meatball 25 Posted September 17, 2013 A handful of friends and I play A3 pretty frequently with our own missions and I'm thinking of putting together a dedicated server for our use. Wouldn't need to be anything crazy and would at most have 8-10 people on it, but could easily have a few hundred AI running as well. Since I have the best ISP speeds of the group (30 Mb Down/5 Mb Up) I've been hosting locally on my machine without too much of an issue (Core i5-3570K Oc'd to 4 Ghz), but would rather offload the server duties to a separate box. I have an old Dell Optiplex box sitting here with a Core 2 Duo e6600 (2.4 Ghz) and 4 GB of RAM in it. Think that'd be up to snuff to handle some light Dedicated server duties? griffz 1 Posted September 17, 2013 i think it would be okay, but you need to have a light hand with battlescale. bandwith need / player depends directly of the mission, but you can aim 600kbps/player to be comfortable.
meatball 25 Posted September 17, 2013 When you say battlescale, I assume you mean the overall area of the battle? For the most of our missions with heavy AI, we've been sticking with Stratis, so I think we're alright. I also have made most of the missions to keep the action mostly centered around the players. I take it core speed is more important than multicores? I know there's some relatively cheap AMD APU's that get 3.5 Ghz+ that I could probably build a server on the cheap with. griffz 1 Posted September 17, 2013 (edited) the CPU and bandwith bottleneck has more to do with number of Ai units and number of players.a cti loaded with AI use up to 900kpbs / player. that lets you host a such game with 6 or 7 player MAX. a less dense game will be okay with 10 player i think.
