I must be missing something obvious, but what's wrong with the fire mode indicator next to the stance indicator in the top right corner of the screen? Is this thing buggy or unreliable?

I would prefer the double tap option. One for showing the HUD and one for the actual change of fire-mode.

Thanks, that proves our point.

Pettka, in real life soldiers are trained to feel the selector, not look at it. And since it's not possible in-game, the previous method of checking the fire mode was designed. Currently, there is no alternative for that because the method you suggested would not work for most of the rifles in the game: The selector switch of the Mk20 and Katiba class weapons, as Greenfist shows, is way at the back of the weapon, which requires the player to twist his head in almost unnatural way to verify the current fire mode. It's not possible to use this method effectively in lower lighting conditions and it won't work for any weapon with a under-barrel grenade launcher; the selector lever on those simply shows single shot mode when grenade launcher is selected. And that is even before we add custom made weapons into the argument.

The current design just forces us to change the fire mode whenever we just want to verify it, and that's a step back from Arma 2. I am all for removing UI elements in favor of visual queues (I wish we had to look at the fuel gauge to determine the fuel level of the vehicle instead of having that in the HUD), but those have to be queues we can actually use.

So, can we get an elaboration on that? Maybe I misread your intentions, Pettka?

I completely agree with your points. Very well written.

Hey I know this is probably something everyone else has asked for on the forums but so far there have been few results. When is Bohemia going to start releasing new weapons & vehicles in ARMA 3?

They're working on it. Look under "Rifleman [Light]" in this picture:

On veteran difficulty it disappears after a while, which is a good thing. I think it's the HUD permanent - off setting.

Variable, Old_Painless

Thanks, that explains it. I always play at a customised recruit level.

Just checked the new dev branch update. Ai movement is still super fucked, no? They still drive forward, backwards, forward, etc. to try to reach their destination, which they just can't reach. This happens in my existing missions, in new missions and I just looked at it in the campaign and there it happens too.

Q1 2014 Countless improvements related to the animation tree and fixes of AI getting stuck under different circumstances (e.g. 20-01-2014 Engineer should be no longer stuck after repairing a vehicle)

OPREP Refactoring Animations

 thank god! fianlly! nice to see that! when making different test creatures i always noticed that animations are a major problem with AI. AI creatures without any anims always moved very effectively.

two things though:

Although we've managed to resolve most issues for players

1. i don't agree fully with that and i think that at least in the future it would be better to break these automatic/hard coded links between anims and weapons and instead make them controlled via config like the "handanim" parameters. so you can for example as a modder use the "launcher" simulation for a weapon without being forced to use the slow and clunky launcher animations. animations shoudl be cosmetic and nothing more. i realise that there's a gameplay reason that launcher anims are slow but for creating new things it's insanly annoying to have to make complicated anim work arounds just to use certain weapon slots or simulation types.

2. will we ever get our filthy modder hands on that node based anim tree tool that is shown in one of the screens in the oprep?

Done, I opened the virus chest and scanned the file and there was no problems.

Get NOD32 or just keep MSE (For W7 too lately), I wouldn't trust free AVs too much.

Yay!

Yay!

these free AVs are most of time better than paid AV ...

MSE is so bad that it failed all last year tests and MS even suggests to use normal AV alongside it :)

try think about: maybe because they cover more users in world than these paid solutions, hence more 'honey pots'

these days AV company w/o cloud solution and several automated analysis on super computers

(real super computer with 100s-1000s CPU and same goes for GPU) are busted

there is more malware in single day than this forum has threads ...

p.s. Avast is Czech company and HQ is in Praque ;) so I would trust them as I know some of theirs leading staff ;)

No update due to a Czech national holiday

I'm pretty sure it's an international holiday.

No update due to the projected aftermath of a Czech national holiday ;)

I LOLed.

As a person who cured more than 100 computers of viruses at the beginning of the career (as outsource IT), I cal tell from my own experience that all current free AVs are (or were, at least) a joke. They failed even where free KAV/Dr.Web utilities cleaned it up on first try. And believe me, I know what a kernel-mode rootkit is ;-)

Heuristics are not a silver bullet, and maintaining virus DBs takes resources. Obviously Kaspersky has more money... And more users, BTW ;-)

ye, if you so skilled then well then you probably know that developer of e.g. GMER works for Avast! ;)

he made aswMBR http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe

and I would not be so sure that Kaspersky has more money than Avast ;)

http://www.opswat.com/about/media/reports/antivirus-august-2013

anyway the point is, single AV can't protect you enough,

in today's world targeted threats and low intensity local malware is easy to be missed

even by the behavior cloud analysis

I was wondering if it was every going to come up in a future update to make it possible to see the Pistol when holstered as well as have a melee when up close and personal

Opswat doesn't seem to be a trusted source - their data does not relate to official numbers by avast/kav creators. But, in any case, having GMER author on the team doesn't cancel the fact that avast loses Kaspersky in every actual test.

That's what determines "good" or "bad" antivirus, not whether they have a "cloud". Unless, of course, one's personally involved and objectivity is not an option ;-)

sigh, what I said is that these days w/o cloud scanning and behavior analysis on the fly the threat from 5 minutes later can beat your just updated antivirus ...

these days, there is no 0 day, it's 0 hour or less ...

I use Kaspersky and Avast and NOD and Dr.web and many others ...

trusting in single product for security is pointless even the AV companies know it and cooperate officially

Speaking about clouds, will we ever see the return of the volumetric clouds we had in one of the betas, BIS? It looked absolutely fantastic. Please?
