One clearly visible reason for the better fps seems to be the number of objects drawn at a distance.

Here's a GIF alternating between two screenshots with the same settings in 1.60 and 1.61.

Lots of meaningless objects disappear when they're small enough. Good move IMO.

I guess most of us are happy over improvement with FPS :)

Good work BIS :)

Looks like they changed settings. They could leave available "LOW" preset only with the same results. That is hardly can be named optimization. Last time checked it was possible to set scene complexity with manual settings in arma3 config file.

I doubled my view distance from 6000 to 12000 and my object distance from 1500 to 2500 and the FPS has stayed pretty much the same if not somewhat better. GG Bohemia.

Only problem still lingering is the small FPS freezes when loading objects. HDD is costantly working when playing this game.

Regarding the HDD issue-I really can't recommend enough switching to SSD. I saw better performance increases from switching to an SSD than i did after switching from a GTX760 to a GTX980 and from an i54440@3.1 to an i54670k @4.2Ghz

@RoadRunner-i am having a similar error pop up, except instead of "gunparticles" mine says "full auto"and sometimes "heavy weapons"

You can tweak the visual appearance in the video settings AA && PP

or you can provide proper feedback here:

What are the object quality settings in the GIF? To reduce object details is a really "good move" to sell it as "optimization".

Objects very high, and the rest here (imgur).

Simply changing the object setting doesn't look the same to me. It also affects objects up close, whereas the dev branch only removes the insignicantly small objects far away.

Although, I can get about the same fps in 1.60 by lowering the setting, but at the expense of image quality.

eww thats a visual downgrade rather than optimization...

That's because of that GIF, in a real game play you'll never say, "Hey, over 5000m away, there's a fence missing!"

Furthermore, I think we should be happy that we see a performance improvement at all.

YAAB benchmark I gained 0.1 fps. Not sure 1.61 is going to be the god send folk are looking forward to... plus its not just the gfx that has changed, appears AI path finding or something has been too with impacts pre-set scenes.

Yeah, the image was a 1/4 crop of the whole screen, so most missing objects were literally 2-3 pixels wide. I don't think I'd notice when I'm actually playing.

0.1 is nothing; the margin of error is at least +-0.5 in YAAB. And it's expected the AI acts differently between major game versions, there's lots of changes.

*cough* at least it's less noticeable than LODs issues *cough*

It would be interesting to add a gif (same scene) with 1.60 stable changing from very high to lower to see the relation of image quality and fps compared to dev-very high.

Added: Action Menu Filtering (hiding action parameters for weapon switching)

Wasn't that already implemented a while ago?

Nevermind, seems I just recieved an e-mail from a few weeks ago.

  • Tweaked: Turrets on airplanes are now more properly supported

Is is possible to explain in what way support for them has been improved?

I remember various issues existing with plane turrets, like AI aiming, certain weapons being a little sketchy etc.

Also noted yesterday that apparently they use interior LOD, since in the Ghost Hawk I could see my own butt.
