TOH South Asia Map

Recommended Posts

BIS recently released the assets for Take On Helicopters, which you can access here:

https://www.bistudio.com/community/licenses/licensed-data-packages

All credit to Bohemia for releasing this!

The immense size of the South Asia map, 122km X 122km or 14884km^2, really interested me and I dug through the .pbos to see if I could get it working in Arma 3.

http://helicopters.takeonthegame.com/about-the-game/environment/south-asia/

Lo and behold, I was successful.

The size of the mod is a little over 8gb, 6gb is map data, 2gb is repackaged assets. It is standalone from AiA even though it uses takistan/zargabad buildings.

I did end up including water.pbo, which just has the ambient water vehicles. It has no effect on how the map plays and since I only realized after I had uploaded it and it's only 152mb, I will not change it for now.

Even though the only work I did was to package some .pbos and upload them, I decided to release it anyway to see if I could create interest in this map.

The immense size has it's downsides, a big part of the map is filled with barren desert and empty mountains and the ground detail is pretty low.

I'll state again that most of the work that went into this is by BIS and their Take On Helicopters team, and all credit is to them.

Very nice! But you know why the normal map looks kinda odd?

I imagine it's due to the massive size of the map

That being said, we grabbed the USAF pack and flew some sorties. Ended up having a blast (pun intended) and would play again. Being a DCS player the map terrain doesn't bother me too much, it's a pretty great map for it's size in ArmA.

I've wanted TOH map ports to ArmA for so long... this is kickass, at least for air to air or air to ground combined arms missions. Gonna try this out for sure!

Great project! Can you put as less as possible objects and vegetation on it, so that map doesnt lag in aerial combat and with e.g. 5km VD ?

Cant wait to fly a F-22 over it ... :)

I can't edit the map as I do not know how to. All I did was put the required .pbos in a folder.

I see, I missed that part. I guess a license update would be handy.

So....pushing to Armaholic :)

Do these files include the Seattle map? (The ones from BIS not yours)

I'd like to see that in ARMA.

Seattle is included, the needed files should be in archive 7-11 and some required us files in 2.

At the least, you can ignore 3-6 as those are the South Asia files.

Is this worth the download? Sorry to ask but I have never played TOH and the size of this is huge.

It's for you to decide. It's designed for helicopters so the ground detail is bad, it doesn't make ground forces impossible, but it does make it more ugly. For flying around with aircraft it is amazing.

If I may, I'd recommend these mods

Make sure you check out Firewills F16 as well, it's an awesome plane.

Tinter, if you have the files do you think you could upload Seattle too? My internet is being really slow atm and the downloads keep failing for some reason.

Would be great if the map had actual roads, that way AI can recognize them as pathways for convoys and even be used for scripting purposes, such as civilian traffic or roadside IED generation scripts. That'd be the top thing I'd like to see in the map, but it is awesome regardless. Roads would help with mission making a lot though. Also, there's an annoying issue with objects turning black when you get close to them. There's also an error that pops up when you start ArmA 3, when you open the map in the editor, and when you destroy a building. But of all things, I'd just like roads if that'd be doable.

Map performance is excellent! With maximum view distance and almost everything on Ultra, I get somewhere between 45 and 140 frames; depends where I am and what's going on in the map/mission.

Great work, this map has a lot of potential.

Would be possible to port those maps to Arma 2 without facing too many issues?

I'm asking you this because the Seattle map is one of the best thing i have ever seen, and i wanted to know if those files would work well in Arma 2 too.

Thank you.

If you have Arma 2 and TKOH you can make it work flawlessly by using TKOH: Rearmed. Otherwise, have a try at throwing the mod in, it'll work more or less the same it does in A3 probably.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I've tried to do that with many Pbos taken from the TOH demo several months ago, but i failed.

That being said, i'll try to accomplish my original goal with these new ones, but i would like to ask you another question:

Have you only modified the config.cpp to port this wonderful terrain?

I did actually not modify any of the files. These are as is as from the archives, the only difference is which files I included.

---------- Post added at 00:17 ---------- Previous post was at 00:15 ----------

I'm sure there's relatively little effort required to fix some of the issues, specifically pop-up errors. Map editing could prove to be tougher, I have no experience there.

If anyone is interested in modifying it, I will gladly try and help whatever way I can.

I can put the files together and do a quick test later today. Uploading will take some time.

I realize now that Seattle doesn't work quite as well.

I don't really know what to do about this, but in this state I don't really want to spend time uploading it.

I can't seed a torrent like this myself, anyone can create a torrent, but they will have to seed first.

If someone has already downloaded it, they could start seeding if they wanted to.

f'n hell, thank you!

Amazing to see this ingame, it's so brilliant for large scale tank battles. Now we only need the 32 km viewdistance from TOH and we're set.

Actually, you could probably do long range border raid missions (since the map depicts the border region between karzhegistan and takistan, there is a massive border checkpoint and a long fence through the mountains) as well as deep recon special forces stuff. There's a weapons testing site on the map, and there's also Shapur on the map including the airfield.

The thing that made the map not work for me a lot of the time was the absence of roads. Making convoy missions was impossible. Is that kind of thing even possible, technically with this massive map?
