Warhammer 40k Total Conversion mod for ARMA 3

Recommended Posts

Hi,

A small group of us with little to no ARMA modding experience are grouping up to produce a complete conversion mod for ARMA 3 using the universe of Warhammer 40,000. We are early in the planning phase and I am making this post for two reasons: to see if there is any interest in the mod and to see if anyone is interested in helping the development of the mod. Within our group we have a 3D artist and animator and a coder to start putting things together, but we are looking to expand our team massively before starting any development on the mod.

Warhammer 40,000 (Wh40k) is a futuristic setting where all-out war has taken over the universe. Multiple races and factions war over territory, resources and control utilising psychic powers, powerful infantry troops and a range of different tanks, vehicles and arial combat. We are looking to recreate the intricate detail of this universe with multiple stages of release, focused on initially creating a new gametype with a strong gameplay element backed up with some fantastic new visuals. We will then expand the mod as time goes on to include more of the diverse options available within Wh40k.

Gameplay is the key with this mod, and we are looking to focus on PvP development with objective based gametypes and at the core a persistent leveling and class based system, with multiple class trees and specialisms based on the lore and units within Wh40k. All classes will be capable of piloting any craft, and buying any vehicle or emplacement will cost requisition, a resource acquired slowly over time and in large amounts for completing objectives.

Development Aims:

1. Develop custom 3D models for characters and weapons for the two initial races and implement them into the game.

2. Create the missions using existing map and develop a system that manages requisition (TeeTimes currently manages all of this already - possibly my favourite mission!)

3. Develop custom 3D models for vehicles and implement resource requisition of vehicles.

4. Build the progression system and persistent data storage (more than likely per server not global) with class skill trees unlocking available weaponry.

5. Develop a custom environment with custom models and styling to more effectively match that of Wh40k.

6. Expand our available races once we have reached this point in development.

7. Add in psychic powers and other cool stuff from 40k!

We will be presenting more information about the mod as and when it is available, along with some more class progression details, races that will be available at launch and hopefully some pictures and images of things to come.

If you are interested in joining the development team for this mod then get in touch: xi0s@xi0s.com, I look forward to hearing what people have to say about the idea and hope that one or two experienced ARMA modders can get behind the mod and help us push the mod off the ideas board and into reality.

I wish the best of luck. If there's gonna be a total conversion, Warhammer 40k is the one. Would gladly contribute with whatever down the line.

I'm defiantly interested. Although doubtful how it will turn out. Every warhammer game that has ever come out has been terribad, and not true to the tabletop or lore. The only one I enjoyed was the warhammer mmo, and even that was meh. A total war style warhammer would be fucking epic though, not those shitty wannabe rts by relic or whoever made them. And if you guys focus on the tau I'll be pissed. They came out of nowhere, and suddenly there just a part of warhammer. Always hated them, never bothered to look up the crappy lore that was probably written describing why they where suddenly in warhammer.

Thanks for the responses guys, its nice to see fellow tabletop gamers anywhere.

@germ: We are currently discussing the order in which we will develop the races. It is a balance between difficulty to implement, providing a variety of distinctly different races and also balancing them accordingly. Our first race will be space marines (simply because it kind of has to) and our first alpha will feature only this one race. We will then focus expanding onto the second race and on from there to include more races. Currently we are considering imperial guard/tau as the second race, mainly because we want to avoid the marines vs orks that every game seems to portray at the moment, and also because humanoids will be quicker to implement. Balancing a guardsman vs a marine however provides somewhat of a challenge, however what a fire warrior lacks in terms of armour he makes up for in improved weaponry and vision options, giving them the upper hand in the dark. Personally I think the Tau could actually be a very interesting second race, particularly because of their extremely linear progression, whilst the caste system means you need to make early choices as to what kind of tau player you will be.

Personaly I would've gone with imperials guards first, then tau/eldar. Easiest infantry to get in-game and working rather ok considering their sizes compared to a normal human. http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/c/c0/PhilipSibberingSpaceMarineHeights.jpg

Also, to get started. There's a Fall Out W40K mod. It includes Imperial guard armor + weaponry and the same for Tau. Spacemarines are there lots of. I'm currently unaware if it's they who truly made their models, but if so, asking them could get the ball rolling a little quicker.

Just be prepared to prove that you didn't rip off models... I'm absolutely not accusing you of it and I have no reason to believe that you are doing so or would resort to doing so, just keeping that in mind since ownership of creative works -- and granting of permissions -- is taken seriously here. Otherwise, you've got seemingly sound ideas and high ambition, look forward to seeing what you make of things with this!

That sounds great!

Though I hope you focus on a small pack (2 man-sized races, 1 small map) first to prove the concept and get more people to join the team.

I also like the PvP focus.

Good luck with this

cheers,

D.

I've been waiting for an ArmA version of that OFP 40K mod for ages, this is great news.

Personally I'd go with Imperial Guard/Chaos first as it'd be a quick job to make some Chaos-Guard for an OPFOR team, and Guard seem to fit the gameplay of ArmA more than Space Marines IMO.

I can't see how this would work. If you're talking basic infantry then sure maybe, but there's a lot you'd surely have to leave out, hand to hand combat, all the mythical powers, not to mention some of the oversized units such as the Eldar Avatar

Hats off to you if you pull it off but sounds very ambitious.

Heh kind of a shame I grew out of 40k years ago. I used to be that heavily into it I can still remember how to put together 3d models of the stuff very quickly, such as a Rhino in about 3 hours.

Anyway I may still have quite a few models laid around on one of my hard drives, some of which were for another game projects that never took off. So shoot me a message if you would like them and I'll see if I can dig them out for you, two of which if I remember correctly are a IG Autogun and IG Chimera. Think I even have a Repressor somewhere.

On a side note you've just made a friend of mine very happy, he's been pestering me to do a 40k mod for Arma 3 since before Alpha.

Good luck with this project!

Regards Hawk.

I used to be the acting lead of the BF40K team a long time ago where we were working on Battlefield 2 and 2142 mods.

Sadly we never finished the mod. We never released a mod since our BF1942 game.

After some negotiation with ex devs and UT40K I handed the assets over so that the work would not sit on a hard drive doing nothing.

I do not mind helping you out in an advisory role.

I may be able to get you access to all the assets that were developed for the game for :

  • Imperial Guard Cadian Shock Troops, Static Emplacements & Vehicles
  • Tau infantry, Static Emplacements & Vehicles
  • Space Marine Blood Angels infantry, Static Emplacements & Vehicles
  • Environmental Assets

Not all the artwork was complete however and would require further finishing.

We also have over 180 professionally made sound effects and 2 professional soundtracks.

It would give your team a big head start there would be strings attached before I could hand them over. I also need agreement with ex devs.

I don't know how you would handle walker vehicles in the engine though. I doubt it is purposefully designed for them.

You could always do an Imperial Guard vs. Chaos Cultists type scenario just to get the ball rolling. Heck, the Imperial Guard aren't a far cry from some of the Colonial Marine style skins I've seen for Arma 2 (and even the future soldier Arma 3 skins) while I saw some neat post-Apocalyptic cloaked guys on Armaholic that aren't a far cry from what Cultists look like. I don't know if Cultists are still part of the 40K galaxy as I stopped playing back in the mid 90s after I sold my comic book stores (which were also Chapter Approved GW shops), but, back in those days, the Cultists made up a huge chunk of the cannon fodder for my Chaos army! :P
