http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?148171-Forward-porting-of-Arma-content

Hi guys,

We’re happy to see modding and user content up to a massively rapid start. We were blown away by the amount of user missions up within hours of release, and enjoyed playing with some of you on public servers!

We do want to add some clarity to the concept of forward-porting Arma 1 / 2 content into Arma 3, so here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

  • In general, you cannot simply redistribute data we shipped with previous games.
  • The only data that is governed by special licenses are the sample packages.
  • There are other, and accepted, ways of merging Arma 1 / 2 content into Arma 3. This is handled by releasing new add-ons that merge the content people already own via configuration files. We are working on an officially supported approach for later (similar to TKOH's Rearmed).
  • We urge you to treat each other's work with respect. Please ask for permission before you take someone's mod and port it.

Thank you for understanding. We look forward to all the awesome creations you are producing, and have several supporting packages being published as we speak!

Pay attention to the stuff in red - I think you can't distribute 3gigs of Chernarus, since that would mean that folks who hadn't payed for A2 would be able to play it. You can only release configs that would merge Chernarus into A3, not the entire map as a standalone package.

Um, how is this different or better than already following procedures for including Arma2 content in Arma3. Are you doing anything special here other than bundling up the necessary files?

Apparently, the only benefit of all your hard work is the knowledge you gained.

Yes, but do you need to? 95% of them work as is without needing to do anything to them. I've been running with Arma2 and other content for 2-3 weeks now. And it isn't just Cherno.

The point of this project was JUST CHERNO.

I guess I don't see the point then since it doesn't need anything done to it. It works as is. Unless I am missing something here.

Seriously?

So this gentleman cannot supply a file (pbo) that doesn't include the official PBOs of a proprietary map, but does allow people who own the original Chernarus, Takistan etc files to insert them accordingly?

  • If the answer is he cannot, I'm confused how that is different from the Arma 2 to Arma 3 mod in the other forums.
  • If he can, the answer (and encouragement) that should have been given when he first posted should have been recommendations on how it would be best to legally distribute his work.

Listen, I've bought Arma 2 about three times now in various packages. Each time I tell myself I'm helping an extraordinary company with an even more extraordinary base of players further a title I love playing.

But when I read threads like this, I just get disappointed.

One question, do you need to own Arma 2 to play this, or will it work with only Arma 3 and your download?

As mentioned above, its not legal to redistribute BI official content in standalone packages, you need to "bind" the games together through configs, like the AIA mod or TOH-Rearmed.

Think we need a mod to confirm if this is legit or not.

There's nothing in this thread to suggest that. At 3.1GB it almost certainly does contain BI's assets negating the need for people using it to own the original game.

Except it sounds like his method DOES include the original PBO's of Arma2 since it is 3.1G in size. If it were simply referencing them instead I would think it would be a few K or Meg.

I think the 2nd post was a good one and attempting to steer the dev in the right direction.

Seriously?

This mod is illegal if it contains ANY pbos from Arma 2. period. There's no dodging this issue, OP. I don't care if it's "only Cherno". You cannot put Cherno, or any other existing terrain, in an addon and release it. You want to make a config that adds Cherno to the game, sure, go ahead, but then again that's already been done so what good would it do? Sorry to be so blunt, but trying to save you the trouble of releasing this just to have it yanked.

Just to be clear again: You absolutely cannot release this addon since it contains the Chernarus map files. No exceptions. And since there's no other reason to leave this thread open, mods should close it.

That pretty much sounds like why it's not allowed.

Alduric if you have tweaked anything config wise, like lighting for A2/OA worlds, you are most welcome to submit them to the AiA project for integration. :)

I would recommend that you contact a Moderator to clarify if it is allowed to be released. But in my opinion you are breaking BIS EULA as its their original content.

You are not permitted to unpack and redistribute materials without permission, including the works of Bohemia Interactive.

§19) Posting addon/mod other content without permission

For many years this community has been known as the premium addon/mod creating community, people work tirelessly and in great detail to create fantastic addons/mods/missions/campaigns to release for free so that everyone benefits, including Bohemia Interactive. There are a few simple rules in place to provide the respect to these creative people/groups that they deserve:

The first and most fundamental rule is that you must seek permission to alter someone's work, to mirror it or use it in any way other than for personal use. No permission, no editing, no mirroring, no adding to your mod pack, no editing and sharing around your private squad, none of that is acceptable.

Obviously we cannot unfortunately control what people do outside of these forums, however on these forums you must follow this rule, if a person/team post a thread to share an addon/mod using content from someone else without permission and we receive a complaint then the mod thread will be closed until the issue is resolved and the forum member(s) risks being permanently banned from these forums for taking someone's work without permission.

This isn't just limited to re-using content in addons/mods/missions however, it's not acceptable to edit someone's work without permission and then to post screenshots of it on the forums (even if the edited addon/mod is purely for personal use), it's also not acceptable to edit someone's work, or use someone's work in any way that you don't have permission for and then to create videos which you post on these forums, doing any of the above without the permission of the original creators risks a permanent ban, for individuals, for whole mod teams or squads.
