Hey guys Smokedog and myself figured its time to create a thread and let you guys know about a new terrain we have begun working on, Jalalabad.

Its a roughly a 27000 meter terrain which covers from the main city of Jalalabad to the northern mountains. Currently we have begun porting and upgrading buildings from a2 takistan, as well as creating our own.

This project is in its very early stages as we are gathering all the structures, vegetation, ect. we will need and upgrading them to a3 standards which include ,physics and better particle effects and so on.

As we progress we will include more screenshot and video of our wip.

And currently everything is subject to change as this is a very very early wip video just to show off some of the buildings and the terrain.

Currently were upgrading model from AO. Heres a shop that has just been given completely breakable glass from the windows to the light bulbs, all 41 glass pieces 🙂

All the sprawling urban hugeness and excitement of Arma 2 Fallujah - and then some! (approx 6 times the size, if I remember correctly!!)

This promises to be an all time classic project - the new enhanced assets, the new improved landscape... it's all hugely exciting!

Well done guys! this is the terrain I'm most looking forward to at the moment!!

Wish you lots of success with this project. Funny how many of us want A2 type terrains for A3. I remember PMC doing some huge terrains for A1, they performed really well, but roads were an issue back then (not their fault perhaps). This is a forward looking project with a foot in the past, no bad thing.

Good luck with it..:)

Good ol JBad, keep in mind the airbase there was a staging ground for many operations throughout the region. So I hope you guys have some kind of military installation planned. Good luck and I certainly look forward to this.

Fantastic, this is what ArmA 3 has needed for a while now, new maps and the release of some very exciting scripts. Cannot wait to try this beauty out!!

This is awesome spent the majority of my deployment there in 2010. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Hey warlord ,

My best friend and army liaison spent his deployment there. In fact when smoke and I were looking for a nice afghan terrain it was him who suggested jbad, with the airbase and huge mountains it looked perfect. So if by airbase you mean the entire airstrip then stay tuned :D

First off: WOW!

This looks great, looking forward to following the development of this map.

Can hardly wait for the finished result :ok:

Now if BIS only would bring back civilian modules, or even better, configurable civilian modules, so that you could choose which group of civs (middle eastern, african etc.) or type of placement (city, village, farm etc.) you wanted to spawn on your map. Maybe grab a few pointers from the ALiVE guys ;-)

Well if CLafghan doesn't get updated for A3 then I'll move my CAS course to this map... I was in Kunar so I didn't spend much time around Jbad (only transient) so yeah... if you need a tester :)

Hehe. Move it here anyway ;)

And we'll def keep you in mind for testing! Right now it's still no where near testing were still porting/building structures and objects for the terrain.

I just might since Clafghan is choking my computer and something more optimized is preferable given the surrounding area as well, so I'll keep tabs on this one then :)

Been hearing Smoke go on about this for ages, it's great to finally see something 'official' haha! Great potential, this'll turn out one of the best maps for A3 I'm sure of it.

If any one is interested in how a terrain takes shape and forms over time ill put a few vids and pics up to show how much it changes over time as it gets built here is the first when M1lkm8n first was testing terrain size it just has a make do satimage texture but you can scope the scale of how big it is it has more land mass than altis as we have no see round our terrain

VERY cool, I love the buildings!

What did you use to create the terrain, if I may ask?

... Terrain Builder doesn't actually create the terrain model.. i am talking about the model of the terrain! Atm I used l3dt but I just wanna know what he uses.

I figured that was what you were talking about. I actually started to reply but my iPhone erased the answer before I could hit submit :(

anyway we grabbed the dem from USGS which is 3 arc second (90 meters). Not the best data but the best free data for this region we could fine. it came out fairly nice but will need much tweaking around the roads. for the sat image we are creating a base image in l3dt then the rest, such as fields, will be added from real sat images.

Ah okay, I see, it looked sorta like you guys used some sort of terrain modelling tool for it, but I guess I was wrong :P

Anyways, I have a question about L3DT, I have been creating the actual terrain hightmap with GeoControl 2, but it appears that the hightmap size is to big for the basic l3dt version, in the video I was watching they only really used l3dt to smooth the terrain and adjust the water level, is this needed or can I Just import the hightmap directly into TerrainBuilder?

Also, if I do need to do something like that to the map, is there another tool I could use that allows hightmap sizes of 4096 and higher?
