Othin 0 Posted August 29, 2002 I don't think NASA is really anything special. They've continually pissed away any chances they've had to really make a difference in Science and exploration. Most Americans see the NASA of today as either a Taxi or a black hole that money disapears down. The X33 tanked, and I don't think there is currently a replacement in the works. Their efforts at exploring the solar system have been admirable, but their credibility was hurt with the numeric misjudgement of the Mars explorer. The ISS is more a political maneuver then an outpost in space in my opinion. I don't think a "space race" between Europe and the United States would really do any good. I think the future of space lies in privitation. Lets leave all this nationalism back on Earth. Of course if Europeans want a space shuttle, you can always do like the Russians and copy ours. Do a google search for the Buran space shuttle, the similarities are amazing. That is just me being facetious though, as the shuttle design is aging and expensive to maintain. moerty 0 Posted August 29, 2002 i think most of our space exploration to date has been useless media stunts. if we (humans) were truly serious about space we would be experimenting on things that would advance our infrastructure out there, such as metallurgy, foundries and the posibillities of unmanned factories, rock crushers etc.. all based in space. until this type of research becomes common place in say, space stations, any talk of space is just a fantasy, ungrounded in reality. Right now companies have to go through a government to get their satelites or equipment into space. If you had private companies doing it, the prices would come down and you would start seeing alot more innovation on the "space ships" themselves as people try to find ways to do it cheaper and better. The cutting out of burecracy will be the biggest boon to the expansion of private companies into space.

Warin 0 Posted August 29, 2002 Commercialization of space is needed far more than nationalistic competition. What a monumental waste it would be to duplicate efforts in some sort of competition! Throw billions of dollars in development instead of building an already proven (if somewhat aging) platform. Or better yet, combine efforts with NASA to develop a new launch platform. The X-33 showed a lot of promise before the boneheads in the US government killed it in a total bout of shortsightedness. Mankind needs to get its act together and work together!
