Grumman C-1A Trader for A2OA - WIP

Recommended Posts

C-1A Trader was a COD (Carrier-Onboard-Delivery) aircraft. Its main task was to provide supplies/mails for an aircraft carrier and transport soldiers to and from the a-carrier. I work on it as I thought that it might become a nice addition to any single-player campaign or a step in career of a bomber pilot. It may also play a major role in navy transport/bomber pilots training of landings onto a deck as it flies slow and stable. In coop mission it can give the impression of being a small part of the war since the players/pilots would be transferred into Nimitz on-board the Trader at the beginning of the mission. It can also serve as a supplier for surrounded/attacked base, giving navy pilots some tasks to do during long game play other then CAS missions.

Currently, Trader is flyable and in 75% done. It is fully compatible with JDOG's Nimitz. What supposed to be finished in next week are: sounds, some GeoLOD/ShadowLOD corrections, cockpit instruments and perhaps cargo compartment textures. It's gonna be made in two versions - cargo and transport of soldiers, differentiated only by content of a cargo compartment (seats vs cargo boxes).

Very cool. Will the wings be foldable like the A-3?

The aircraft has foldable wings, more or less similarly to the A-3 in this variant. It have not been done yet but sure, I am gonna do it :)

Small update of C-1A.

Cockpit and cargo compartment's textures are finished in 75%. Also, four additional camouflages have been added to the package:

- NAS Alameda AB,

- USS Oriskany,

- USS America,

- one coming from early 60s - VR24 squadron's detachment, in dark blue painting, from USS Forrestal,

- USS Coral Sea, ca. 1966

There is a paint kit available as well, so other camouflages can be easily made.

Thanks, mate. To make it clear - I did one of those camos only, of Coral Sea aircraft, based on Paint Kit by Marcel Ritzema. The others come from original C-1 package for FSX and two different authors. The Trader sounds, flies and behaves great. It will come with static wreck as well, as I have just done it.

Trader is on its final phase of production. Backlighting, cargo version and script by Ared (giving its crew a chance to jump out after being hit and destroyed by antiaircraft missiles) have been added to the package. Small corrections of sounds is the next step then testing flights in MP.

Cargo version, max payload: 2400 kg

Nice! The only thing that wreck is missing is some dirt/scratch marks on the lower part.

I have a buddy who was flight engineer on the COD with the Nimitz and I want to order him a model with the right numbers on it for his 62nd birthday. I do know it was named salt 1. Can anyone help me with this or send me pictures? 1978 to 1979

It seems to me that your buddy was flying with VRC-50 Det. into USS Nimitz during her 1979-1980 Mediterranean/Indian Ocean cruises. (see here: http://www.navysite.de/cruisebooks/)

You may ask at its association website - http://www.vrc-50.org/

It shouldn't be hard tho since "Rawhides" were gradually converting into C-2A and had only 6 Traders at that time. Good luck!
