Mp problems

Recommended Posts

I used to play MP games all the time with no problem at all, now when I try to enter an MP game, my PC freezes at the screen "The countdown Begins", ctrl+alt+delete won't even work here, I have to shut off the computer.

I have no idea what's causing this. Could it be a Windows problem? Since I have used Win2000 I can't play MP, but I could with Win98. I am on v1.85.

Any answers?

Thanks,

Tyler

did you empty your flashpoint.rpt logfile?

Open the file with notepad. When you see all error logs in there you can delete all data and save the empty file

that helped a lot of times on my pc wink.gif

Are you running Zone Alarm? If so, could it be prompting you to OK the port connection via OFP's EXE? Try ALT+TAB'ing to see.

Alt-Tab won't work with ZoneAlarm. It displays a system-modal dialog that is covered up by the Direct3D window, and system-modal windows don't allow you to change the focus.

The best way to deal with this if you have ZoneAlarm is to run OFP once with the following switches:

-window -x=800 -y=600

to keep it from taking over the entire screen (assuming your system is capable of more than 800x600). This should keep the ZoneAlarm dialog visible when it pops up in the lower-right corner. Configure it properly, and ask it to remember the settings.

You're done, and don't need those command-line switches anymore...

I've had occasions where ALT+TAB worked and where it didn't with ZA and OFP. Go figure.

Yes.

Would disabling it work?

How exactly do I do that?

Thanks so far.

You could do that just to try a quick test. Or, better, pay attention to Mister Frag's suggestion above to run OFP windowed for this test.

Disabling ZoneAlarm should work, but why do that? The whole point of having a firewall is to enjoy the benefit of controlling exactly what information flows in and out of your system.

To configure ZoneAlarm for OFP, modify the shortcut for OFP/Resistance that is on your desktop by right-clicking on it, and adding the -window -x=800 -y=600 switches after any other switches such as -nosplash. If you have no existing switches, add them to the end AFTER the closing quote that marks the end of the file name.

Then, run OFP and try to both start a network game by creating a server, and try joining one as well. ZoneAlarm will pop up a dialog in the lower right corner of the screen, and you should now be able to click on the dialog and make the appropriate choices. Make sure you tell ZoneAlarm to remember those choices.

Once OFP runs without causing any further ZoneAlarm dialogs, remove the newly added switches from the OFP/Resistance desktop shortcut.

Also, be aware that applying a patch or upgrade to the OFP executable changes the signature, which will cause ZoneAlarm to re-prompt you the next time OFP tries to access the network.

Well, I've always had a problem with the target box, I tried the 'nosplash' command ages ago, and now with this all I get is the same error message:

The name: "blah blah blah" Specified in the target box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct.

Edit: Never mind, I got it working, thanks. wink.gif

BTW, I installed my new graphics card today, a GeForce 2 MX400. The graphics on OFP are excellent now. This is a huge difference campared to my old VooDoo 3, and all it took was 10 minutes, let the good times roll. biggrin.gif

Got what working? NoSplash, MP or both? If MP, was the problem caused by ZA's prompting?

No splash, and the Small screen.

I'll give the MP a shot tomorrow after class.

Thanks for caring. biggrin.gif

Well, I shut down Zone Alarm and I tried three times to connect to MP, no sucess. On the plus side, my PC no longer freezes up.

I am still getting stuck at the 'wait for server' screen. sad.gif
