Hostage situation in Moscow

There is a hostage situation in Moskow. Tjetjin terrorists have taken around 700 people hostage in a theather. The 20 terrorist want the war to stop (tjitjin war - yeah i know i spelled the word wrong -). Alfa teams have been dispatched.

Oh i hope this would end without any bloodshed.

edit: The police forces have enterd the building, damn, this is not good. Innocents are going to get hurt here

Chechen separatists contacted the BBC to say the hostage-takers had planted explosives in the theatre and were led by a nephew of Chechen warlord Arbi Barayev.

They demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya, and said they were prepared to die for their cause.

They also reportedly said that if Russian security forces tried to attack, they would blow up the theatre.

The gunmen initially allowed members of the audience - at a Palace of Culture in a working-class area in the southwest of the city - to use mobile phones to tell people outside.

The audience and those people released said the attackers, who consisted of men wearing combat uniforms and women in veils, had explosives strapped to their bodies.

When will people learn. You simply can't take hostages anymore. It either ends up with the following:

1. Gunmen surrender - Arrested

2. Gunmen kill hostage to show force of will - Building gets stormed, gunmen killed.

3. Gunmen attempt to escape scene via some mode of transport. - Transport intercepted, gunmen killed.

Governments have wised up. The terror tactics of 'yesteryear' simply don't work anymore.

Holy s*** this is a very bad situation. I just hope no one gets killed (besides terrorists) and nothing bad happens. This reminds me of the swat3 mission in the theatre, just on a huge scale, with 100s of terrorists.

I hate to be the pessimist but I will. The following comments are directed in way of objective intellectual discussion-I'm not badgering anyone.

First off USMC Sniper. I must bring to your attention that we as humans carry a large responsibilty to take care of the rest of the world. Our intelligence and cognitive thinking enables us to feel, think and do. So how is it you feel that death is justified? Since when did this biased opinion of "Thou Shalt not kill" become a "depends" ordeal? We know that terrorist are bad yes? So we should kill them right? What about some child molester amongst the crowd that we end up saving?

Don't get me wrong I'm for things like capital punishment-I just find it funny that the good get to kill the bad. So what "Though Shalt not commit adultry" changes when your spouse leaves the country or wife is in a coma?

Aces-Kevin: Yes these people are beggin for attention. Simple solution by any typical human is to stop their actions once it has started. Handing them a serious sentnce in a Colorado's Super Hotel. Great...someone else is going to do it again anyway.

Is the U.S. public so naive that they just automaticall asume these people are targetting folks for no reason? IN isolated cases such as that DC traffic lightener he is in some sense targetting those for absolute no reason. But its all on the same boat. We as a world are ignoring serious problems in our society. Violence has risen drastically{even though violent crimes are down in some states}. Terrorist for the mostr part I think are not trying to get throuhg to the worlds govornment but more to the people.

I'm for getting rid of them...But the U.S. people must ask thier govornment what exactly they did to make thses people so damn mad. Someone got screwed somewhere and they are not happy. Its a clear sign of neglect and hopelessness.

Ask yourslef why the worlds worst epidemic right is hunger and yet we hvae no shortage of food. Its cause the power in the world is not divided up equally.

So while we read propanga from our newspapers adn newspapers from around the globe-our Brass think up more malicious ways to screw over the weak and profit. We only think we know whats going on.

Ever researched or talked to Vets fromt he Gulf War who had Gulf War Syndrome? Clear proof your govornment doesn't give a shit about you.

War is just an extention of politics where soldiers end up getting their hands dirty for stuff that if they if they knew what it was they would prolly never have joined. {Main reason why I left the military}.

Thats not what I ment. I did not mean that I want the terrorists to die, I just said that I hope it comes out peacefully to the hostages, and that most of the terrorists deaths will be inevitable.   The terrorists will most likely either get shot by Spetznaz or OMON or whatever, or detonate themselves. But still though they deserve to be punished if they surrender, maybe not by death (I doubt), but it is just being an asshole if you take many people hostage, be it 10 or 1000.

In situations like that, the authorities should ban ALL media from the area.

It's in the public's best interest and safety, and that should always trump free speech. People's lives are at stake here, for crying out loud.

alpha teams? do they have operational detachments alpha in russia? never mind...

right now somebody should be looking hard into the blueprints of the building. theaters always have lots of spaces below the ground. maybe there are tactical strongpoints to be manned.

somebody should also immediately get on the roof or high windows of the shop to get visuals down into the crowd without being noticed. or do they have tv-crews in there already?

what about a multiple flashbang entry, like from 3 secured sides simultaneously? would probably be uncalculable right now.

I'm all tense to see how this ends.

Thats why I said "That's what he gets". You can't be a cop and complain about getting shot. I give 'em heart-they suck it up just soldiers and do their job, which i was in his position i would rather have a gun than 8" mic. But i think its just simple curiosity that gives birth to parasites like reporters. They can be used for good things but lets be honest, for the most they just piss people off.

Thats just stupid. Think about it! The press is there to report and make sure what is taking place ends up in the minds of people and history. What if there were no journalists present in Dachau - Bergen Belsen or Sachsenhausen. What if there were no reporters present in Spain during the civil war. What if there were no reporters present in Praha in 68, or in Chile when Pinochet seized the power. What if there were no reporters present when the USSR invaded Afghanistan or when the studens were shot down on Tianamen Square. What would you know about anything at all?

I would rather say we desperatly need the media when armed conflicts take place. How would you be able to judge between right or wrong when conflicts appear. Do you really trust your government that much? Do you like being brainwashed by your government? I suppose not - thats what media are here for. And they should be present in armed conflicts as in every areas of interest to any of us!

I'm not at all concerned about the safety of the reporters, I'm concerned about the safety of the hostages and police.

You can bet that the hostage takers have people on the outside, and those will be monitoring the news. If some idiot reporter discusses the preparations and tactics of the authorities, he or she will be jeopardizing countless lives.
