LETS RAISE THE CEILING... Literaly

Recommended Posts

Ok, something really hit a soft spot on me, and that would be the Flight ceiling that Bohemia decided to add in Arma 3. Why.

Look, I honestly don't want this to feel like Battlefield 3, even though i love Battlefield for what it is (not comparing here), the freedom and realism of flight in the Arma series is something i die for. I really do think the BI should get rid of it. The Ceiling is set over 3000 feet. In real like, even WW2 aircraft's can fly at an altitude of 30,000 60,000 feet. I think they need to improve on the immersion of flight rather than implementing restrictions. Though, there is something else they can do. In real life, the higher you go, the less matter of air you have to react on a physical surface of an aircraft, thus making it harder to pull of maneuvers. I think they need to make it just like that, and maybe have it realistically where you cant really fly too well over an altitude like 20,000 or something. They also don't have that second layer of clouds that forms at highers altitudes, but that's ok for now. Just get rid of the Altitude restriction. It kills.

There is no "ceiling" it's a value in each aircrafts config which can differ greatly.

But I definelty want to fly higher and actually through the new volumetric clouds we have.

So your telling me, that i can change how high one aircraft can go? Via, config?

You don't even need to touch the config, you can do it via a command, flyInHeight

More commonly known as an aircrafts operational ceiling.

Never had any problem flying above the clouds with addon aircraft from A2.

Yeah it's definatly depends on performance of the a/c being flown. Try a F35 or Av8b in ArmA2 an see F35 can easily get up over 10k Av8b is a lil lower. RU aircraft like SU25 even lower though I think SU33 is equal to AV8b air ceiling. heck even the C130 can get up there as we tried it once an all bailed out an then enjoyed the view for 20-30 mins it took for us to finally reach the ground in a parachute 8)-

I'm reasonably sure these are the config values that control maximum altitude of aircraft:

altFullForce = 2000;

altNoForce = 6000;

Source: http://browser.six-projects.net/configclasses/CfgVehicles%3EAir/config?version=70

If I'm correct, that's linked to the altitude/height at which the engines will still have full power, and the power available will slowly decrease as you approach the altNoForce point. Unless you've got viewdistance set to a high value, I don't see having a much higher ceiling being any use when aircraft are designed to be supporting the infantry focus of the game.

Back in our custom OFP CTI missions on OGN we had a F-15 and Su-27, we also had mobile AA and the only way to avoid them was to fly really high out of range or really low using terrain cover. Of course flying high in OFP/ArmA you cant see anything so had to use map or heading to know where you were and wanted to go, we often had people on the ground to give pilots AA positions and combined the two to support each other, I even did a few B-52 escort missions back then also to bomb the enemy base hehe

Actually here's a pic, miss the OFP CTI games we had!

Yea, modern air to air combat would look like stuff out of Super Strike Eagle on the SNES with the draw distances that Arma has.

Well that is where your wrong, to a certain extent. I have had times in Arma 2, flying over 4000 feet to stay out of a Tunguska's Range in Takistani life. Did it for hours, and never died ounce, and saved countless lives of my team. If a pilot is un able to fly at altitudes his aircraft is able to achieve, not only is it a set back for the pilot, but a set back on effectiveness and survivability when it comes to being available to his ground forces, as apposed to being a pile of burned metal behind enemy lines. Then again when it comes to true CAS, we will have to wait till BI fixes the flare system to single flare mode, as you will run out of flares in just seconds, leaving you COMPLETELY defenseless against AA.
