If rebel resistance in Donetsk and Luhansk don't fall apart from the inside out, the sieges will result in a Sarajevo-live humanitarian catastrophe. They could drag out indefinitely, while Ukraine's economic situation gets worse (http://www.brookings.edu/research/articles/2014/05/21-ukraine-prize-russia-west-ukraine-gaddy-ickes). Just as Putin exacted a price for Yanukovich's fall, he will exact a price for the destruction of Novorossiya, so as not to be seen as the loser. I can't imagine Moscow sitting on its hands for weeks, while all the news reports show two cities of this size under bombardment, with no power or water. There has to be some sort of escalation, or Putin's popularity is finished, and his challengers will be even worse.

DONETSK, Ukraine — Early in the separatist struggle for eastern Ukraine, a leading Russian nationalist, Aleksandr G. Dugin, painted a glowing portrait of what the newly captured territories, referred to in Russia as Novorossiya, would become.

The land will be “a holy place for a renaissance of Russian culture, Russian spirit and Russian identity,†he told followers in Moscow. The residents will be “absolutely different people — brave, clever and able to fight for their freedom.â€

Today, that dream seems distant, as the Ukrainian Army closes in on Donetsk, the separatist capital, having claimed on Saturday to surround the city. Shelling by Ukrainian troops killed six people in Donetsk over the weekend and set fires in outlying districts, while the forces probed the city’s outer defenses. Shops and restaurants are closed, and the streets all but deserted. Yet the pro-Russia leadership is pressing ahead with a sweeping goal of establishing a lasting government here.

For that, they have turned to a cadre of bureaucrats who have made their way into Donetsk from Transnistria, a breakaway territory of Moldova that is another unrecognized, pro-Russia region. They are led by Vladimir Antyufeyev, who was a longtime security chief there, and who in July was appointed deputy prime minister of the main rebel group here, the Donetsk People’s Republic.

According to the Rostov Region’s border guard spokesman Vasily Malaev, a total of 438 soldiers, including 164 Ukrainian border guards, have been allowed into Russia on Sunday night.

On Sunday, the Russian border guards reported of 12 Ukrainian soldiers seeking refuge in Russia. And in late July 41 Ukrainian troops fledto Russia to escape fighting in eastern Ukraine. They are now being prosecuted in Ukraine for deserting in the heat of battle.

The flow of deserters from the ranks of Ukrainian Army and National Guard seems to be increasing amid the escalating violence in Donets and Lugansk Regions, where Kiev is fighting against armed anti-government militias.

The Ukrainian troops, while far superior to the militia in terms of heavy weapons, suffer from poor logistics. Many soldiers complain about lacking even basic supplies like food and water on the frontline. The situation is aggravated by cases of apparent negligence from the command, with units being supplied with faulty equipment, coming under friendly fire and simply left behind while retreating from militia counter-attacks.

What are you on about? The SVDK was introduced 2006 into the russian army and was never exported anywhere.

"In the past seven days more than 6,200 people have been forced from their homes," UNHCR's Vincent Cochetel told journalists in Geneva. As of August 1, an estimated 168,000 people have crossed into Russia so far this year.

According to local authorities, some 4,000 people have returned from the Kharkiv region to Slavyansk and Kramatorsk during the last week. Some 20,000 people have reportedly returned to Slavyansk since July 5.

A larger number of Ukrainians are arriving and staying in Russia under the visa-free regime. The Russian authorities estimate that around 730,000 Ukrainians, including the 168,000 seen by the Federal Migration Service, have arrived since the beginning of the year under this programme.

I could of course start arguing that the civilian Tigr only has a 20 inch barrel, but that would once again end in an endless cycle.
