To be honest, you missed one thing, it's Arma. Rather you not miss anything, just It depends on the circumstances like number of people on server, what actions they perform, etc.

Arma 3 is a hard game to run. Depending on how you have your computer set up, make sure you are not launching 30+ mods at a time, or closing all high CPU usage programs with Task Manager. PIP is also something to disable as well if your a third person gamer.

Sounds like you also need to turn up your settings. From what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the CPU is the biggest determining factor of A3 performance. At low settings, the game doesn't push off much of the graphics functions to the GPU. If you turn up the settings then the CPU gives some of the graphics tasks to the GPU.

Spot on!

Turn everything up to Very High or Ultra, at medium or lower the game shunts graphics functions onto the CPU, meaning you have a $500 card sitting idle while your CPU takes the load.

1. Youtubers only get that record if they are in a non-dedicated server, not to mention it sounds like that they must be ridiculously close to an internet station. (The higher the ping, the lower FPS)

2. Most likely they either have done it in SP or they are trying to fool you. (I have a $6000 desktop PC, with all the powerful components my nearest store has, and it still runs at 30 FPS)

3. There is options in a few movie makers like Sony Vegas that can allow you to increase the refresh rate.

However, I would recommend lowering the view distance, as that effects both sides of SP and MP.

What I am trying to say is, you can adjust the setting as you like for MP, but FPS will still take an effect depending your ping rate.

Exactly what Waffel said.

Is that "low settings use cpu" true for anything other than the shadow quality setting? Because, if I remember correctly, that's the only one confirmed by a dev years ago.

Only recently people have started saying that it applies to "everything", which I find really hard to believe. For example, the object quality: the game uses lower lod models more and somehow it becomes the CPU's job?

one thing that may be worth mentioning as well is wasteland servers have a lot of crap lying around. If the mission version of wasteland you play on has not been optimised and de-cluttered + the server has low memory + poor connection all these things can add up to decrease your performance.

Now matter how good your computer is, if the server is bad/cheap your game will run slow

From my own tests in vanilla arma, the biggest FPS drags under user control are shadows under "Medium" (anywhere between 5 and 20 FPS, depending on the system) high object view distances, higher resolutions and very high or ultra Object detail.

Other factors that come into play are cheap servers, missions with too many AI and bad scripts, and bloated modlists. The Wasteland community is infamous for that. The OP's problem is probably a combination of having low shadows and playing on servers put together by someone who doesn't understand scripting.

Yep only shadows. Other things can be increased because they're almost free without fps loss unless the GPU isn't too good.

OP can max everything except I recommend Object Detail on Normal and View and Object Distances as low as he likes. Also PiP eats crazy amount of fps so disable that when in a vehicle if you don't use it.

Curious: How does ping affect fps?

Yeah, I can't see how could it have an effect.

Should be easy to test though: play on a server with good ping. Check fps. Resume all your Linux distro (/HD porn) torrent downloads. Check ping & fps.

I'm not 100% sure it directly connects to the ping per se, more to the "server's FPS". Now, I know servers don't necessarily have an FPS (especially in a dedicated server), but if the spec for the server is shite and running sluggishly thats going to have a knock-on effect to the clients.

that's always the best joke... "guys A3 runs like shit!  I turned up all to max [... including view& objectviewdistance] on my richguy-gpu and it doesnt run properly !!1eleven"

I bet no consumer cpu on the market can run 10k objectviewdistance...

I think BI should put a warning popup that informs you about extreme gpu & cpu drain when you turn objectviewdistance above 2k or something like that.

People would dismiss the popup without reading it, and still post on the forums to complain about shit FPS. Or they'd just complain about the popup....

Thats a given no that if you max everything out and you get lower fps, dont need a popup for something obvious, its been said too how far do you think you can see setting the view distance to 10k.

If you have any form of common sense then yes its a "captain obvious" popup. But these days common sense is not common any more apparently... people expect that the most expensive hardware on the market makes any form of brain input redundant (read: moving all sliders at 100%)  on top of "schweet fx" performance stealers and other stuff. That's why i suggested it.

ironically it's propably those people who participate as "pc master race" defenders in the internet console wars...

Hi Folks,

As I've read on here - seems CPU is more important than video cards - I get decent frame rates with my GTX-570 and an overclocked i2700k running at 4.5Ghz on air... I haven't tried online yet though...

=========================================================================================================================

Brand new here - I've messed with AA and BF series before - anybody know how many posts I have to make before I'm allowed to post my own question ?

Seems a little odd - the newb's like me - who need a little help can't post new threads with our own questions - - - LOL - - - we need a lttle guidance more than others...

;)

Regards,
Scott

Its an anti-spambot measure aimed at preventing spam from newly registered bots. That said, it hasn't exactly done a sterling job of keeping the 'addons & mods: complete' section (as well as other sub-forums) free from IS propaganda in recent weeks.

Hi Jackel,

Thanks for responding - LOL - I kind of figured - I can assure you I'm not a spam-bot....

Maybe now I'm a post closer to being able to post a few questions as I do have some - been working my way through the SP campaign trying to get a feel for Arma - the AI seems to have super human detection capabilities...

Regards,

Scott
