Lack of design consistency when it comes to mods

Recommended Posts

I would like to bring to attention the idea that most arma 3 mods DO NOT follow specialised style-guidelines and regularly fail to conform to them. Making so many mods and missions look strangely out of place.

It would support your argument better, and help the discussion, if you would state which guidelines you're speaking of, and citing some examples.

You'd like that, wouldn't you! You'd have us all conform, so every mod is in line with your conformist puppet ideals!

Dare to be different, mod makers! Stand up to this jack-booted conformist! Stand up to The Man! SMASH THE SYSTEM!

For most people, modding is a hobby for which they are willing to sacrifice a lot of their time rather than something they would benefit from, financially. Some mods are years in the making, sometimes the author doing all things on his own. It is free content basically, sometimes doing things that were originally thought not possible or hardly viable in this game or engine. I'd say you should be a bit more reasonable with your expectations and appreciate the effort and time that goes into making mods possible. :)

Also, the lack of design guidelines can be a positive thing too, as it allows for a greater dynamic thought and creativity than you would see among payed and directed game designers.

Those who have brilliant ideas about how modders should behave should show us what they can do instead of sitting on their arse.

god i said i would not touch this. but one who has yet to make a mod or do texture work should not be bitching. at least like i said in the open to the general public. how ever still not a good idea in the open even if u have made one to talk bad about other peoples work.

Isnt NOT following specialised style-guidelines what Modding is all about?

If everyone followed a set style we wouldn't have 75% of the great mods we do have now.

Thanks to all the modders who venture into their own thoughts to create great mods and enhance gameplay for those of us who cant Mod.

@Polymath

1. What "guidelines" would you suggest... I fail to see any that would work in a tangible fashion , and how do you propose these are "enforced"?

2. I understand that there are always going to be shitty arma 2 port mods, shitty life mods etc... just dont play them and wait for stuff like RHS which is actually high quality and not some stolen turbosquid model textured in MS paint and uploaded to like virus.ru.br.arma3lyfedownload.net like some arma 3 mods.

Hopefully Make Arma Not War will be something that can help fix inconsistency.

3. You want to "bring this to the attention" of who? All mods arent going to be suddenly changed to be a certain way, nor will BI see your one post and make some descesion to do anything... what did you forsee your post "sparking", is this meant to bring some deep phisophical converstation about arma 3 modding

Also not sure what you meant by 'design' , probably a poor choice of wording... did you mean something more along the lines of like, mods literally not looking good together ( visual quality) or for instance, using different magazines and scopes etc ??

ps. Fuck why did I not realize this was going to b e my 999th post....

I wish to bring it to YOUR attention, that your post does not conform to, follow, or correctly adhere to the specific style of post the BIS forums are used to. Thereby you have failed to follow your own non-conformist conforming actions, in so which, as to follows you have broken the guidelines of post style, thereby forthwith I request you withdraw your statement hence after deliberation, but not yet uncertainly conformed.

Your failure to conform to the non conformist mannerisms and stylish guidelines of postal ability, have caused a rift in the community, and as such no one can go on anymore.

I think his poorly worded point was that user interfaces of mods/missions maybe should follow some common theme on visual style and functionality. Not that the core content - units, maps, missions etc - should all look alike. But it's obvious that the community will never produce such a guide, let alone agree to follow one.

Common sense, Bohemia and similar games in general have already created a "guideline" for us. So it's not a bad idea to point out that maybe modders shouldn't try to reinvent the wheel just for the sake of being different and to stand out from the competition. Instead, strive to follow "the Arma theme" in UIs. At least up to the point where it still works fluently.

There's a reason microsoft makes User Experience Interaction Guides, so we don't end up with such UIs like the one in Playwithsix for example; remember the first time you opened it? The horror? The deer-in-the-headlights look on your face when you realize you don't have any idea what is this white blob on your screen? Sure, eventually everyone will learn to use it efficiently and it is kinda cool but very counterintuitive at first.

On the other hand, I don't see this as a problem in Arma in any way; mods have pretty uniform user interfaces. A pointless thread IMO.

Well then I suggest you learn how to mod, rather then what seems to me...trolling, and start creating your own mods that conform to this idea you have.

I love all the variations of mods out there and that most modders think outside the box to create amazing content and the fact that I love the most is I can pick and choose what I want to use. Without these persons I would not be playing this game which is hard to imagine since I've been playing these games (OFP and the Arma Series) since 2003 and I've never looked back. So I salute the men (and women if there are any) of this community who put hours and hours of work and ideas together to give us amazing content which is sometimes breathtaking and without these modders creating content which is outside of the box and nonconformist, I believe has allowed the game itself to expand in content and mechanics among many other things.

Oh and there are no "specialised style-guidelines".

End rant.

I tryed to stay out of this tread but...

Let me say this, I'm not a modder, but I've always had ideas. BIS makes damn good, nicely polished models, and content, in a small amount. Now the thing about Modders, is they make what they would like to see in game in hopes others will enjoy it as they do. Now while some modders make content not to "par" with standard BIS Arma 3 quality or play style, that's their mod, their time. However, you also have those modders, the ones that stand out who make content above BIS standard. Not to give any examples but you know what I mean. But the modding community is vast. There are 3 kinds of sections to modding (in my opinion, so don't judge me), you have the High End mods, the Middle End mods, or Arma 3 BIS standard, and than you have the regular end. If your looking for content that fits into the game, or goes above your expectations, look for mods from the first two. If your a regular person and appreciate the modding community because it's Arma, than like me, you'd look for all the nods that fit your niche, from all three area's of modding. But anyhow, don't expect all mods to be perfect in quality, or play style. That's sort of what I thought it would be like before Alpha, but realized that in reality, making mods is time consuming and it doesn't take much to realize some people don't have that much time, and do their best with what try can pull off. They do a darn good job anyhow, so. All mods on par? No. Find those that are. Don't care? GET ALL THE MODS!!! =D

HOWEVER, i want to see you make a series of mods and follow this guideline.

- All content must be perfectly andseemlessly desgned to fit into the BIS presented Armaverse. This means anything made for civilians or The AAF must be Dominantly European gear. Anything for Opfor must be Russian/Chinease/Iranian technology in development, or on the drawing board. All NATO gear must be as modern as the latest ACR, no M4's. Any vehicle must be capable of multi Terrain use in multiple Enviornments, and the Models must be perfectly fitting in quality with new BIS designs and quality sch as the Taru, the BTR-K Kamysh. Nothing should be out of place, and the setting is 2035. Good luck.
