Arctic Circle map / project horde

project horde is the working title of a 40x40km map generated from a 100x100km chunk of actual Norwegian fjords and mountains from the west coast. Elevation data downloaded from Norwegian government and imported to TB. Altitude is also scaled to 40%. This to increase playability as infantry compared to having a real size 40km map which would pretty much fit half a fjord and most of it would be near vertical.

Expect mostly wilderness and mountains. Vast forests, tundra, snow and lots of sea.

Here are older videos showing a small portion of the map with areas in various levels of completion.

1.6 screens (outdated)

http://imgur.com/a/whvYj   <- previous screens.

Some stats: currently 4 million pine trees. Estimated 12 million when all pine forests are done.

3500 manually placed objects. (houses, pavements, lightpoles etc..)

Currently the main focus is zoning up pine forests which constitute the most of the trees in the mountainous regions. Leaf trees will only grow from 0-200m.

Snow starts at around 400m altitude in the main parts of the map and go as low as around 50m at the morthernmost.

Northern 1/4 of the map will have snow.

Enough progress has been made that it is time to show the community some of what we are working on. I will update this post as soon as we have perfected a 1.6 compatible config and created build #0.08

Which one? there are quite a few! (valleys that is.. not a single river for obvious reasons)

I will upload another video showing 1.6 settings within the next couple of days!

Not at all happy with what the water looks like at the moment.... I'd like to get it to look more like this:

Very cool!

You can use the Splendid Camera to take screenshots too btw.  ESC -> Camera while in the editor.  It's usually either h or Backspace to clear the UI while in the Camera Mode.

Looks amazing, i love the setting!

Out of curiousity, are you making custom objects aswell, because i saw a clearing in the forest, which looked like it was meant to have a cable car track going through it, are you making something like that?

Thank you!

Custom objects are going to be there at some point but FAR ahead in the future.

The strips of clearing you are talking about is probably high voltage power lines... The pylons are just a bit hard to see without sky as background.. all 3 current towns have them and a vast network of them is in the works.

There will at some point be a few oil rigs, bridges, dams, cable cars and ski lifts as custom objects, as well as elements from the Festung Norwegen part of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Wall .

Those things will have to wait until the basic landscape and nature is playable however.

If I can attract somebody to the project who can help me convert and configure the objects from software I model in to a3, then it will happen faster. At the moment I have more than enough with building the basic map with nature..

Currently waiting for Tanoa files to be opened so we can add them to the map.

This looks beautiful man! I can't wait for a release. One of the things I've always wanted is a Scandinavian terrain with the fjords and endless ranges of spruces trees. Good luck with the project.

Thanks guys!

Here is the latest progress video.

Driving a jeep to visit two secret military locations.

Flying a jet along a nearly finished valley, river and almost completed alpine airfield.

Flying a heli in a small section of the main town Bergheim

https://youtu.be/SzhNl-Moylg

The derelict buildings from altis will be swapped out with tanoa objects as soon as our overlords at BI deem us worthy of using their assets.

Same goes for the empty lots in the large town when flying the heli.

Somebody requested this elsewhere so thought I'd post it here aswell.

This is a tiny version of the image that forms the basic satellite texture and layout of the map.

I have painted on the flight path and location from latest video. Blue dotted line thing.

The regios marked with snow will soon be covered in it.

You can see all the 2000+ stretches of road and stuff.

The town Bergheim is the main capital of the map and the only large urban area. You can see a third of it in the latest video. The map will be pretty much wilderness everywhere that isn't grey.

It is sort of based on the one at Haakonsvern in Bergen. Except totally different location. There won't be a naval base in the same place as real location as it didn't work out size wise. There will be one on one of the larger islands to the south though.

Nice. Yeah, haakonsvern does have an interior "hangar" for repair of the ships. Olavsvern only has one sub pen, just like urs. Anyways, map is looking fantastic! I like the idea of a larger navy base, as i just love naval stuff in A3 :D

Just need some good quality ships now ;)

Yeah I have been playing around with the Swedish mod that has some boats. Had the most fun with the specops boat from RHS:US though. I'd really love to have a static carrier on the map. I plan to add a few oil rigs later.
