Sneakson 1 Posted July 28, 2013 (edited) intel core i5 2320 cpu @ 3.00 ghzgefore 530 6g ram motherboard no idea Are my current specs, and i really would like to upgrade to be able to play on max settings and stream. Would it be worth replacing parts if so please link what you would recommend, or would it be worth to just buy a new PC. It's a decent CPU, really weak graphics card. I dunno what it takes to stream really but if you wanna max out and stream it sounds like you'll be needing pretty much the best in which case buying a new computer would be best. You can probably sell at least your CPU for something unless you have use for it. Anyways for an all new computer the cost should come to about $1500/£1000 in total. Only motherboard, cpu and gpu will cost about $1000. Some really nicer things, a monitor and quality mouse and keyboard included and it should come to about $2400 tops. Something more fully fledged including monitor and everything is about $3000 and for about $4000-5000 you’ll have the best with all of that extra money just spent on less and less cost efficient graphics cards really. You may be able to cut down to $150 by buying a slightly weaker graphics card which may have little impact but until we see a lot of benchmarking of the final game it’s hard to tell. Aaanyways no need to worry about the bigger numbers too much. Someone else may be able to recommend some cheaper parts. I don’t know just how much you can cut back on GPU but probably not a lot more than $150 and then you may be able to save some tens of bucks with the miscellaneous components especially if you already have some useable things for example using your old RAM should save you about $100 but you may also want to spend some extra on a solid power supply so I would still recommend spending about $1500… at least, considering your demands. Chassis: Corsair 300R for a basic example but google for anything you want. Cheap below $100 or expensive around $200. Motherboard: ASUS Z87-A or MSI Z87-G45 are to basic, solid examples about just over $150. CPU: Intel Core i5-4670k, about $230. GPU: GTX 760, 770, 760 SLI, 770 SLI, 780 SLI, Titan SLI in that order depending on how much dough you want to burn. Memory: 4 or 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz recommended for example Corsair Vengeance or Kingston memories. About $100 for 8GB so it’s dirt cheap. Power supply: Corsair CX500M at least. About 500-600W is OK without SLI, 700+ recommended with SLI. A somewhat better PSU is strongly recommended if you’re not going for a budget squeeze. 80+ Bronze rating is awesome but I haven’t really looked into which ones are the best in that price range as mine is going to be premium grade. Less than $100 at least, $200 at most. HDD: Western Digital Blue 500GB-1TB or Green 2TB depending on need. Less than $100. SSD: Samsung 840 250GB (64GB minimum for OS, 128 OK, 250 much better), about $200 Optical drive: you’ve probably got one already. And naturally you’ll need Windows which really has a variable cost depending on if you’ve already got it, or if you’re a student and such. You may be able to do somewhat cheaper with budget parts and especially used non-budget parts but asking to max this game is asking lots. I'm hoping to make a better and complete buyers guide once the game is out and we can get an official benchmark that lots of people with all sorts of specs can run and we can test for example how low you can go on GPU with a decent CPU without big fps loss. GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670CPU: Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E7600 @ 3.06GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.1GHz RAM: 4GB OS: Win7 64bit DirectX Version: 11 I have ArmA 3 already but i need to know what settings are best, if anyone could send me a PM which each settings and what i should set it at, that would be great, Thanks! Check my signature if it shows here. Try my exact settings use FRAPS to check framerate while playing through Showcase Infantry. If you want higher framerate then turn some things like texture, objects and terrain quality down but NOT shadows (!!!) and always check if your framerate really rises otherwise you may as well leave settings turned on. Turning visibility down would make the biggest gain. Your graphics card is pretty weak and your CPU isn’t much either really. If you’re playing in less than 1920x1080 it may work somewhat okay though. Some settings you may want to turn down: texture quality, objects quality, terrain quality, try shadows on high, very high or ultra because it sort of works in reverse (worse performance on low usually), particles quality, cloud quality, HDR, dynamic lights, depth of field (doesn't seem to give me better framerate so check your framerate as you try it), caustics off (underwater only I think?). There may be some additional tweaks here: http://day0.com.au/forum/arma/355-arma-3-beta-performance-tweaks-and-settings-guide Edited July 28, 2013 by Sneakson
Sorata 10 Posted July 28, 2013 Hi fellows I could really use some help. I bought a prebuilt Dell XPS 8300 from the Dell website a year or two ago I already want to upgrade the GPU to run ARMA III when it gets released. I want to run it at max if possible in 1920 x 1080. My current system is like this: Dell XPS 8300 Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit i7-2600 at 3.4 GHz (system specs show it currently running at 3.59) 12 GB Ram Two 500 GB HDD in RAID 1 GB Radeon HD 6770 GPU Dell factory PSU- specs unknown Motherboard Dell Product 0Y2MRG, Chipset Intel PCH H67 I know I need a new PSU for a new Graphics card but I am wondering what PSU to get (looking at Tiger direct and newegg) and would a VisionTek Radeon HD 7870 2GB PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card or VisionTek Radeon HD 7850 2GB PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card work in my system and run ARMA 3 at max settings? The reason I am torn between these cards is cause I can get them from Dell and make payments plus they aren't too expensive, just torn on which to get and if they would perform well. If neither is good I could get a VisionTek AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB PCIe Graphics Card from Dell but that's more than I wanna pay unless absolutely needed and maybe overkill? I'm not very familiar with those GPUs, so no comments about them. However, now that you have freedom to choose whatever PSU you want, there are two brands above others when we consider quality and price/performance ratio: XFX and Super Flower. They're superb. Get either one of those if you can. Other quality brands are eg. Seasonic, Enhance and Enermax.

Much better price/perfomance ratio for gaming.) ASRock Z77 Pro 3 -> ASRock Z77 Extreme4 (Extreme4 has much better power input for CPU, Pro's have a slight chance to burn your CPU) Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 - 2 gb -> Gigabyte Nvidia Geforce GTX 760 2 GB or MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 760 2 GB (They have much, much better and really silent aftermarket coolers, also slightly factory overclocked) Buy decent aftermarket CPU cooler with the saved money, and overclock the CPU (complete guide for even oveclocking newbies here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/complete-overclocking-guide-sandy-bridge-ivy-bridge-asrock-edition). You could also buy OC service but I'd recommend doing it yourself, if possible. :)

Leon86 13 Posted July 28, 2013 I'd recommend getting a 4670K and z87 instead of 3570K als for the psu, there's probably not that much required, ~100W cpu, 250W gpu, ~50 rest, all pretty safe estimates, 400 or more W corsair, xfx or seasonic psu should be fine. XFX pro 550W seems to be a good deal.
Katana1000 12 Posted July 29, 2013 Hi, just bought Arma 3 Beta today on Steam, have a pretty good system, I7-E 3960X @ 4.6 GHz, 16GB ram SSD's, Win 7 64 bit, Vid card is currently an Nvidea GTX 680 2GB driving a Dell U3011 LCD @ 2560 x 1600, would a GTX 780 3 GB be a worthwhile upgrade? (I have no intention of buying the Titan) I had planned to skip this gen of card and see what Nvidea came up with in 2014 as the only other main sims I use are FSX, RoF and DCS and none of them will really benefit from an upgrade to a 780 ... I guess what I'm asking is, is Arma 3 CPU or GPU biased? Thanks.

Sneakson 1 Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) Hi, just bought Arma 3 Beta today on Steam, have a pretty good system, I7-E 3960X @ 4.6 GHz, 16GB ram SSD's, Win 7 64 bit, Vid card is currently an Nvidea GTX 680 2GB driving a Dell U3011 LCD @ 2560 x 1600, would a GTX 780 3 GB be a worthwhile upgrade? (I have no intention of buying the Titan) I had planned to skip this gen of card and see what Nvidea came up with in 2014 as the only other main sims I use are FSX, RoF and DCS and none of them will really benefit from an upgrade to a 780 ... I guess what I'm asking is, is Arma 3 CPU or GPU biased? Thanks. Solid rig! ARMA is CPU mostly. 680 = 770 and 780 is 20% better than 770 however I don't know how the extra gig of graphics memory would work in such a high resolution really. It might make the improvement more worthwhile. Still a 780 is pretty darn expensive right now, like £500 something right? A 780 may be worth it if you have to buy something new anyways and have that extra money that gets you the 780 instead of the 770 or 760 however you’ve already got something on par with the 770 and unless you can sell your old card for a lot of money then I’d say it is absolutely positively not worth it. Even if you get like 30% or 50% or 100% better that’s at a cost of £500 whereas someone who has to buy one of these cards get the 770 for an additional £150 over the 760 or the 780 for £300 over the 760 or whatever the prices are if you know what I mean. Unless you have some sort of severe issue that you’re sure to be related to the extra gig of graphics memory then I’d say you should already be running the game okay, right? Edit: Oh shit, just realized my currency conversion is off by one digit! Not anymore! ---------- Post added at 20:39 ---------- Previous post was at 20:37 ---------- Hey guys, i've got above the recommended setting for Arma3 but i get only 15 - 15 fps, and down to 10ish fps while in an area with lots of buildings, Any help ? bangtail 0 Posted July 29, 2013 Hi, just bought Arma 3 Beta today on Steam, have a pretty good system, I7-E 3960X @ 4.6 GHz, 16GB ram SSD's, Win 7 64 bit, Vid card is currently an Nvidea GTX 680 2GB driving a Dell U3011 LCD @ 2560 x 1600, would a GTX 780 3 GB be a worthwhile upgrade? (I have no intention of buying the Titan) I had planned to skip this gen of card and see what Nvidea came up with in 2014 as the only other main sims I use are FSX, RoF and DCS and none of them will really benefit from an upgrade to a 780 ... I guess what I'm asking is, is Arma 3 CPU or GPU biased? Thanks. No single GPU is generally enough to drive a 1600P monitor (at max settings at any rate and especially not where A3 is concerned) - if anything, get another 680. Sneakson 1 Posted July 29, 2013 No single GPU is generally enough to drive a 1600P monitor (at max settings at any rate and especially not where A3 is concerned) - if anything, get another 680. That's an idea! SLI is really worth it if your mobo supports it and you've got enough watts. A strong high-quality PSU only costs about £50 more than a weak low-quality one and a 680 new costs £290 where I live and assuming the 680 is similar to the 770 two 770s are 40% better than one Titan. So for £290 you’ve got 40% more manliness than a £800 card will deliver. If you haven't got enough wattage then a quality power supply unit pushes it up to £390 minus what you can sell your old one for pretty much. However two 680s still only have 2GB graphics memory if that is an issue. 2+2 = 2.
Cpl Grimson 10 Posted July 29, 2013 I have 10GB of DDR3 Ram, in the Showcases i get about 40 - 50 FPS, could it just me multiplayer on Wasteland making it difficult ? i'm thinking so.

Hi, I've only had a quick look at the Beta and like what I see so far, it does seem to run fine already (not tried multiplayer yet) SLI with another GTX 680 2GB is an idea I may try, did SLI 2 x GTX 570 1.3 GB's on my last build and FSX did not like it, if anything it performed worse but SLI can be turned off in that instance ... I'm good to go motherboard wise with an Asus Rampage Extreme IV and Corsair HX1000, will take a look at what other games I have that may or may not support SLI and then decide to get one more GTX 680 2GB or hold out until next year for a GTX 880 that I imagine would come with 4GB vram, 2 x 680 2GB in SLI wont give me 4GB usable the way it works as I understand? and a larger amount of usable Vram would be fine at my resolution I guess, though everything does seem to work fine just now. Thanks for the idea's.

The lowest available amount of VRAM always counts, sadly. I have no idea how much VRAM ARMA uses. I just realized "Memory usage" in GPU-Z is VRAM... and maybe in Afterburner too. I thought that was RAM... Anyways 2GB will hopefully be OK for 1920x1200 a while. In a couple of years we’ll probably see affordable 4K-monitors though and whenever you make that jump you’ll have to upgrade surely.
ric 1 Posted August 1, 2013 **DISCLAIMER** This is not NOT a AMD VS INTEL thread! When I first got into computers they were too expensive for me to buy so I was always getting peoples older machines and seeing how far i could take them which led me to build all of my own rigs which has provided me with many valuable lessons :) like when I learned about cheap PSU's.... I heard a POP smelled smoke and my shuttle MB and vid card were gone :(. Over the years I have been a AMD builder because they were the best bang for the buck..sadly they have lost ground to intel which prompted my first intel RIG (see sig) that being said they are not bad chips its just that INTEL has the lead right now. I Have seen a number of posts recently with people wanting to play ARMA3 but having dated rigs or on a tight budget prompted me to spec a couple of budget options for those in need. I try to build my rigs with a strong back end(MB,PSU) for future upgrades, I generally follow a rule of "one and done" which means I upgrade the vid,CPU,ram and get a couple more years out it after that the rig is 3-4 years old and any more investment brings diminishing returns (unless I bought all top shelf to begin with). the following budget choices can be upgraded later to nice rigs but for now should be able to play alot of games at medium settings, some older games on high. first is the Intel rig (at the bottom are the common components shared by both rigs) Intel Core i3-3220 ivy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core $130 this a dual core with hyper threading and i have read ALOT of good reviews about this chip ASrock is ASUS's buget brand but are still very good board's ASRock H77M LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $75 TOTAL=$600 now the AMD rig AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core $120 ASRock 970 PRO3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS $85 TOTAL= $600 Common components : G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 $43 SeaSonic S12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC $72 SAPPHIRE 100355L Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP $175 ($160 after rebate) Western Digital WD Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard $60 Thermaltake V3 Black Edition VL80001W2Z Black SECC / Plastic ATX Mid Tower ( well ventilated case) $42 ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - OEM $18 TOTAL=$410 for common components I always make the mistake of assuming someone has an OS they can use...if not add another $100 :(
Sneakson 1 Posted August 2, 2013 (edited) £400 is difficult. £500 is more like doable. Especially if they have Windows. £500 Amazon.com is easy: (yes, yes… British currency but American site because it’s easier #swag) Basic: (£256) £40 Corsair Carbide 200R Sub-£100 nice motherboard £36 Western Digital Blue 500GB HDD £30 4GB Corsair Vengeance memory £36 Corsair CX500M (some nice reviews but Amazon reviews shows unsettling DOA rate) £14 Optical drive Difficult to choose: (£200) £70 Intel Core i3-3220 £130 NVidia GTX 660 And £44 for shipping or just like whatever. Or £30 extra to a GTX 660 Ti. Now that’s a shiny build, I think. What I can tell very theoretically the i3-3220 and GTX 660 should be very even and work at 100% based on two benchmark in which the both played games with near same settings and with a strong counterpart to make sure the components in question were limiting. I would love to see someone test this. Soon 4th gen i3s should be available too. What do you think? I tried selecting big-name and somewhat anonymous parts that I don't think anyone could dislike unless they want something special. Unfortunately international prices suck. A Swedish ditto with the 660 Ti costs about £100 extra. And with Windows unless you’re a student it’s about £100 extra even more. The only way to save £100~ is using CPU-integrated graphics. Cheaper than this AMD or used is probably better. SteelSeries Raw Rubberized at £30 is amazing value. A Swedish store currently sells SteelSeries SteelKeys 7G at £50 which is dog damn nice! I’m considering buying one right effing now, damn! Cheap! A SteelSeries QcK+ is also the best mousepad. Really, SteelSeries are very solid. Finally audio and monitor… very expensive if nice. £1-200 for a 1920x1080 and £1-200 for audio. Oh man, all of that for about £800-1000 and you’re in the zone! When the game hits I’d really like to make a buyer’s guide at £500, £750, £1000, £1500 and £2000 as well as a guide to audio, monitors, mice, keyboards and such up. And especially we need an official benchmark suite to use. Edited August 2, 2013 by Sneakson

Yes, re-using parts saves you money but it's unnecessary to write a guide for someone who does that pretty much. They can just look into the standard guides but one cost level higher and ignore the parts they don’t need or ask for personal advice. I think general guides at £500, £750, £1000, £1500, £2000 maybe with some selectable parts and a guide to get audio, monitor and controls at £300 and £700 with many selectable parts in the latter case would be pretty efficient. And maybe some guidelines for people who aren’t sure if they should upgrade or not but it’s usually better to ask in the thread especially since availability and costs change quickly. I did not write it for you ;) , if you read my post it was in response to some people on a tight budget, as for writing a guide to PC building for ARMA i would be happy to collaborate with you :) perhaps we could start writing our own and compare notes down the road. ---------- Post added at 22:35 ---------- Previous post was at 22:26 ---------- HD 6850amd fx 8120 x8 8gb ram how far will this get me fps wise at medium settings? anyone with similar setup know their fps? this may or may not help you (first post) https://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/index.php?threads/how-to-increase-your-fps-when-on-an-amd-fx-cpu.71533/ also i have been reading that there are some benefits to turning off cores 1,3,5,7 especially since A3 will not really use more than 2 effectively http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?157325-Poor-performance-even-after-going-from-a-8120-to-a-4670k&highlight=8120 Edited August 3, 2013 by ric
