drakedaeron 13 Posted May 4, 2015 I find the textures very good. Obviously, it's not similar to the BIS textures, but it's necessary to know that to make textures is something of long, difficult, and boring. In my opinion, unless really having an artist in his ranks or somebody among whom it is the job, I doubt that that is possible to have very very beautiful textures. 880zero 11 Posted May 5, 2015 As for the rocket launcher, the chrome looks really cool on it. Can't wait to see it in-game. I don't know why everyone keeps attributing it to chrome, its no where near as glossy and bright as chrome. I'm using color data from real life materials compiled by Quixel, its the equivalent of a roughened polished steel, as it appears in Halo 2A.

I'm using color data from real life materials compiled by Quixel, its the equivalent of a roughened polished steel, as it appears in Halo 2A. If everyone is giving you that response, then it's probably because it looks like chrome, and it does. Even if it's not exactly chrome, it's still a lot more like chrome than the rocket in H2A. It's not a bad look for it, but if that's not your intention then it's better that you get that feedback. I'd recommend making it a bit more rough or maybe darker, that might help: http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20150328015500/halo/images/9/95/H2A_Render_M41Rocket-FirstPerson.jpg Another video that may help with the rocket launcher along with other weapons:
nightovizard 20 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) http://i.imgur.com/duQUhFm.jpg It is looking good, how many islands are there? Is there any flat ground that would have an airfield? Little outposts/towns? Maybe you could add 1 screenshot from the terrain seen from above so we can see the layout and if there is any bigger island in there. The map is 20 x 20 km right? Edit: About the rocket launcher shininess, let's wait till it is ingame, a render is quite different from an ingame screenshot, lets see how it looks in a ingame screenshot and decide later. Maybe it looks better than you expect. Edited May 5, 2015 by nightovizard

Macser 776 Posted May 5, 2015 I think it looks great whether it's compared to the halo equivalent or not. Very high quality work. The confusion might be coming from the fact it looks very "clean". The specular level is high on the halo model. But it looks like there's some texture to the specular map.

Right at the back of the tube barrel and on the tubes. Chrome is a mirror surface. Go and pick up a wrench or some type of roughened steel tool and notice that even though they're beat up to shit, they still have a reflection. This is no different and I think everyone is largely ignorant about how things should look compared to real life because video games in the last couple of years are finally starting to look closer to real life in terms of glossy reflections that its alien to most people because games have not been able to produce these results. trooper226 15 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) Thing, is it is super shinny in H2A http://i.imgur.com/I8OpJbK.png http://i.imgur.com/0ExW5Da.png http://i.imgur.com/rrTeMir.png You are taking the screenshots from the same direction the sunlight is coming from, the actual rocket launcher isn't reflecting ALL of it's environment around it, but some of it. From the renders he posted, it seemed to be reflecting all incoming light with a blurred reflection. It is shiny, yes, but not chrome-looking, neither in the campaign nor in multiplayer. That render has a high gloss, too. That particular render isn't reflecting as much light as the one you produced for the mod. And I'm not so sure it's the right attitude to tell everyone else they're wrong, that's part of being a texture artist. When a bunch of people give you the same critique on your work, then it's probably something that should be looked into. I'm an artist as well, so me being ignorant on the topic of surface materials isn't what's happening, and I don't think that's what's happening with others either. If you asked an average Joe, he'd probably say it looks like chrome, and even though he's an average Joe and the material itself isn't perfect chrome, his critique shouldn't be taken lightly. It's not like none of us have gone outside and seen how things work in the real world. And I'm not trying to come off as a jerk or to be rude, just sharing my thoughts on the texture. Like I said, I think as it stands it looks perfect and you could keep it like that, but if you're not intending for it to look like chrome and everyone else thinks it does, then you should probably change it a little bit. Maybe you could add 1 screenshot from the terrain seen from above so we can see the layout and if there is any bigger island in there. The map is 20 x 20 km right? The map is 10x10km. There will be between 1-2 dozen islands of varying size and shape with Teribus being the more dominant one. There will be some form of an airfield, but the terrain variance is a bit too busy for an long enough airfield to support vanilla fixed wing aircraft. There are a few outposts planned, including some highly reminiscent of ones you may have visited in a previous incarnation of the Halo franchise at one point or another. We're still messing with the terrain layout at this point, so posting a map of it would be misleading since it will probably change drastically from when you see it. Well since as far as I'm concerned all OPTRE aircrafts are going to have VTOL capabilities, all that is needed is some kind of hangars and an open flat space to take off and land safely. between 12 and 24 islands in a 10 x 10 km map? that sounds cool though the islands are going to be quite small. If you're still messing wih the terrain layout everything I can suggest for now is that you take a look at fantasy maps, there are some very cool island shapes: http://th08.deviantart.net/fs71/200H/i/2010/022/b/2/Belnkre_Continental_Map_by_magbhitu.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jg_jDvPAxxE/TeyOZ8rTIoI/AAAAAAAAA8E/L0xRxHEN_yQ/s1600/Monday+Map+17.jpg http://www.terminally-incoherent.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/blank-sm.jpg some custom civilization V maps have pretty good layouts too: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=337297665&searchtext= http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=422138969&searchtext= http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=307989444

taro8 806 Posted May 6, 2015 Random musing: it occured to me that I didnt saw any UNSC infantry weapons designed for use in zeo-g and microgravity enviroments. Due to Newton's third law you cant just use normal gun in space. I think that either electormagnetic or directed energy (ie. lasers) weapons would have to be used in such conditions. Maybe Im just unaware of such weapon in Halo-verse.
