew members as well as a highly sophisticated electronics system, so that it was soon recognized as the best carrier-based aircraft for this type of warfare. The final variant of the Intruder was the A-6E, dating from February 1970, even further improved and more powerful."

EDIT:RalphWiggum: pic size > 100k

And as far as I understand it's still in use today.

The skin I'm using is just for planning stage and not finished product. As I've got lots of photo's and information on the A-6's.

The A-6 Intruder was retired in the early 90's, ending it's career as the Navy and Marine's primary strike aircraft- however, the A-6 design is still in service today in the form of the E/A-6B Prowler, a ECM/Jamming aircraft.

Here's the core info:

Designed in the late 1950s, the A-6 is an all-weather long-range carrierborne attack aircraft able to operate by day or night. The first of six YA-2F1 prototypes flew on April 19, 1960 with the first of 482 production A-6As being delivered to the US Navy beginning in 1963. The Intruder played a large role in the Vietnam war, flying over 35,000 combat sorties by 1973.

The definitive version is the A-6E which includes an APQ-148 multi-mode Doppler radar with terrain mapping and track-while-scan capabilities. Included beneath the nose radome is a laser spot tracker and laser ranger and designator. All A-6Es in service are due to be retired by the year 2000.

I'm using the following information from the USNavy Fact Files WWW.

A-6E Intruder

Last updated: June 16, 1999

Service: Navy and Marine Corps

Description: The A-6E Intruder is a carrier-based medium attack bomber.

Mission: The A-6E was developed for conventional ground attack in all weather conditions day and night.

Features: The A-6E is an all-weather, two-seat, subsonic, carrier-based attack aircraft. In spite of its weight, it has excellent slow-flying capabilities with full span slats and flaps. The crew, sitting side by side, can see in all directions through a broad canopy. The aircraft is equipped with a micro-miniaturized digital computer, a solid state weapons release system, and a single integrated track and search radar. The Intruder is armed with laser-guided weapons and equipped with a chin turret containing a forward-looking infra-red (FLIR) system and laser designator and receiver.

The A-6 worked around the clock in Vietnam, conducting attacks on the targets with a pinpoint accuracy unavailable through any other aircraft at that time. The A-6E proved once again that it is the best all-weather precision bomber in the world in the joint strike on Libyan terrorist-related targets in 1986. Navy A-6E Intruders and Air Force FB-111s penetrated the sophisticated Libyan air defense systems, which had been alerted by the high level of diplomatic tension and by rumors of impending attacks. Evading more than 100 guided missiles, the strike force flew at low levels in complete darkness and hit its target. A-6 aircraft were used extensively during Operation Desert Storm, providing precision bombing on a wide range of targets. The night and all-weather attack capabilities enabled the A-6 to neutralize anti-aircraft batteries and attack well-protected tactical targets with minimum casualties. The precision munitions used by the A-6 provided exact targeting of targets in a complex environment.

Updated screen shoot of A-6A. About to add pilot & copilot seats, landing gear, glass for cockpit and attach rudders, etc...

Once this is done a beta will be released. Followed by the following models in a full A-6 Pack;

A-6A Production attack plane first delivered to the US Navy in February 1963; 482 built

EA-6A Electronic countermeasures and intelligence gathering platform based on the A-6A airframe; 6 converted (3 YA-6A, 3 A-6A) and 21 built

A-6B A-6A airframes modified to carry the AGM-78 Standard ARM (anti-radiation missile) in place of the AGM-12 Bullpup; 19 converted

A-6C A-6A airframes modified with improved night-attack capability by the addition of FLIR (forward-looking infrared) and low-light TV equipment in a turret under the fuselage; 12 converted

KA-6D Originally ordered as a new production model but instead former A-6A airframes modified for use as in-flight refuelling aircraft equipped with a hose and drogue unit in the rear fuselage and TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) instrumentation, also retained day attack capability and could be operated as an air/sea rescue control platform; 78 converted

A-6E Advanced new-build attack bomber with an improved multi-mode nav/attack radar, and an automated attack and weapons-delivery system; about 120 built and 240 A-6As converted

A-6E/TRAM Target Recognition Attack, Multisensor (TRAM) upgrade applied to the A-6E fleet that saw the installation of a chin turret containing a FLIR and laser-designator, CAINS (carrier airborne inertial navigation system), an automated carrier-landing system, and the ability to carry precision guided bombs

A-6E/SWIP A-6E upgrade introducing the ability to carry stand-off precision attack weapons such as Maverick, Harpoon, SLAM, and HARM; later upgrades added a HUD for the pilot, revised wing fillets, and additional fuel

Coming along nicely- I'd like to help you out with beta testing if you don't mind. I'm worthless in the actual modding department, but I can play the hell out of a new addon.

How is it coming along?

Are you going to make it be able to carpetbomb more like dkm's ov-10 bronco?

Hope you have some great hires textures for it too

Looking forward to it

At the moment I'm trying to figure-out how to get a Co-pilot targeting sight-turret to work with IR and Laser-dis. (not as weapon, but as item.).

I've get 3-4 A-6A's done in the config file, and just figuring out a few things before beta released.

What seems to be the problem when you put it in to ofp, what kind of error do you get ?

Im not an ofp editing guru but i'll try to help as good as i can.

I have learned that the best is to use another planes cpp and just modify it to suit your needs

Let me know how the progress goes

good luck
