[SP Campaign] Delta Force: Altis

Recommended Posts

Greetings. Today I've decided to let everyone in on a little project that I've been working on in my spare time since July of this year. I have next to no experience in creating missions in Arma 3, so I spent a lot of time watching tutorials and preliminary testing before I got the idea to work on this campaign. Basically, I realized that what I was actually capable of doing was a series of short missions in the spirit of the old Delta Force 1 & 2 games by Novalogic from the '90s. Since no one had done anything like it yet, I decided that if it was going to ever be done then I might as well do it myself.

This has been a "harrowing" experience for me since I don't have any programming knowledge, but I'm pretty proud of how it's all come together. One of the things that I wanted to do for this campaign was voice acting, because I personally can't stand missions that have you read stuff while you're in the middle of a firefight or are trying to maintain situational awareness. The first mission is a prototype of that, but I'm still trying to get people together. I also wanted to keep the requirements somewhat low, so the campaign takes place on Altis and the background is loosely based on real life events.

I hope everyone enjoys it and provides me your feedback, especially if you find bugs. I'm not the best mission maker and I've tried my best to make sure things don't get too wonky, so if you do find bugs I might need some help in squashing them.

Description:

In 2015, the collapse of Greece's economy was the first domino to fall with what would eventually become the destruction of Europe. As ISIS gained more victories in the middle east, the expansion of Islamic ideology took hold during the refugee crisis where millions of muslims fled into Europe under the pretense of fleeing war.

Unbeknownst to the Europeans, this was known in Islam as Hijrah, or, a form of demographic jihad through migration. ISIS saw this crisis as an opportunity to infiltrate key parts of Europe virtually unopposed, using the island state of Altis as their staging area for weapons and training.

Despite many cries for help by the Altinian government, the United Nations ignored the issue even though ISIS controlled most of the nation. In the year 2018, when violent extremism was at an all time high and acts of terrorism were a daily occurrence, civil war across many countries broke out when ISIS released a video of their execution of 13 Altinian countrymen who were unable to leave the island because of a travel restriction imposed by the United Nations.

In the summer of 2018, the United States identified Altis as a key strategical location for the ISIS militants, and sent their most elite units to liberate the island.

Known Issues:

* Full version of JSRS doesn't make any sound for some explosions. Use JSRS Lite instead.

* Extraction objective on mission 2 doesn't always complete.

* Sometimes Charlie gets stuck on the shore in mission 4.

* Sometimes the chopper on mission 5 gets stuck.

* Unit patches aren't showing for some reason (they do in the editor).

* Framerates on the last mission are low for the first half.

* Voice acting isn't in yet.

* Radio protocol isn't proper.

* Outro video has stuttering problems.

* MCC Virtual Arsenal causes slow sentences.

Change Log:

v0.8.2

- Added failsafe trigger for mission 3 where plane wouldn't properly delete.
- Reduced damage threshold for weapons cache from 0.5 to 0.3 for completion trigger on mission 4.
- Added failsafe trigger for cache on mission 4 and removed RHS weapons cache completely.
- Removed debug hint in mission 6.
- Reduced accuracy and other AI skills for most missions.
- Increased Delta Force AI sub skills to be more bad ass.
- Changed player to "Demo specialist" on mission 4 so you can use the toolkit.

v0.8.1

- Fixed issue in mission 4 where parts of weapons cache cannot be destroyed

- Removed debug hints in mission 4

- Adjusted loadout for mission 4

- Placed some mines in mission 4

Great, another custom campaign with RHS (GTAltis, Bells tolls and Survive remade with RHS are the others... ohhhh M.E.R.C.S. is "compactible" with RHS BTW), gonna play it ASAP!

Cheers!

Hey 1337acc, I´ve noticed that the ammo caches on mission 4 are "undestructible",,, I´ve placed a charge, exploded the whole room and they were still there, untouched... then I´ve cheated with MCC and called artilery... the house was almost leveled to the ground but the ammoboxes were still there, floating over the floor (Arma3 bug, I know) had to cheat again and use Mission Won to processed to next mission (thou I´ve found and - theorically - destroyed the cache lol)

Great campaign nonetheless... the caches are the only bug so far, all extractions and triggers worked so far =)

cheers!

Thanks for your report. I was afraid that was still an issue. I had set a trigger to render them "destroyed" once you used an explosive but I'll have to look into it again. The ammo crates, I've found, will stay in the air once the building is destroyed, so I'll probably remove them entirely. Not skipping audio files, the first mission is the prototype for the voice acting and I'm trying to get people together for voice acting.

....I was like a month away from releasing a campaign with nearly the same background concept idea of the old delta force games....Lol! Figures. Glad you beat me to it! Saves me some work. Looking forward to trying it out. The background story sounds interesting.

You should release it! It may have similar ideas, but the mission structure etc will be diferent, and the Delta boys are not represented enough in Arma3-they keep losing out to those SEAL Team 6 pretty boys ;)

Hey @corporal_lib, you play with ACE right? Is it causing any issues in these missions?

If you're still looking for voice actors, I've got a recording studio quality mic, a decent enough voice, a British, and an American accent. If you need a guy for ISIS voice actors I can muster one for that aswell :D

Great campaign btw, just finished the 1st mission.

So....is anyone else experiencing the voice problem? The recorded voice acting is great, but the normal commands-regroup,hold fire etc have been slooowed down so that I sound like some kind of monster..i'll give a command, and my guy will say hooooooollldd ffiiiiiirrrreeeee..It takes about 5 seconds just for him to say it.Anyone else?Or is it a mod issue?

Now that is really strange. I've never experienced that problem.

Neither have I.It's bizarre.Unfortunately it makes the campaign to silly sounding to play :) I'll try it again without ace,asr_ai etc  to see if it fixes it.

Nah, mine looks to be far from the quality of this one and would likely lead to disappointment from players anyway. This looks to be a lot better than anything I could ever muster. If I get some time tonight I'll give the first couple missions a go.

Don't be discouraged. Just a few months ago the only thing I could do was place units down in the editor. The more you create the better you get at it.

Really enjoyed the first mission! Btw, did you think about adding ACE3 stuff? It would be cool to get a sniper and a rangecard for some long range stuff

Thanks! Yeah I've thought about that. Thought about making the campaign co-op too, but I don't know how to do that stuff yet.

There were several missions and campaigns like this in A2, in style I mean.

If you need another American voice, feel free to message me.

I'm going to have to be "that" guy...

I don't suppose you hid a way to make the player be invincible in the missions by any chance did you? Even on recruit mode I can't survive the first mission. Half the time I can't even take out that first small patrol without being instantly shot through the skull. If it's a secret you can PM me, I know some mission makers have allowDamage false built into their missions for testing that can be accessed. I suck at the game (clearly) so it would be helpful if there was a way to do that or if there's some setting built into the campaign somewhere to turn down the AI skill level.

Sure thing. I'll be in touch "soon" after I rewrite the radio protocols.

Unfortunately I didn't build anything like that into the missions. Most of the enemy AI "skill" was set relatively low in the editor, and I think you can further adjust this by going into your game settings. You might have a better chance of killing that patrol if you use stealth, or don't crest the hill too much. Are you using any AI mods, like bCombat? Also, as a heads up, when the enemy at the base is alerted, they will try to mount their .50cal's.

No AI mods, like I said recruit mode with the AI skill sliders in the options cranked all the way down. I'll just have to keep trying I guess. It took me over 300 hours of trying with recruit mode and the AI skill set as low as it would go to get through the "Survive" portion of the vanilla campaign, so this one may take me a similar amount of time. To say I suck at Arma would be an understatement. I can't even beat my own missions I make myself half the time.

Ouch. What's your play style like? Running and gunning? The missions get progressively harder, so this first one is likely the easiest of the bunch.

I have to play Arma by basically crawling 10 meters, waiting to see if anything happens, look around 360 degrees about 7 times, crawl another 10 meters, repeat, then randomly get shot from a mile away, wonder what happened, click retry until I fall asleep at my computer or finally realize I'm garbage and need to quit. Not sure how to play any more slowly or tactically than I already am. Spent 10 full minutes sneaking up on that first patrol and they still turned around and 1 shot KO'd me my last run through.
