[WIP] VTOL Tiltrotor Aircrafts

Recommended Posts

I think they're looking at something like this, which I found in an issue of Popular Science I was reading in the lobby of the hospital the other day:

http://i.imgur.com/o4nUc4I.jpg

Anyways, I like to see such an ambitious project. I love the stealth aspect of these tiltrotors, too. It makes them fit in with vanilla assets better.

Please make this happen. I want to go to there. Sorry I can't offer any help, as I am not technically skilled at all, but you have my support!

especially if you use my idea of making another model of an actual V-280 and make the other thing the tiltrotor on the picture that looks like a halo reach falcon

This looks really cool dude!! I love how you take some creative freedom but still ground it in reality with actual prototypes. Good luck and keep up the good work :D!!

Edit: And perhaps this could also help you along: http://endwar.wikia.com/wiki/V-25_Goshawk

http://endwar.wikia.com/wiki/V-120_Valkyrie

I'v always thought that the EndWar units were pretty realistic and well thought out.

As for the OPFOR equivilant: http://endwar.wikia.com/wiki/Mi-55_Locust

http://endwar.wikia.com/wiki/Mi-80_Tarantula

Or: http://endwar.wikia.com/wiki/EC_220_Gadfly

First of all sorry for the lack of updates, as I said at the beginning, I am not enough skilled to finish this mod alone and in addition I've been quite busy lately, so I haven't been able to do anything else.

I already thought about the CSAT equivalents, but thanks for the suggestions :) :

NATO: AHV-284 Courage - CSAT: I would use the Mil-mi 62K as a concept to do the tiltrotor attack aircraft: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3766/12880804305_c674b22c8f_o.jpg then I would place doors for infantry at the sides too: http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/360/1/2/wip_osprey_flying_pigs_by_bewarethebob-d5p8rbh.jpg engines http://thexhs.deviantart.com/art/XHA-215-215307522

NATO: V-25 Phantom Osprey - CSAT: I would use some Russian helicopter references too http://rewalls.com/images/201106/reWalls.com_37889.jpg , plus http://thexhs.deviantart.com/art/SCA-214-215406054 and http://www.desura.com/mods/cnc3-red-zone-europe/images/wc-v-25-dragonfly#gallerylist

NATO: V-45 Pelican - CSAT: I would use the Chinese Blue whale tiltrotor concept: http://images.china.cn/attachement/jpg/site1007/20130905/001fd04cf34a13923eff21.jpg plus http://thexhs.deviantart.com/art/XHC-342-323088066

and unlike NATO, these wouldn't have a stealthy design.

For the tiltrotor drone I could use this as a concept:

http://dna-1.deviantart.com/art/Wing-Drone-360731879

something I have noticed is that the new futuristic A10 (A-164 Wipeout) that ha sbeen recently released is extremely similar to this vehicle addon mod:

http://www.armaholic.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=17185

it is possible that the devs were inspired by it, I would be really happy if the same happened with mines.

If you can do this, and do it right. I think you might even have a shot for the Make Arma Not War contest ;)

heres the concept Tiltrotor attack vehicle (which looks like a falcon from HALO):http://i.imgur.com/o4nUc4I.jpg(yes this is the same picture of the one theevancat posted)

I think people complaining about the 'future' setting might finally stop if we end up flying around in that beautiful creation.

Today I had some free time, so I decided to make this:

CSAT:

Piranha (Mi 48 kajman + http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3716/12880920043_ac88254d02_m.jpg)

piranha_class_tiltrotor.jpg

Sea lion (2 wing tiltrotor aircraft + weapon underside, similar to the v 22 osprey)

tiltrotor_orca.jpg

Whale (V-44 QTR concept + Chinese blue whale concept)

http://img92.exs.cx/img92/3766/spivey1page219lz.jpg http://www.china-defense-mashup.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/blue-whale.jpg

CSAT_whale.jpg

Killer Whale Gunship variant. 1 x GAU-12/U 25 mm, 1 x Bofors 40 mm , 1 x 120 mm Mortar

I decided to make a similar quad tiltrotor for CSAT too, but changing it a bit from the NATO one. Same for the other tiltrotors.

Those models look promesing. What kind of design are you aiming for? Are they gonna be stealth inspired like the new A-164 Wipeout, inspired by the EndWar units? Or more a traditional curved design like the Osprey? Regardless, keep it up!

All NATO aircrafts have a stealthy design, but CSAT does not, so NATO ones are stealthy, and CSAT ones are more curved. I'm trying to make designs that fit for each faction.

It's time for firepower:

Ey nightovizard, small suggestions based on the US Army's Future Vertical Lift (FVL)/JOINT MULTIROLE and US ARMY JOINT HEAVY LIFT(JHL) / JOINT FUTURE THEATER LIFT:

In the heavy lift area there a prototype

nasa-future-search-n-rescue_soterion_02.jpg

It´s from the Virginia Tech, has two tiltrotor and two propulsion engines for cruise speed. It´s amphibious. Here the final report in pdf.

Those two propulsion engine lookalike a OPFOR long range plane, reminds me the URSS style.

Now for BLUFOR, the QTR has an issue with the scale-up conversion of the quad tiltrotor, so there is an alternative, the CTR (Conventional Til Rotor);

f20169dc-f6b6-4150-b112-529f52413cb2.Large.jpg

In a general note, China with the z20 is coping the blackhawk (the attack helicopter WZ-10 Fierce Thunderbolt and WZ-19 Black Tornado looks too familiar to me) and Iran has made that path before, what a mean its that the Urss style it´s not gone yet (Any kamov, mil or kazan style).

For multiproporse the bells v-280 looks great.

Picture 1

Picture 2

Picture 3

Picture 4

The sensors and avionics in AgustaWestland AW609 looks nice.

For stealth tecnology the Sikorsky X2 Raider and the Stealthhawk are good reference.

In other hand, if you want contrast of design, the hexplane is your type, if a six rotor prototype is any kind of type.

FVL 1

FVL 2

The Oliver Vtol site it´s worth to see.

I hope it helps. The only real suggestion I have is the back landing gear of the OPFOR planes, why not add those to the back engines?

Can I make a suggestion? I really like the gunship concept. But I think (for the sake of an authentic futuristic gunship) you should ditch the 120mm. Why? Well because modern day real gunships like the new AC-130W (Whiskey), have done so to. They are now using guided griffin missles wich are a lot more accurate and deadly.

And with the addition of new modernized HE ammo for the 40mm. They have not really lost to capability to take out small structures.

Nice feedback, I will take that into consideration :)

@mrnchvs wow that's a lot of info and feedback.

Virginia Tech tiltrotor looks interesting, but is designed for emergencies and rescue missions, gotta agree that the design is similar to soviet aircrafts. The amphibious feature give me some nice ideas though:

3:06

I would be possible to land aircrafts in water in Arma 3?

http://combatreform.org/chinookswimming.jpg

Talking about soviet aircrafts, Yeah actually I used Russian aircraft as reference for the CSAT:

Piranha (Mi 48 kajman + http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3716/12880920043_ac88254d02_m.jpg)

piranha_class_tiltrotor.jpg

as you can see I used the ingame Mi 48 kajman, and another Russian aircraft concept as reference.

I used the V-280 valor concept and other concepts as reference for the NATO one:

AHV-284 Courage ( Attack helicopter + Chopper + VTOL + ''Stealth'' similar to the AH-80 Blackfoot/UH-80 Ghost hawk)

http://www.photosheaf.com/pics/t/pp59541.jpg

v-280_valor_spectre5.jpg

As you can see I decided to add a more ''stealthy'' cockpit and chassis to it, similar to the other Arma 3 NATO helicopters, so it perfectly fits in there. I also changed the wings design to the red circled tiltrotor concept from the second image.

as for the heavy transports, I'm going to keep them as QTR, maybe the CTR could be a more efficient solution at the moment, but I would like to see the QTR making it in an alternative reality on Arma 3. Just like the Comanche, in real life the project failed, but in Arma 3 it is the main NATO attack helicopter.

thank you for this and all the other feedback.

one last thing:

I hope it helps. The only real suggestion I have is the back landing gear of the OPFOR planes, why not add those to the back engines?

what do you exactly mean? to pu the wheels on the engines just like here?:

vtoluav1.jpg

3 reasons why I wouldn't do that:

1. where would they retract into? that should be the engine exhaust duct.

2. it adds unneeded stress to the motors and joints of the engines

3. it limits the aircrafts stable landing capabilities to VTOL only, vs the MV22 where it can land like a conventional aircraft with the rotors tilted up at 45 degrees or so

The reason why that vehicle has the landing gear on the engines, is because it is a real life aircraft:

http://www.helicopterpage.com/images/eagle%20eye.jpg

As it is rather small, it can be allowed to be designed that way.

Great, thanks for the answer.

Yeah it´s possible to make a amphibious plane. Two examples in arma 3; The Cessna from [APS]GNAT (Video Here, BISFORUM here) and the Ekranoplane-Orlyonok (Thread Here).

Gnat make a script for that, if ask he can advice you.

Great research and design. Cheers.

Thank you very much :) I appreciate the kind words.

something I have recently thought are the vehicle names:

NATO - CSAT

V-25 Phantom Osprey - ZY-28 Sea Lion

V-45 Pelican - ZY-50 Whale

AV-45 Spectre Pelican - ZYO-50 Killer Whale

AHV-284 Courage - ZYPO-201 Piranha

HV-911 Eagle Eye - KZ-73 Hawk Eye

But as in vanilla Arma 3, I think Iranian/Persian words would fit more for the CSAT ones, any suggestions?

Found:

Saeqeh (thunderbolt) , Azarakhsh (lightning) , Shafaq (Twilight) , Qaher (Omnipotent) , Dorna (Crane) , Tazarv (Pheasant) , Fajr (Dawn) , Simorgh , Toufan (Typhoon) , Shahed (witness), Bavar (Belief) , Ababil (Swallow) , mohajer (migrant) , etc...

I wanted it to have that name, but Orca is already used by an Arma 3 aircraft:

http://armedassault.wikia.com/wiki/PO-30_Orca

By the way I did some changes to the tiltrotor gunships:

vtol_gunships_update.jpg

AHV-284 Courage - ZYPO-201 Piranha

Basically I changed the tail and added rocket pods.

Thank you :D The problem is that my modeling skills are pretty basic, I'm used to make stuff for RTS games (Low poly models), but for Arma 3 they need to have more quality: Details, interiors, etc... I hope you could help me with that, your tank addon is awesome!

That V-25 looks really cool. Hopefully it doesn't rain hydraulic fluid on us grunts in the back like the current Osprey. ;) Nice work!

Decided to try to start the interior of the Phantom Osprey, I added a ramp and seats on it, as I said in other posts, very low poly and low detailed.

Not sure what I should do with the cockpit though.

Are the pilots sitting in tandem or next to each other (guessing there are two)?

Id take a closer look at the "blackfoot"(pilot in front) or the apache or ghosthawk.

"Glascockpit" is the way to go I guess.

Btw. please think about a FLIR or targeting pod (blackfoot/apache) or take a look at the osprey.

The pilots of these planes seem very dependent on that equipment when it comes to landings (brownout)

V-25 Phantom osprey would be very similar to the V-22 Osprey, only that the cockpit has a stealth design outside, you can see the screenshots on the first page.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/US_Navy_040109-N-0000T-001_Marine_Lt._Col._Kevin_Gross,_V-22_Osprey_Integrated_Test_Team%5Ersquo,s_Government_Flight_Test_Director,_seated_left,_and_Marine_Maj._Gen._Jim_Amos,_Commanding_General_3rd_Marine_Air_Wing,_pose_for_a_ph.jpg

Then the V-44 and AV-44 cockpit would be similar to the Ac 130 c 130 cockpit. And then the other 2 would be like the Comanche cockpit and the mi-48 kajman cockpit.
