The Unsung Vietnam Mod 3.0 WIP THREAD

Recommended Posts

Hi Pierre

You will be able to make the mission require only unsung when we release the bravo version.

Not too long now. We should be testing the first chunk of it in 2-3 weeks time.

We have ported most of the kit over now, but it needs significant bug-finding on our locked test server with the testing crew.

cheers

EB

Second call for volunteers

The Unsung mod team is looking to recruit 1-3 experienced model developers to help out with the following kinds of tasks:

- add A3 animations/physics to p3ds
--- m113a1 (based on m113s already done by pook)
--- T34/ T54

- import new high quality models to p3d and help animate:
--- willys jeep
--- BAR
--- K50m
--- MAS-49/56
--- Ontos (needs UV mapping too)

- add missing selections to rescued/unbinned older content:
--- c123k provider
--- nva support truck x3
--- US trucks x2, gun trucks x2, m37 and m43 trucks
--- 3 us support trucks

-make new
--- suppressed barrel for M/45 model
--- mig17 from a basic mesh

- convert from BIS base models and retro-fit to vietnam era
--- ch53
--- ch47 (including the gunsagogo gunship)

- replace F4 cockpit with Aplion's cockpit model

The team is a busy and motivated gang who can help out with a lot of the work around these core modeling tasks (configs, sounds, testing, troubleshooting etc). Due to our own time commitments and energy levels we are only interested in volunteers with a proven ability in using modeling software (blender or 3d studio and O2).

Time commitment could be open-ended depending on your interest and motivation.  We need you now for about a month at the least!

In order to communicate effectively you must also speak passable english.

Please send me a PM if you can help with one or two of these tasks.

Hi everyone,

Unsung "Miette NAM" mission released on ArmaHolic!

I'm looking for updates in order to clean external addons like Medium Utility Helicopter (Nice mod but if Unsung can be self-sufficient for helos and jets....)

Need some feedback and don't hesitate for new scenarios ideas.

Thanks

Pierre

Hi Pierre,

I love your mission. I have been playing it since your 1st release. I had a brief look at the updated version but have not played it yet (mission 3).

A couple possible mission ideas if you are interested;

- simple night ambush on VC in Indian country. A typical sort of Vietnam era mission. Helo insert with short walk to ambush site. After the ambush the weather turns bad and the choppers are grounded forcing the US squad to walk back to Camp Sarge encountering local force VC and booby traps along the way.

- Provide convoy security. Similar to you own other mission but now its the US turn to move a truck convoy along the road and try to survive. This will be much better once Unsung have released truck models.

my only question is why is the guns a go-go no longer used?

Too high maintenance and prone to crashes and being shot up because they weren't as fast as huey gunships

there were many experiments in vietnam, especially with airborne weaponry, as the helicopter that could carry weapons was a whole new evolving beast there (the first AGMs fired in anger were launched from privately owned UH-1Bs in 1972 carrying out TOW missile tests).

The advent of shoulder launched missiles made offensive choppers need to be hidden, or very distant (with countermeasures), doing pop-up or extreme range attacks.  They are also fast and agile to evade AAA.  The chinook is not agile, nor small, as seen recently in Afghanistan it makes a very tempting target, and its easy to hit with not much armour plate to protect its occupants or vital parts.

Operating cost:

UH-1H: $835 per flight hour

CH-47D Chinook: $2,403 - $2,723 per flight hour

Unit replacement cost:

UH1H $4.7m

CH47D $39m

so yeah, Guns-agogo was another vietnam war inspired anomaly - there are many!

we won't be getting that M50 Ontos to play with unless some brave soul steps forward to patiently UV map our shiny new model.

Isn't that a picture of the M551 Sheridan ?

Conceptually it was a good idea; light tank that could be airlifted for airborne units, 152mm big gun suitable for short rang infantry support (mostly HE), and wire guided missiles fire through the main barrel in case you do come upon an enemy tank. Conceptually a good idea not so much in real life, it was very prone to breakdown, the recoil was so big that it rocked the whole tank (and crew) well beyond what can normally be expected and eventually causes stress fractures around the gun well.

The picture is the m60a2 "starship" heavy tank if im not wrong. The gun was also used on the Sheridan.

While we have the tanks from A2 including Sheridan and M60 don't expect any of these "one-off" or "experimental" or "prototype" weapons or platforms.  We barely have enough manpower to complete the things we have, and certainly don't have the time to work on "interesting but irrelevant" artifacts like those.  If anyone wanted to help out with the mod, we could certainly use the help!  Lots of "gold grinding" work to cut through.
