gamespy shutdown on May 31st...

Exclamation End of Gamespy

Important notice: effective May 31, 2014, Gamespy will cease providing all hosted services for all games.

This is going to affect multiplayer in our games that use Gamespy for matchmaking, cd keys authentification and NAT traversal from Arma: Resistance to Arma 3. We are planning to introduce an alternative solution using Steam to Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead and Arma 3 users.

Other games (Take On Helicopters, Arma 2, Arma 2: Free, Arma, Arma: Cold War Assault) will have more limited multiplayer experience with loss of server browser, cd key authentification and NAT traversal systems. That said, direct IP connection to servers should work even after Gamespy services are no longer available.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Marek or someone at BIS,

What is the reaction to Gamespy shutting down? Is BIS dedicated to a Steam server listing/authentication solution?

I am a software developer and have an Arma Launcher under development that works similarly to DayZ Commander. This project, of course, relies on a service to hook up with to continue my project. I am also experimenting with a WCF service that if deployed on a dedicated environment could potentially replace the Gamespy service. It would be great to hook up with some Arma 2 and Arma 3 devs and talk further on how the community can help out, or better yet, hear back how BIS has solved the server listing issue so we can rest at ease.

Thanks,

Aaron

(Currently running 3 dedicated Arma 2 servers and 1 dedicated Arma 3 server. http://moosemilker.com)

Latest beta on steam enables steam server listing.

Patch contains MP steam lobby and is distributed only for steam version of game (Arma2: Operation Arrowhead Beta)

To be to able to use Steam lobby you must

- run game from Steam client, so proper application ID is used

- to start public server you must not be hidden behind NAT

- to start DS, steam_appid.txt must be present (so DS knows product ID)

- steam dlls must be present

For more details please read http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?175463-End-of-Gamespy

You can now redeem your retail key of Arma 2, Arma 2 OA, DLC in steam so you can get the steam server functionality.

.....

In addition to the free game, Bohemia Interactive today also announced that people who have previously bought a non-Steam version of Arma 2, including the expansions and DLC, are now able to redeem their product on Steam using their original Arma 2 or Arma 2 expansion game’s CD Key (often found inside the box or provided by the reseller via e-mail).

.....

I am still not sure what they use for authentication (their own key server or steam account authentication) and if battlleye is in anyway affected by this move (will a battleye ban in Dayz/Arma 3 affect Arma 2 or Arma 2 affect Dayz/Arma 3?).
