I plan to buy a new computer soon but I have a dilemma about the CPU and the GPU I want to buy.

So it's either the combination of   i7-6700K 4.0 GHZ and the GTX 1060 6GB version or the

i5-6600k and GTX1070 ..  It's a budget question and I have to go with one of the alternatives.
Any ideas?

Have an i7. I'd go with the i5 /1070.

It's simple really. the i7 will give you minimal to no performance over the i5 in the vast majority of games arma included.

However the case is not the same with 1070 vs 1060. 1070 is around 40% faster so nearly twice the power. It will drive 1440p at 144hz not breaking a sweat. frankly the question is what resolution you gaming at.

1070 is overkill for regular 1080p gaming.

There is alot to answer here and very little information. Budget for one.

First thingd sell your old pc for around 300 euro. Again assuming you are in Europe. Can't be specific.

I can say go Intel. Again. No budget so can't be specific .

Get a gtx 1060 minimum. Again can't be specific. But from a 280 it seems logical course.

Get an ssd. Crucial bx are a cheap but still decent option.

Ahhh see. Hmm. Me personally Nik I'd get the 1070. Reasons why. It's more powerful yet 1 3Rd the price of last years top tier card gtx titan.

prices of monitor's will only come down as push for 4k comes faster more commercial ( PlayStation pro). You are playing 1080p now. But that may not be the case for too long. I game on arma 27 inch 1440p.I can now mever go back 1080p. Honestly 1440p is the sweet spot right now in gaming. And should you see a monitor for cheap you won't pester yourself will my pc run it. hell that said so will 1060 :D.

My point being the i7 regardless once it's a gaming rig the extra cost just cannot be justified. Hell i5 /gtx 1060 and the change spent on a hooker.

I play occasionally, and work a lot with the computer. If you work a lot with Photoshop (ps is mostly cpu and ram), you're a bit better off with the 6700k.  Also  you do video edit or 3d render, the i7 is an advantage. I've noticed that in my render times. Some 3d packages and video editors do use the GPU, but with its limitations. In CPU mode you usually can access all the features. You would also benefit from the higher multitasking but if you are not a heavy multitasker, run few things at a time or mainly one app, then is almost the same. If i were only to play, and not high budget, yes, I would go 6600k and maybe just the 1060, even... (because am very used to play in 1080p or less...)

Exacly as @teabaggingpeople says. Vudget... how much money you want to spend?
For GPU - dont get R280. I have R9 270oc from gigabyte and its maybe enough but you could see its on its edge of possibilities. Aim much higher with GPU, you dont need to buy all at once.
R9 380 is better, and if you wont need this asap, collect your money and get it from MSI.
But arma is (for now) CPU intensive, specially in terms of #Ghz per core. Tahe MINIMAL 3,5Ghz i5 - i have it and fro 23-50FPS you can enjoy battles (large battles). I didnt tested AMD cpu's but heard they work pretty wel in armas.
I will buy new PC in december propably, and will use my friend scheme:

R9 480 Gaming X (4gb, from MSI)
i7 6700K 4Ghz (x4, good for overclocking)
And ddr4 ram 2300Mhz

At friend pc's arma is handling at stable 40-50FPS, but he use frame limiter, so screen is not so "tearing", but other games runs at stable 60 FPS at ultra settings.

So in case of CPU you can experiment with AMD, but best - find someone who have one, ask him how's arma 3 handle it.

If you are not in a hurry, I will suggest to wait a bit until next year to get a "Kaby Lake" i5-7600K or i7-7700K.

Not only for the small performances jump, but also for the overall update of a Z 270 based platform.

 

Here and now, a i5-6600k and GTX1070 based rig is a good gaming option.

That's a good budget. you'd get an i7 and 1070 in there. You must have something else in the budget?

I think I will go with i7 6700k and Asus 1070 8GB.. This an upgrade for the future so I want to avoid any upgrades for the upcoming years.

Also I'm not upgrading because of Arma but it would be good if I can see any benefits for this game.

3 monitors @ 1080p = 3x 1920x1080 = 1920x3240

In terms of resolution, that's about halfway between 1440p & 4k.

Here are benchmarks from Hardware Unboxed's rig (i7-6700k @ 4.5 GHz & 16 GB DDR4-3000):

So given that a GTX1080 provides 80 fps @ 1440p (2560x1440) and 40 fps @ 4K (3840x2160), I think it's fair to say that a GTX1080 would provide about 60 fps @ 1920x3240.

Of course, you'd also need an equally fast CPU + RAM.

Overall, I'd estimate that'd cost $1160 ($600 for a GTX1080, $330 for a 6700k, $150 for mid-range Z170 mobo & $80 for 16GB DDR4-300).

If it helps justify it, a PC of that calibre could prolly run any game, even the latest (Fallout 4, The Division, The Witcher 3, BF1, Far Cry Primal) in 3 x 1080 @ 60+ fps.

despite being vanished from the forum i'm still playing super Arma3 on my faithfull i52500k, 8gb RAM, gtx 760!

 

Probably i want to upgrade my system soon - and one of my priorities is obviously Arma3!

 

I would like to go for i5 6600k\6700k + 16GB RAM

 

And here the first question - reading some comments, it seems worth to invest on fast speed RAM (3Ghz?) - are those components affidable enough?

 

Second question: i mostly play on 1080p, and i really dont think i'll be changing to any higher resolution soon - is a good Nvidia 1060 6GB a good investment for the purpose?

 

Or also for Arma3 the difference between 1060\1070 is remarkable?

so get the 6600k and save yourself €100

P8H67 only supports CPUs with a LGA1155 socket, e.g. 4+ year old CPUs.

That leaves you with 2 options:

1. keep your P8H67 but run the fastest LGA1155 i5 (i3570k) & fastest old RAM (DDR3-2400) = €150 + €90 = €240

2. replace your P8H67 with a cheap Z170 mobo (MSI Z170-A PRO), latest i5 (6600k) & latest RAM (DDR4-300) = €75 + €220 + €85 = €380

* all RAM prices are for 16GB (2x8GB)

Beware that LGA1155 CPUs are no longer sold new, so you'll have to buy one second-hand (cheaper but riskier).

Yep, actually i got a special deal with a little computer shop near to my home (Italy-Florence) so i can give them back Processor\RAM\MB\VideoCard for a good discount on a new machine that probably will be

 

i5-6600K (with a cooler ready for OC)

16GB ddr4 2666Mhz or 3000Mhz

Gygabyte GTX1060 6GB

Reusing my SSDs

in case anyone is intrested in ArmA preformace on ultrabooks:

i've tried it on the Dell XPS13 i5-7200U (intel 620 iGPU), PCIe SSD.
​every setting on low or standard, no AA, 1080x1920, 1000m VD
im getting ~24fps in the editor and in low AI pupulated simple misions in the Tanoa cities ~20fps.
​just for the science, i've tried 3200x1800 and its about ~4fps :(

 

so its fine for editing and testing.

I want to thank everyone for your suggestion. This saturday (thanks to various discounts etc) i built up the new PC and now Arma 3 runs really smooth! I'm loving it even more.
