Ukraine General

The way that armoured column was destroyed required serious firepower. How can seperatists do that kind of damage? If the seperatists were responsible for that where did they get the resources and training for that?

WARNING, VERY VIOLENT IMAGES!!!!!

(BBC) Kendall: Why Ukraine truce works for both sides

There's no doubt Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's options were limited.

If he was hoping for a swift campaign to crush the rebels in the east so he could get on with the business of pulling Ukraine out of its economic mess, then in the last two weeks he must have realised he would not be allowed to.

The fact is, Mr Putin had ample chance to take over eastern Ukraine if he had wanted. But it is not clear what advantage taking over the territory would bring him.

It is poor, many of its industries are loss-making, the local population is traumatised and divided. And it would be a messy bloody fight, involving large number of Russian troops, and who knows how many Russian casualties.

According to the pro-Russians:

( RIA Novosti ) Kiev Forces Continue Shelling Despite Ceasefire: Donetsk Militia

Ukrainian special forces continued shelling towns and militia positions in the Donetsk region late Friday despite the ceasefire established hours before, the militia forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) said Saturday.

This is an interesting article: On the road of death after the Battle for Ilovaysk

I feel like they're implying that those battalions may have been wiped out or at least messed up pretty good/bad.

there is some german TV video about it, 1-2 vehices out of dozen (or two dozens) made it out including the jeep with cameraman...

the separatists were waiting on the escape route with tanks and massacred them

( The Guardian ) Russia warns of reaction to fresh EU economic sanctions

EU says measures could be suspended if Russian troops quit east Ukraine, but Moscow hits out at 'support to party of war in Kiev'

( Al Jazeera ) Blame traded over Ukraine truce 'violations'

A ceasefire between government forces and pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine's east appeared to be largely holding despite accusations by both sides of minor violations of the truce.

A Ukrainian defence official accused rebels in Donetsk of a "series of provocations" after the truce went into effect at 15:00 GMT on Friday.

"They fired on our anti-terrorism units on 28 occasions, with 10 of those coming after the ceasefire," National Security and Defence Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko told reporters on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the separatists accused Kiev's forces of breaking the ceasefire just hours after it was agreed and vowed to pursue their independence drive in the east.

That ceasefire looks so promising

Casualties of Ukrainian Armed Forces

There is a webpage with a list of Battalions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who did take part in the fights against the seperatists. The list shows volunteer battalions but also regular forces.

The sources of the data are linked aswell.

Of course this does not mean that these datas are correct, which is highly likely the case.

@Tonic

better delete the image, someone before got an infraction since he did post a joke video

That numbers don't add up at all.

I mean according to that link the Ukrainian Army has lost thousands of men and hundreds of armored vehicles. Having in mind that the official data in both sides is that there have been a few more than 2500 causalities ( including civilians and combatants of both sides... ).

So basically what it's written there it's just fantasy.

Not to talk about the amount of vehicles destroyed. That look like a big battle of WW2 more than a counter insurgency operation. Even if the Russian Army has acted directly, that data is hard to believe.

If that is true or Ukraine had thousands of armored vehicles, more than almost any other country in Europe, I where have they come from

Chechens fighting in the East Ukraine

War-ready european Chechens taking part in clashes in revenge.

Inquiries of the "Presse" show that Chechens taking part in the war in East Ukraine on the ukrainian side. Including Chechens with asylum status or Austrian citizenship.

Authorities in Austria dont know about fighter exports but are aware that there is a stream of Chechens from other European Countries into the Ukraine and a huge interest in the general Chechen community exists. Wheras chechens from Austria are only a tiny part, especially a higher influx from Denkmark is noticeable where the former Brigade General Isa Munajew did organize an International Battalion. Already in June this year, around 300 Chechen fighters did join.

Allegedly informations tell, that these are not religious fanatics - (Islamists).

The motive is simple: Revenge on Putin and blood feud on Kadyrow men. Among the ukrainian seperatists there are also Kadyrow fighers located.

Ukraine is looking for Specialists

It is very well known by intelligence agencies that the Ukraine is looking for specialists. A paper from german intelligence services show, that the pro-ukrainian Asow-Battalion financed by an ukrainian Oligarch is trained locally by "instructor from Sweden, France, Germany and aswell from Russia". Ex-National Guard Chef Shamajew assumes that most of the embattled fighters reach the Ukraine by crossing the boarders illegal.

What counts are the references if you want to look into details, they did list it and you need to be able to read Cyrillic, I cant. Its always the question if the reports or press releases are true and reputeable. But in general the list schould be looked at with caution like I said and you both write about.

---------------------------

But I do read in the main media that the Ukrainian Forces had really heavy losses.

I think it was on vice news, cant remember, where I did watch a video where almost 70 vehicles ( a whole freaking convoy) got totally destroyed...crazy. Probably with artillery or GRAD rocket strikes, very precise.

(edit: On the Road of Death - Illovaysk it is said at least (vice news) and check out the new vice news video from 6h september today, he shows streets which are littered with destroyed vehicles.)

Hopefully this cease fire leads to peace, the bloodshed is too high and they should stop already these insane and horrible fights.

You can always use Google translate, and if you don't trust that system learn the Cyrillic Alphabet ( which is not excessively difficult, I did in a week ) and with a Russian dictionary you can get the general idea.

But the sources from those reports doesn't seem much faithful.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian Army has indeed suffered heavy loses for what it should be a counter-insurgency operation ( that is not, you just have to check that the pro-Russians magically have created out of the blue an army with better equipment than a lot of countries in Europe... ).

But according to the data from your link, the numbers are close to the main WW2 battles, which is practically non-sense. As it would mean that the Ukrainian Army has been wiped out. If it's so... from where are the vehicles from the independence parade a couple weeks ago?

That would only make sense if there was a full fledged invasion of Ukraine by Russia or the US, and that hasn't happened ( yet ).

Very depressing new Vice News video. It's very graphic, so I'm not posting it.

Isn't there a ceasefire or did I miss something?

BBC - Shelling near Mariupol threatens tense truce

There were no reports of major fighting in the east for the first 24 hours, but by Saturday evening the BBC's Fergal Keane tweeted from Mariupol that shelling had resumed.

There were explosions on the eastern fringes of the city close to government checkpoints, he said.

There were flashes along the horizon and duels between artillery on both sides.

Our correspondent says it is too early to say what impact this will have on the ceasefire across the eastern region, but it doesn't bode well.
