HeroesandvillainsOS 1504 Posted February 2, 2016 Will the 2D editor still be available after 1.56 comes out? I'd assume so, just want to make sure. I love the idea of being able to use both on a mission for fine tuning, but I'd still like to primarily be on the 2D editor because the missions I make are module based. And if it will be available, will it be a 'one or the other' type thing or could one mission feasibily be made with both?

HeroesandvillainsOS 1504 Posted February 2, 2016 That freaking sucks. Thanks for the link. Sounds like they're still trying to decide whether to keep it in any form. Advanced modders seem to not even be able to figure out to sync stuff yet. Yikes. The chances of me (not a modder or mission maker, really) being able to succeed with this or understand it quickly sounds slim. Ugh. Very disappointed. I suspect you'll be surprised-I can only speak from personal experience but I found it all pretty easy to figure out (could do with a keyboard shortcut for sync though), even without checking any of the tutorials. You've got a 2D view in the 3D editor as well.
HeroesandvillainsOS 1504 Posted February 2, 2016 I just hope I can find a tutorial. Does anyone have one handy? I'll check YouTube so no biggie if anyone doesn't. Figured I'd ask. Thanks everyone.

There's a series of tutorials built into the editor itself, I've not seen any but I'm sure somebody will put some good ones on youtube.
devilslayersbane 28 Posted February 5, 2016 Yeah, mate. If you're not on dev branch, get on it and try out the 3d editor. It makes the whole process 20 times easier.

It makes the whole process 20 times easier. All of the missions I make rely on modules, quick syncing and previewing over and over and over.I'm sure it's great for people that need to "see" what they are doing. I do not. I need to see the map from a top down view and strategically place my modules. I need to sync and group and lay down markers. I do not need 3D. All I want is for the 2D view to function exactly that same as the current 2D editor.
chortles 263 Posted February 6, 2016 All I want is for the 2D view to function exactly that same as the current 2D editor. It basically changes camera mode to a 'static' 2D top-down map view with icons and the 3DEN GUI.
Mozkelby 39 Posted February 16, 2016 I do believe you can still use the 2D editor after the Update. In one of their Dev Diary videos, you can see that upon entering the 'Editor' tab, you may click on an island and select whether you want to launch it with the 2D editor or the 3D editor. nodunit 397 Posted February 17, 2016 2D option will be going yes because it will be redundant by that point, since you can go to top down (essentially the same) in 3D.
Maxzy 12 Posted February 17, 2016 HeroesandvillainsOS, I will clarify things for ya =). 2D editor will be no more after the update. BUT! And it's a round and nice but - in 3D editor there is an option to switch the view to 2D by just pressing an "M" key. You press it and you see everything as it was before in the glorious 2D-times =)). Only the interface is slightly different, but I think you'll get used to it very quikly cause it's good. Except it seems they have removed the option to "Merge" missions!!, thats like removing layers from Photoshop and takes away the ability to build up small but complex missions. Its great too finally get a 3D editor, but when i think about it not at the expense of the 2D one.

I reached my quota for likes today but I like this post. :) Yeah, as the weeks have passed it has occurred to me that I'm spending more time "previewing" my missions due to object placement (and especially base building. WTF bargates? Why don't you go where I tell you to go? :) ). So I'm more excited for going 3D than I have previously thought. A lot of time wasting clicking preview just to make sure items are exactly where I want them to be. I just hope the 2D view is still simple for syncing, module plopping, marker and trigger placing and other things that are currently really fast and easy to do. But I'm ready. My bases are the absolute worst.

I create "sound templates" for different enviornments...i.e. African sounds for African maps, etc. I can then merge those ambient sounds super quick into other missions on that map. So now I'm gonna have to copy and paste the whole thing over I guess?

katipo66 94 Posted February 17, 2016 Did the layers capability not act as an adequate substitute? Does it in your opinion? when i first tried Eden it had no Layers function, so i havent tried it yet... is there the ability to turn layers on/off or visible/non-visible? merge is very a powerful feature, it would be a real shame to lose that capability. chortles 263 Posted February 18, 2016 Re: the merge talk, from Bohemia's ten-things-about-Eden article: "If you are familiar with Photoshop, you probably already have a pretty good idea of how layers and the entity list in the Eden Editor work. In short, you now have a clear overview of all the entities placed in your scenario, and you can define custom and nested collections of entities to manipulate them as a set." Not the 2D view here, but I encourage you to hop onto the release candidate and give it a go to find if Eden's entities/layers implementation is well-suited in your opinion.

In my opinion at a quick glance its not even close to what im able to achieve with merge. For example a mission like below is built from 5 separate (sub) missions, these all get merged onto an empty map to create the final mission, theres always constant fine tuning which can be easily done on any of the separate missions and then simply clear the board on the main mission and re-merge all 5 again, this is a truer form of layers on par with Photoshop and provides the ability for complexity which is a lot harder when dealing with all entities displayed on a map at the same time. Dont get me wrong, the new editor is awesome, i love it even... but ive clocked up a few thousand hours on this game and guaranteed 99% of it has been in the editor, i understand no gives a shit about merge but it cuts deep for me man. EDIT: Ok great, after playing around a bit more ive figured it out, i didnt realize you can paste exact positions into other missions, works great.. sorry for the whinge but very happy now as its business as usual :)
virtualvikingx 19 Posted February 19, 2016 How do you paste with exact positions? Sent from my iPhone so pardon any autocorrect bollocks
Jona33 51 Posted February 19, 2016 Copy then Ctrl-Shift-V (Dead handy for placing a row of sandbags or something, especially when combined with the translation widget). Didn't realise that it works across multiple missions which is cool.
