I believe it is closer to 19-20 million.

Loopy is right, about 20mil of the blighters! Why do they do so good? I have learnt 1 thing bout the Aus population from living here for 2 years, sports is everything. There religion is football(not the english football, they play football on an oval with four posts at each end and run around in redicoulas small shorts. If the Aussie team didnt do good at the games, tjey would be lynched on their return.

how right you are!!! but to be fair to the English the goverment etc just don`t put the money into sport they sell off most of the school sportsfields etc to build supermarkets or carparks

Also unless you got good sponsors or in the Forces or have a really nice boss it is hard to get there.

where here(aus) they have sports academies that surport them also the english attitude towards sport if they loose "oh well we did our best an example the English rugby team a few years ago after loosing to the "All Blacks" oh we only lost by ten points a loss is a loss be it 50 points or one point where in aus and NZ(lived there for a while) there is a public lynching if they loose I know I was in Aukland after the all blacks lost to France in the world cup(rugby) I remember when living in NZ they have radio debates about who should be in the team and who shouldn`t I just think the attitude towards sport in Austrasia is the right one.

No! no no no! Its all about being a good sport and being good mannered. Taking part is the main thing, if you take it all to seriously you spoil the game.

I totally agree with you Paratrooper! Or Artillerier whatever you are. I like to play sport just for a bit of fun. Thats why I have never joined teams or anything. The Australian attitude on sports is way over the top. It ruins friendships! Espicially in primary school when its still important. Come secondary school they have other things on their minds like sex, smoking and drugs for most of them mad.gif People hate each other becasue they go for diffrent teams! Its stupid! Now people HAVE to win. In the olympics, when  the aussies didnt win gold, if they got silver or bronze, they were put down! Its like they HAVE to win gold or they are treated like they came last! And look at the Americans! If they dont win, they make it out like they did like in the World Cup, they were acting like they were the best team there! I reckon Senegal was. First time they play in the cup, and they got so high and got France back for beating Brazil. Nope, I think the English(not the diehard Football/Soccer fans although) have the right idea. Its just a game, do the best you can, and have fun(followed by a cup of tea and some bickies of course).

Maybe it`s my competetive spirit oh well only my opinion but I  don`t  agree with you about the hating bit hey I used to play league in NZ (northcoate tigers and Aukland Vulkuns)in the Lion Red cup.had a few Blues with players but hey once that hooter goes all good mates.

There is quite a funny story along those lines it when off as it does in cotact sport this Maori fella and myself went full on both got sinbined we were laughing about as we went off to our chairs for 10 mins after the game had a drink with him end of ,but the next weekend my uncle was getting married to a Maori girl guess who her brother was!!! were we a sight for sore eyes in the wedding photos!!!!!

Yes i must say that sport does hold its special place for me but seriously though/ It ain't just the aussies who take sport seriously. You can't say that most all professional athletes outside aus are happy enough to have a good time in some 3rd world country <cough> sponsers <cough>, i think you ge the idea. I must say that one of the reasons aus win is actually public attitude but it ain't just winning. I can remember my parents and the rest of my sporting team's parent would take us to the other side of brisbane (quite a long way) or <insert city/shire/etc.> just to see us play a game of sport. I see this more truly in lesser known/popular games here. Sport is something every country should invest in as it is something you can be proud in without going to war.

Sport has always been a big thing for me I spose being in the army has a lot to do with it.

Don`t get me wrong I think it is great you see the likes of "eric the eal" who go out and give there all and come in 1-2 mins after everyone else!!!

I just been brought up in a competive environment and yes When I played league in the uk I travelled between 70-80 miles to play to highest level I could although they payed my expenses.

Just the way I was brought up to be competive And I won`t apologise for that and no I am not being arrogant.

hope I haven`t offended anyone.

I don't think the UK teams should have been split up. I suppose it was supposed to seem a little less 'Imperial'. Politics should be left out of sport!
