divers are useless in most scenarios

Recommended Posts

nope of course :D

they are not able to switch from armor piercing rounds when they use tanks or choppers as well and they are not able to switch to the proper ammo while using a rifle. AI in arma series is so primitive.

I totally disagree witcha: I think ArmA AI is pretty good.

In all other game, AI is just scripted, dumb enough to hide behind something with their head just over it - so that the player CAN shoot them etc...

Moreover, in many games there is infinite AI respawn to create a fake difficulty level - which is not in ArmA.

Any ay, back to topic, the divers ARE NOT useless IMO - we CAN create great realistic scénarios with them.

take down oil rigs, how you going to get there? Hostage rescue on a boat? how are you going to get to the ladder on the back? Parachute into the water swim to an objective, Boat in the harbor needs to be disabled? swim under it mine the propeller. Plenty of use for diving. To bad we dont have cruise ships so we can do under-ways

Also, as an interesting anecdote, No Easy Day recounts just such a "Parachute into the water swim to an objective", albeit it was a jump from a C-17 into the Indian Ocean with "four gray boats" nearby to get the SEALs and three non-SEAL "essential support personnel" (including a communications specialist for whom it was actually his very first jump!) over to the USS Boxer (LHD-4); it would be a small team of SEALs who went from there to the Bainbridge (DDG-96).

As mentioned in the LCS tech demo thread, over on dev branch "moving ship"/helicopter interaction is more smooth than in Arma 2 or earlier in the Arma 3 alpha or beta, and even ground vehicles such as the Quadbike can interact on a moving ship's flight deck, albeit awkwardly so at low speed (of the Quadbike, that is); no progress seemingly on people moving around on a moving ship (and thus the Holy Grail of "walkable" moving ships) yet though.

i think you are using the comparison with other AI to establish how good they are in arma. i dont think its works in this way.

scripted or not there's several lacks which make AI truly unrealistic in arma series.

but i do realize how difficult could be to create a good AI.

One word: MODS.

AI divers are somewhat useless, I agree to it however player divers are extremely useful. They can peak their head out of the water, plant charges on the AA or even lase a target from the water while you take it out from far away...

Also, when it comes to the good old AI, Zeus AI is there as a mod and its fantastic.

why should we use a mod to improve AI...they should just learn from what the ACE team has done with AI, just an example, and improve vanilla AI. im totally in favor of mods ecc. but we shouldnt being forced to download 1 of them just to get a decent ai.
