Ukraine General

Recommended Posts

If rebel resistance in Donetsk and Luhansk don't fall apart from the inside out, the sieges will result in a Sarajevo-live humanitarian catastrophe. They could drag out indefinitely, while Ukraine's economic situation gets worse (http://www.brookings.edu/research/articles/2014/05/21-ukraine-prize-russia-west-ukraine-gaddy-ickes). Just as Putin exacted a price for Yanukovich's fall, he will exact a price for the destruction of Novorossiya, so as not to be seen as the loser. I can't imagine Moscow sitting on its hands for weeks, while all the news reports show two cities of this size under bombardment, with no power or water. There has to be some sort of escalation, or Putin's popularity is finished, and his challengers will be even worse.

Remember that American soldier in Iraq who posted a photo with a geolocator tag, allowing Iraqi militants to shell the location and destroy several F-22 Raptors?

Apaches, not F-22s. Somewhat doubt they'd have sent F-22s there between '06-'08, when that thing happened, for several reasons.

( NY Times ) Separatist Cadre Hopes for a Reprise in Ukraine

DONETSK, Ukraine — Early in the separatist struggle for eastern Ukraine, a leading Russian nationalist, Aleksandr G. Dugin, painted a glowing portrait of what the newly captured territories, referred to in Russia as Novorossiya, would become.

The land will be “a holy place for a renaissance of Russian culture, Russian spirit and Russian identity,†he told followers in Moscow. The residents will be “absolutely different people — brave, clever and able to fight for their freedom.â€

Today, that dream seems distant, as the Ukrainian Army closes in on Donetsk, the separatist capital, having claimed on Saturday to surround the city. Shelling by Ukrainian troops killed six people in Donetsk over the weekend and set fires in outlying districts, while the forces probed the city’s outer defenses. Shops and restaurants are closed, and the streets all but deserted. Yet the pro-Russia leadership is pressing ahead with a sweeping goal of establishing a lasting government here.

For that, they have turned to a cadre of bureaucrats who have made their way into Donetsk from Transnistria, a breakaway territory of Moldova that is another unrecognized, pro-Russia region. They are led by Vladimir Antyufeyev, who was a longtime security chief there, and who in July was appointed deputy prime minister of the main rebel group here, the Donetsk People’s Republic.

According to the Rostov Region’s border guard spokesman Vasily Malaev, a total of 438 soldiers, including 164 Ukrainian border guards, have been allowed into Russia on Sunday night.
On Sunday, the Russian border guards reported of 12 Ukrainian soldiers seeking refuge in Russia. And in late July 41 Ukrainian troops fledto Russia to escape fighting in eastern Ukraine. They are now being prosecuted in Ukraine for deserting in the heat of battle.

The flow of deserters from the ranks of Ukrainian Army and National Guard seems to be increasing amid the escalating violence in Donets and Lugansk Regions, where Kiev is fighting against armed anti-government militias.

The Ukrainian troops, while far superior to the militia in terms of heavy weapons, suffer from poor logistics. Many soldiers complain about lacking even basic supplies like food and water on the frontline. The situation is aggravated by cases of apparent negligence from the command, with units being supplied with faulty equipment, coming under friendly fire and simply left behind while retreating from militia counter-attacks.

(Al Jazeera) Hundreds of Ukraine troops cross into Russia

(BBC) Siberian autonomy web page shut down

It calls for a march in Novosibirsk, Siberia's informal capital, on 17 August, the TJournal media website reports. Nearly 2,000 people have agreed to join the march so far.
But MP Nikolai Valuyev, loyal to President Vladimir Putin, dubbed the march the "first attempt of global efforts to promote separatism in Russia".

Those troops that ran away to Russia were from the endangered salient along the southern border, meaning that the Lugansk portion of the rebels' territory may now have unimpeded access to Russia.

It's fake indeed but just damn funny mockery of those jihadist clips.

What are you on about? The SVDK was introduced 2006 into the russian army and was never exported anywhere.

Edit:

On a second look it looks more like an SVDM, which is a russian weapon as well.

( International Business Times ) Russia Sanctions: Germany, Others Suggest EU Buy Out French Warships Contract From Russia

The idea that the European Union should acquire two French helicopter-carrying assault ships, rather than let France deliver the warships already sold to Russia, is becoming a stronger possibility as Western nations have banned future arms sales to Russia and restricted business with its energy and financial sectors, analysts said.

It's incredible to see in the video how much butt-hurt the pro-russians are. Get over it, it was just a cold war.

At 2:10 a celebration to the Soviet Union.

At 2:55 and on, happy drunk and friendly pro russian, threatens a guy.

LOLWUT?:D What SVDK are you talking about if that dude clearly said "SVD" (I understand Ukrainian-accented speech clearly)? And I have to upset you but SVD with plastic furniture is produced since late 90's for both military and civil market (civil one called Tigr carbine and... tadaam sold in Ukraine).

UNHCR: 730,000 flee Ukraine for Russia

More than 700,000 people have left Ukraine for Russia during the country’s four months of conflict. In addition, 117,000 people have become displaced within Ukraine, according to the UN’s refugee agency.
A week of combat in the separatists' second-largest bastion, Luhansk, has put an end to municipal rubbish collection and, more importantly, left 250,000 people without water, electricity, internet or telephone, according to local authorities.
Human Rights Watch reports that separatists have targeted medical workers. In a statement Tuesday, HRW reported that separatists had "threatened medical staff, stolen and destroyed medical equipment and hospital furniture, and compromised the ability of civilian patients to receive treatment."

Such irony in two consecutive compound sentences. Maybe you deserve a shame for being such dimwitted nationalist coward redneck.

Please, go ahead and justify this to prove my point.

(UNHCR) UNHCR urges Ukraine to establish central registration system as internal displacement tops 117,000

"In the past seven days more than 6,200 people have been forced from their homes," UNHCR's Vincent Cochetel told journalists in Geneva. As of August 1, an estimated 168,000 people have crossed into Russia so far this year.
According to local authorities, some 4,000 people have returned from the Kharkiv region to Slavyansk and Kramatorsk during the last week. Some 20,000 people have reportedly returned to Slavyansk since July 5.
A larger number of Ukrainians are arriving and staying in Russia under the visa-free regime. The Russian authorities estimate that around 730,000 Ukrainians, including the 168,000 seen by the Federal Migration Service, have arrived since the beginning of the year under this programme.

Please refrain from open flaming. Keep it on the same level as arms transfers and cross-border shelling in support of the separatists: with your intentions and overall activities obvious, but with a lack of incontrovertible evidence so you can deny everything with a smirk.

I could of course start arguing that the civilian Tigr only has a 20 inch barrel, but that would once again end in an endless cycle.

The hypocrisy is indeed funny, by the way.
