[WIP] CH-46 SeaKnight

Recommended Posts

Haha well then im spoken wrong. Never knew there was civilian seaknights. I don't even get why they have civilian seaknights lol. Maybe for just sightseeing or something because that's weird if it is a long distance transport.

Ejem...:j:

I love this British Airways "military" chinook:

Technically that's not allowed by license, so it's quite unlikely that you got that permission.

Love the new pics! Its looking great so far. The first image is truly the total shape. Nice job so far.

Another update.

I've finished redoing the model and I'm happy with the way its turned out. I still have to finish most of the cockpit and fix the seating in the rear but once that's all finished I can start adding the textures and focus on getting it in game.

To add to that the doors and windows are there on the top image its just hard to see them without it being textured.

I'm not sure, but I think they are used as sky cranes; in which they are awesome. For transport they would be quite expensive.

Here's the final textured version.

This is the unarmed version, I will focus on the armed ones later :)

I'am however having problems with the glass. It seems to stop some textures coming through when looking through the glass into the aircraft, if anyone can help me out that would be great

Problem

Select all the glass textures and go to faces-move to top

Also the heli is looking extremely nice. Good job!

@islesfan186 I'll look into it, I can remember konyo done something like that with his MH-47E so when I get to that stage I may ask him about it.

Looking great Deltagamer. I hope that cockpit will eventually get some love. Peral and FullerPJ should be well acquainted with the switches to make it more interactive up there...just an idea seeing as how you helped with the USAF Mod.

@Raptor 6 Actual Thanks. The cockpit will definitely be given a lot of attention, right now it needs it but I've always felt that the cockpits are the most important thing for modelling as its normally the thing that makes a mod that little bit better. I want to give this helicopter the send off it deserves in ArmA so I will put a lot of effort into this. I will also be giving this to the rest of the usaf team when ready for the future mods they plan on.

Just remember that most of the droop comes from the main rotor hub/spindle and the blades only really flex about 1/3 of the way from the hub, the rest of the blade is straight.

Wow the textures are awesome! Maybe a little more detail to the textures though. :(

EDIT:

Maybe another version of the seaknight in the pack that adds the light "usaf" coloring. or the light grey color I should say.

Just found the official name but its called:

"Aircraft Grey"

ANA: 512

FS 595b: 16473

Here's the final textured version.

Select the window mesh, click the "Faces" tab and scroll down to "Move to top". This particular thing will occur any time you paste something behind an already active alpha channel.

@NodUnit Thanks a lot, dezkit already told me about it but the help is appreciated.

@Tristen2NT The USAF to my believe never used these aircraft at all or at least to the extent the USMC used them. The texture that is on it is going to be the final in-game one, it still needs small adjustments but it is HD and looks fine to me. It might just be the low res pictures I uploaded as its purposely small for the thread.

Thanks everyone for all the support :627:

Wow I remember being lucky enough to fly in one of those British Airways Chinooks when I was a very little lad - must have been 80 - 82 somewhere around then.

I remember we boarded in from the top of a "Sky Scraper" well, a tall building somewhere in London and DAMN it was loud !!

Anyway cool memory

Yeah I know they don't use them but Marines on their helicopters use the "Aircraft Grey" paint that USAF aircraft have. the light light grey color.

Here's an interesting wip project for ArmA2, especially regarding the animations

Thank you Deltagamer, can't wait to see a ch-46, very much needed!

Great find there Lucapec.....hopefully, deltagamer will be able to do these animations as well, and actually release it to the community.

@Tristen2NT The only colour that I'm going to use is the main one they normally had, the kind of grey colour. I know about the Vietnam colours and other ones around the world but the texture you see on the model is the one that will be initially released with.

@lucapec Thanks for that link, that's going to be a good reference for the doors and cockpit. I will try my best to get the mod like that.

@Raptor 6 Actual Yeah I hope I get the chance to release it as well, there should be certain features on the model that proves that it isn't from a previous mod so it shouldn't run into any problems.

Are you thinking of adding some M134's to the helicopter? I don't know if its realistic but wargame has them so they must be doing something right :P. WIP pictures are looking great cannot wait until its out.

@BagPiperGuy I've never seen one with a m134, could be interesting though.

Does anyone know if a m134 or GAU-19 has been used on these birds before?

No clue but you might as well add it, seems like a good idea to me, assuming its not diffuclt or really time consuming to add it, its not like anyone is forced to use the version with that stuff, then again I dont know if your one of those like uber realism guys or what, but it seems pretty plausible to me.

@MikeTim I think I will add it then. I'm not really a realism guy when it comes to helicopters, I'm normally more a perfectionist haha :D the only thing I'm worried about is the size of the weapon, the adapter it will be sitting in and the windows but I should be able to get around it.

haven't made my mind up on what to do

I've never seen Miniguns mounted on the Sea Knight, or its replacement for that matter. From what I have seen, the only helo in the Marine Corps inventory that regularly mounts M134's are Hueys, and even then its when they're acting in a gunship/reconnaissance role. The Minigun is a sweet weapon system but in reality its rarely used outside of special operations aircraft in the united states. In part this is probably because most of our helos just don't need that much firepower, your typical transport, such as a CH-46 or 53, doesn't have any business sticking around a hot LZ long enough to need a weapon that goes through that much ammunition. The reason you see so many spec ops birds, such as Airforce Pavehawks and Army SOAR birds, use it is because they are often times required to stay on station to provide support to personnel on the ground, as well as not always having proper escorts, so the additional firepower and suppression capabilities are much more warranted. There is also the weight to be considered, not just the gun itself but also the ammunition as well. Your typical door gunner rocking a 240 probably doesn't have more than 800-1000 rounds, where as to get more than a few minutes of use out of a minigun your gonna need 2000-4000 rounds, then again the weight issues kinda goes out the window once we start talking 50's. The M3 50 cal is more heavily used in Marine helos than any other gun. Its all I've ever seen CH-53's and 46's use, and most of the time that you see Huey's rocking a minigun, you can just about count on it that the door gun on the other side is a 50.

I would say go with M3 50 cal as its the only door gun I've ever seen them mount. Maybe some other users mount Minis occasionally but if your sticking with the Marines version I'd say leave it out.

Bear in mind I am only speculating as to why special ops birds use of Miniguns, as well as the weight argument. Maybe someone with better knowledge of the subject can chime in on this. I'm only speaking from what time I've spent around Aircraft while I was in.
