Low FPS in ArmA II: OA and DayZ on a High End Computer

Recommended Posts

I get 10FPS average in Cherno and 11FPS average in the wilderness. On SinglePlayer and Multiplayer my FPS count is the same.

My system is very new (3 days old) and should be performing at around 40 FPS in Cherno :(

It outperforms the GTX 660TI by a few percent.

The person in this video ( /watch?v=kjF8EKHNzIw ) gets very good FPS in DayZ while I don't with a better GPU , same CPU and a bit less quality RAM.

delete your configs and start game new.

cfgs for ArmA2 and OA should match (except the advanced settings for OA).

I find an SSD drive makes a large difference.. at least for me

Some important information missing:

View distance

Shadow detail.

Setting very high values for the first will slow it down.

Set the shadows to "very high". That is because otherwise the CPU will be processing graphic stuff, setting it to very high forces the GPU to handle it. ArmA is very CPU-intensive so you really don't want processor cycles taken up by the graphics unecessarily.

Haven't finished installing / tweaking my replacement i7-3770K, nor OC'd it but on my recently demised i5-750 @ 4GHZ & an HD5850 1GB OC'd to 775/1135 MHz (4MB RAM in XP, 8MB in W8) I got averages of 45 or so FPS in the E08 benchmark with asr_ai & tpwCAS loaded.

It doesn't matter. You're playing A2: OA. That's all. Use search.

There is something wrong definitely, FPS should be much higher with that rig. What's your viewdistance? Lower it first to about 1500-2500 m and check if you see any difference, it's the setting that pretty much determines your FPS with even the most high-end rigs. I'd not recommed to use those nasty registry cleaners, they tend to do more damage than actually fix things. And yeah, your system is screaming for SSD with that setup. Eg. Kingston V300 is cost-effective SSD (eg. 120 GB model is sold even less than 80€ in Europe).

What's your viewdistance?

Doesn't DayZ force a low view distance anyway?

Indeed it does, my bad. In that case there probably must be something nasty going on, with DayZ viewdistance the FPS should be much, much higher. Maybe it's caused by the lack of SSD, conflicting programs like over-aggressive AV and/or firewall, bad drivers, illegal Windows copy, or something else...

Oops, I missed the "XT" in the GPU description. That means it has the Tahiti core (I'm considering getting a 7870 XT, aka "7930" for my new i7 rig). On A2 without overcocking the GPU you could expect around 45 FPS depending on settings.

There's a comparison of performance in Arma 2 (and various other games) against the 7970 & the Pitcairn on Computerbase.de - google translated page here

Make sure that you have the latest AMD drivers. BTW always use Driver Cleaner or a similar program before upgrading/reinstalling the drivers, as the AMD uninstaller leaves a bit of a mess behind & that can cause problems. Run the AMD uninstaller first.
