Hi all , a new / return-ee here , I currently  make 3d models for crysis 1 on a private hobby basis , mainly ships , vehicles etc , i am wondering if there is any appetite for the following project , which i have made,  to come over to the ARMA 3 engine  over the coming months ??, there is more to this project , but for now i will show below , feedback is appreciated , if no interest then i will keep it on the crysis 1 - cryengine via the sandbox 2 editor , enjoy the visuals , thanks

The fastest way to build interest would probably be to show them already imported into Arma 3 (screenshots, video)...

Hello there

Anything like this would be very appealing to many of us.

But it all depends on how well implemented it is.

I look forward to watching this develop!

Alien invasion is a hugely untapped scenario for Arma especially given A3's near-future setting, either the initial outright warfare or post-invasion survival. Good luck with it.

does anyone see a problem animating the tripods legs to walk in arma 3 ?

aside from that the tripods was a bbc tv series in the 90's based on 3 books by john christopher - recently the author died (  -  books 1 and 2 made series 1 and 2 , but book 3 / series 3 was never made by the bbc , the premise of the tripods story is that aliens invaded over the earth , and sent earth back to a middle ages time period with no technology ! the aliens meanwhile wanted to terraform the earth to an alien atmosphere

obviously the earths military was engaged at invasion point and crushed , so what i would like to see in the arma 3 game engine is the ability to fight the tripod war machine , in a fun way , single player mission creation etc , setting up fun scenario battles etc , its not too over ambitious in this respect )

i forgot to show the following gallery it requires a little explaining to make sense -

when i made the tripods for crysis 1 , in game the baddies are north koreans and the alien seph - i actually made 4 tripod 3d model versions , tripod with no weapons ,tripod with lasers , and 2 other versions, with missiles and gatling guns and a kind of sci fi howitzer version , the last two were envisaged as being human piloted tripods !

the premise being that the alien seph had the lasers , but the north koreans who were to be the stooges of the alien seph and used by them as cannon fodder , had access to the tripod transports , but not the laser gun technology , so the human north koreans fitted out their 2 tripod versions with , rockets / missiles , and gatling gun / howitzers -  therefore the humans needed to be able to board the tripod , and be able to pilot / drive them , hence i modelled the interior of these tripods for human habitation as shown , hence the gallery below , showing the seating arrangements etc

it should be noted that tripods can scoop up humans from the battlefield via the grab pincer arm , and feed then into the bottom of the tripod head , into an isolation cube prison compartment for interrogation etc - i modelled that in too )

in arma3 tripods will obviously be an aggressive alien invading force , but there is the option for say the allied human military force to perhaps , engage a tripod , disable it , and reverse engineer it with human weaponry , and pilotability , to then use back against the aliens to help turn the tide of the war ?

As far as I'm aware you have 2 options. Armoured class with config driven animations, or a "character" with rtms. The tank class won't look as appealing, but offers crew and more weapon flexibility. The "character" would look the part, with less options weapon-wise and obviously, no crew. It would have the heavier workload too in terms of configs and keyframing.

I don't think A3 has global mass. As in, a property that governs environment interaction based on mass rather than class.

So a man class unit could still be halted by a big shrub, even if it weighs a million tonnes. Which although not a game breaker, can spoil the illusion. Perhaps someone can confirm this. Armoured vehicles wouldn't be subject to this of course.

The lost dragons mod team are trying to hybridise these two class types. It's still experimental. So I'm sure they have a lot to work around. But keep an eye on it.

It seems we are not the only ones bitten with robot bug.. ;D Definitely go for it if you want to!

Macser already listed the two basic ways to do it, and as he said we're working on a hybrid walking vehicle that is build from man class legs and tank class body and so far it has proven to take the necessary features from both class types.

There are still many things unproven so if you want to build a Man-Tank  horror, prepare for huge load of work and there is also the possibility that something goes wrong with the technique. Though so far everything has worked.

I actually took walk in our map and tried to get the walker to stop at terrain formations but the damn thing just ran up just about every hill/cliffside :D It did slow down from ~40km/h to ~20km/h speed so terrain should not be a problem for a large walking unit. There however are issues with collision as I don't think we have all proper collision geometries set up for the man legs as Im quite certain Man class has different method of calculating it than other vehicles.

TLDR: Based on what we've managed to stitch together what you intend should be possible.

Thankyou both for the technical info re walking Tripods its very exciting prospects , i am here for the long haul re 3d modeliing and modding , so hopefully we can all achieve some cool stuff in game engine together.

i certainly would consider working with others to get 3d models of all sorts fully in game arma 3 fully featured and working for mutual community fun )

My old little mod project may be of some assistance. I can give you my source code if you are interested.

I just made the legs on mine move a little back and forth, they are tanks actually.

So far I did not get around to fix them up properly, the AI is unable to move them as they turn too quick and I did not find the proper setting to reduce the turnrate yet.

I have plans to continue once I get bored of my planes and will stick to the concept of making it look like a real bad B movie.

I've flirted with this idea so many times, especially with a 'Battle:Chernarus" mod (from the Battle:LA movie). Where it would expand into a 'World Invasion' mod with other warring species from films such as Cowboys & Aliens, ID4, War of the Worlds and Battleship. Alas, just the scope of such a project and my lack of technical knowledge on this held me back. Still..if I could be persuaded to make a serious effort.

I thought of a game mode where you have the Tripods from War of the Worlds or the Cloverfield monster attacking the major towns/cities and your job is to slow them down and the more damage you do the more 'prestige' (currency) you earn to invest in better weapons and kit. The Tripods have shields which deplete with each hit so the point is to try to and maximise damage to slow their advance and rescue/escort civilians and refugees to safety until the big guns are available.

I think the ArmA series is perfect and so under utilised for this sort of thing. Especially if you consider the Battle:LA aliens who in the near future setting of the game would actually make sense and offer an enemy that's loosely comparable. Imagine the aliens using water as an energy source with fresh water (inland) being very valuable and what tactical and strategic implications that would have in a game where you usually just 'conquer the island' by capturing population centres.

I'm waffling but good to know someone else is on a similar wavelength in that regards.
