How to install full DEV tree on Linux remote host for latest DEV server ? (Was: Cost of Windows Server 2012 ?)

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm just a little concerned here of the costs I might generate on Google Compute for a ArmA3 server. I already experimented with a Linux server but then found that only the Windows server gives access to the DEV tree. I was under the impression that I would have to pay for Windows Server 2012 but it installed no problem as a VM on Google Compute. It seems to already be fully registered and activated with a product key. I can't help be a little suspicious though. Microsoft giving away their server ? I guess they could be competing with free Linux servers, but has anyone had experience with this ? Are there any hidden costs or I am worrying too much and actually it should only work out as a few dollars a month for minimal usage ?

Is it really the Standard Edition or Hyper-V? Normally the Standard Edition can be tested up to 180 Days ... Hyper-V is for free.

Where did you get your ISO? Seems suspicious ...

/Edit

3 Minutes of google ...

Windows server images
  • $0.02 USD/hour for f1-micro and g1-small machine types
  • $0.04 USD per core/hour for all other machine types

Standard machine types, high-CPU machine types, and high-memory machine types are charged based on the number of CPUs. For example, n1-standard-4, n1-highcpu-4, and n1-highmem-4 are 4-core machines, and are charged at $0.16 USD/hour (4 x $0.04 USD/hour).

All Windows images are charged a 10 minute minimum. After 10 minutes, Windows images are charged by 1 minute increments, rounded up to the nearest minute.

OK, thanks, yes I found that as well. Maybe I'm being stupid but I don't understand it. Am I renting Windows now ? What is the "premium" ? It does not seem to show how that translates to actual costs but it looks like it should be pretty minimal, but need to be sure. But I guess I've been confused by unspecific marketing statements ...

It does seem that Microsoft have allowed "free" usage of their Windows Server 2008 & 2012 to allow easier transfer of already paid for packages to "the cloud" ...

...customers can move their existing Microsoft server application software licenses (SQL Server, SharePoint, Exchange Server, and so on) from on-premises to Google Cloud Platform without any additional Microsoft software licensing fees.

Hmmm, maybe it's true and not an M$ conspiracy  .

Plus, I'm still not clear if I really need the Windows ArmA3 server. I can't find any clear statements about the status of the Linux server, ie. if it can be updated to DEV branch, and if not, why not.

You need to install the "normal Desktop" Steam on the Server to Install Arma with it. Then you can choose to be in the Beta Programm ( Dev Version ).

This option is only available for desktop Steam, not steamcmd.

This is available for Linux, too. But needs a GUI of course.

But you need a second account with a arma license to do this.

This is all what i know about it. May be wrong ...

Ah, that's interesting. Of course. I didn't think of installing using the GUI Steam client as everything in the Bohemia wiki and other guides is geared to using SteamCMD.

But I found that I could not install the DEV Linux server ... https://github.com/dgibbs64/linuxgsm/issues/490

I'd rather use Linux than Windows Server B)

So I'll try again using - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20641150/cant-vnc-into-google-compute-engine

Thought I'd follow up on this. It is a confusing process to install the Linux server - see guide linked from my guide here - and it means having to install the full 16 Gigs of A2 and OA. Not viable for budget internet servers, which is why I was looking at windows server. However I now have a Linux PC suitable for running the Linux server on my local LAN (and possibly the net). But I still can't find out if I can install Windows server hyper-v for free and run it for free in Linux without having to install any other licensed software in it. It would be kinda nice to run Arma *Windows* server in Linux (on Hyper-V, MS even provide "LIS" Linux kernel drivers) as I might be able to hibernate the virtual server (not the parent Linux OS) to save non-savable server games.
