Finding servers...noob

Recommended Posts

I am having some trouble understanding how to find good servers in A3. Most of the listed servers in any given game mode (if listed at all) only have a few smatterings of people. Nothing major. What are the coloured symbols on the left? Should I only be going after the green ones? Do the others mean I can't join? I want to find servers where there is actually a serious game going on, where I can play a part such as fly troops around.

Lots of folks are now going to reply to this thread to try and entice you onto their server.

My advice to you is set yourself up with voice comms (get a microphone if you dont already have one)

1) Get teamspeak installed (free voice comms app, you will need it if you intend playing arma a lot)

also set up your voip keys and learn how to use them

2) Look through the server browser and get used to the filters in there

3) Filter by "Mission" (This will give you an idea of the different type of missions the various servers are running)

  • Altis Life: RPG mission where you play a role like a police officer or a robber or some shop keeper (Its very popular, god knows why, but it is)
  • Wasteland: A survival mission, like DayZ without zombies
  • Invade & Annex: Coop mission designed for public servers
  • Patrol Ops: coop mission designed for public servers ( In my opinion the best public play Coop mission out there)
  • Resistance: Coop mission designed for public servers
  • BECTI pvp or coop

These are some of the mainstream mission, there are more, you will see this from the filter

You will also see some missions listed where there may only be 1 or 2 servers running them. These are more custom missions made for a certain community

Once you have an idea of the sort of mission you want to play then you can start selecting a server to play on

4) Find one thats fairly well populated (This is going to be down to your timezone) with a ping no more than about 150-200ms

5) look for one of these servers with either a green or yellow icon

  • Green icon you will have no issues joining
  • Yellow icon, you may or may not need addons for (Left click on that server and look at the bottom right window, this will list expansions (Addons that may be required)
Dont bother to even try to connect to any red icon servers, you wont be able too, or any with a key in, as these will be locked or passworded

When you have selected a server then join

Listen to the comms on voip and watch the chat channel, this will give you an indication as to how well the server is run

Say hello to the group leader in Green group chat and ask for their teamspeak details (Join their teamspeak, you will get a lot more help and respect if you do that)

Take an infantry role initially, follow the group leader and do as they ask.

If your not sure, ask.

Play for about 30 minutes to get an idea what their organisation and command and control is like.

if its bad, move on to another server

Most important thing is

  • Introduce yourself to the group leader
  • Follow the group leader wherever he goes
  • Ask before you get into a vehicle
  • Get on their teamspeak server

If you dont, you will end up playing solo, have no idea what is going on and get the complete wrong picture of what ArmA gaming can be like and likelyb get kicked from any organised server, which is the last thing you want to happen

Learn the game mechanics in single player first

The following is an old guide for ARMA 2 gaming. its outdated now but may have some snippets in that will help you

Good luck and welcome to ArmA

Wow, that's fantastic - thank you so much! It really helps. Trouble thus far has been trying to find populated servers. I have played through the showcase missions and some firing ranges, and am now going through the campaign. Finally getting used to the feel, and constantly adjusting controls to suit as I go. Dslyecxi's guide's have been invaluable, and I'll check out Zeus too! Looking forward to some serious gaming.

Excellent post by Terox, i would also advise you to use 'play with six' it makes finding servers and installing mods a lot easier..

What I do is filter by ping and gametype. Ping less than 300, Coop gametype, has at least 1 player on server and is not passworded.

The colors to the left tells you if you can connect to the server or not. Red = Can't connect, wrong version of Arma 3 or mods not allowed, yellow = maybe works for you, green = all good to go, get in.

If you have mods, disable them. This way you can join most servers.

Excellent. Pity some mods are not compatible, especially since many of them ought to only be client side. The biggest one I have a problem with actually is JSRS - my favourite. I will definitely check out play with six, thanks.

Hey Tasev, adding to terox's post, there are a bunch of crazy improvisation mcc missions on a server "Hridaysabz" (Yes, I host it.) If you like that kind of stuff jump on by filtering host to hridaysabz.

What i am having an issue with is where a person can advertise servers... And also, sorry to high jack thread but i cant seem to create new threads so... :P

Once you post 2 or 3 responses, then you can post your own threads. Same thing for me.
