Snakes in the Grass...or Sky

Recommended Posts

Here's my 1st mission for ArmA 3. There's a lot for me to do until it's even close to finished but I wanted to get it out to you guys. It's intended to be a SP mission but that may change if I ever learn how to make MP missions.

pic1mz.jpg

Beta Version 2.1:

[sP] Snakes in the Grass...or Sky

Link:

Version: Beta V2.1

We need to gain a foothold on the island. First you need to clear the Kamino Firing Range. From there you venture on further into the interior. You will also need to destroy communications if you want to use air support. Until those towers are down none will be available. Along the way you will rain down destruction on the OPFOR and hopefully gain the support of local rebels near the end of the mission.

Features:

UPSMON

Air Support

Artillery Support

Player group reinforcement

UAV operator

Required AddOns:

**None but I use the development version of Beta so you'll have to do the same if you want to play the mission. If you use the vanilla Alpha this mission will not work due to classname changes, etc.**

Credits:

Kronzky for his wicked UPS and Mosada for UPSMON

Saok for the Air Support, team reinforcement, armed civilians scripts and a bunch of help

I got the radio sounds at the beginning from someone back in the A2 days. Forgive me for not remembering, please remind me if you see this.

BIS

The community for keepin' BIS in business and thus keeping these games alive.

New to v2.1:

Just a few minor tweaks

Removed DAC

Added UAV operator(use team switch to use)

New to v1.96:

Air support fixed again

Added final objectives for this mission

More bad guys

Player team reinforcements

Artillery support

Other tweaks

Note: Though I've added new objects the is no dialogue yet. Just follow the tasks they give hints to the story line. I'll build all that stuff in later.

Known Issues:

**The optional missions do not check complete in the tasks menu. I can't figure out why but it doesn't effect gameplay. Also note the group leader needs to make it through the mission. I had to change him to an explosive specialist and make him required cause I can't figure out how to set it up so any unit type can disarm stuff.**

There is still no cut scenes, intro/outro, no radio sounds or dialogue. I'll work on that next.

This is a very early build. I plan on enhancing it as time goes by. This mission was not built for MP play. I don't know how. I will add all that in the future as well. The mission is very bare bones but I have really enjoyed it so far.

Note:

You can try to play this MP but it probably will not work. If anyone knows what I need to do to get it MP compatible feel free to let me know. I'll gladly make it so but as I said before I do not know how. Never made anything but SP missions.

Really happy to see another SP mission for A3.

I almost misread your mission title. I thought it was "A snake in the pants".....:p

Can you add another host? Gamefront has blocked Spain.

Thanks.

New version 1.1 up.

I added a heli insert but there is a problem. In order to get the second chopper to land you have to order the group to disembark (4-1). If any one knows how I can order them to dismount via trigger/script please let me know. Is there away to automatically order all units to dismount? I want the same command as pressing 4-1 when units are selected, just done automatically. It seems to be the best way to get the chopper to land and get the units to wait until the chopper lands before hopping out. The ways I tried they jump to their death once the trigger goes off.

I've also added a few more enemy units.

Besides that just small tweaks

I believe it's because I'm using the development version. They released a patch that changed the classnames of the OPFOR vehicles. Hopefully they'll release an RC soon that updates it for everyone. If not your gonna have to allow steam to access the developer version in order to play.

All my missions will be made using the dev version. I'm a whore for the updates even if they mess a few things up.

I see that the new dev build gives an error about the UAV Module not being present. Not sure why that was even in my mission but I got it fixed and will release a new version. Hopefully later this morning.

That reminds me, in order to play this mission you'll need to be using the dev version. I don't mind the updates and I like to be able to incorporate additions/changes BIS includes in the updates regardless if sometimes the may break stuff.

If you don't know what I'm talking about here's the thread for the change log. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?149636-Development-branch-changelog

And ArmAholic has a mirror in case mediafire don't work for you:

I want to know who that guy is in your avator. I've been meaning to ask that for years.

He looks like a Malaysian serial killer. I'm I right?

lol I'm not sure. I think it's someone that was picked up in the US for being an illegal. I had a fantasy football team named Dirty Sanchezes and this pic showed up when I did a google search for a pic.

lol!

The heli insertion isn't working for me. My viewpoint is as though my head is in my lap. Left is up, up is right, etc, the controls are jacked, if I manage to even swing my head it looks back at a headless me. The second helo will land but mine won't. It won't let me eject, it just hovers there then ejects me randomly but my team and the helicopter disappear. I know it's not your mission thats broken, and I like the helo insertions, but until arma is fixed can you remove it? It breaks the mission instantly. I have tried to point the helicopter to a different location, but since I can't control my head I cant look at another spot. If you can fix it so it lands though I really don't care about the view thing, but it doesn't appear to be your mission that is the problem.

Hmmm. I've never had that problem in testing. I'll have to see if I can recreate it. I've had my heli not land a few times but when I'd restart the mission it wouldn't happen. Not sure what's going on there. I can always just remove the insert. What I really wanted to do is have the insert be part of the intro and have the mission start after insertion but until they implement the SP folder I don't know how to get the intro to run. If you are playing it via the editor just delete the 2 helis until I can recreate it and find a fix.

Are you playing with any addons?

No addons using the dev version. Eventually i got it to work. A couple of times it would hit with one skid and drag but somehow manage to not crash. Pretty amusing. It may work better with a single helicopter. I also noticed that my helicopter moves to the position while the other hangs back, maybe it is sometimes not overriding the original move command. Looks like the mods are coming pretty fast now so hopefully soon we will get a fast rope addon.

I'm not sure what's going on with that 2nd heli. That seemed to randomly happen. I'll eventually work out a different method. I can't wait until we get a heli with a bigger capacity. I hate using those things.

After playing some more I think it might be that the spot where the second heli lands is one of the only suitable spots to land. It seems to detect that it's ok to land on the hill but it cant stick it. To get off what happens now is it will bump and everyone except me can get out, then it bumps 3 more times (always the same three spots) then ejects me and disappears. I'll play with the editor later to see how it handles landing there. It may work if you send the first one in let it clear then land the second, the only problem with that is it will probably land on one of the squad members (arma2 loved to do that), so they would need a move order. I don't remember which mod it was, but in arma2 there was one that let you do combat insertion where it hovered a foot off the ground and it would work perfect for this. It might have been a part of MCC which just came out for 3 but doesn't have that feature yet. Noorin has a 3 mod out, and I believe he wrote the original fastrope script, so hopefully it won't be long, but he might have some advice.

Once it's sorted you should tweak it so there is a random chance of it being hot when you land. One of my favorite things about arma is the odd chance of being shot down and dramatically changing the mission. You could also start from a carrier and make it so you can choose loadout via ammobox, and insertion style IE: boat, heli, or scuba.

Awesome mission though, now that I've gotten to play it some Im having fun with it, thanks for putting it out.

Edit: I also found this http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?150944-Landing-a-transport-support-heli-while-shooting-a Sounds like you may be able to force it to land using an invisible helipad.

Just a heads up, the development version just activated the SP missions folder. No need to play it in MP or the Editor

I need to post an update because apparently I have to open it in the editor and click save for it to work properly. Hopefully I'll have it posted in a few hours.

Updated to v1.3 in first post.

You can now use the Missions folder to play it.

Thank you, I appreciate that. Glad you enjoy it. lol I wish I could take credit for that. Kronsky and Silola's scripts make it so. They're fantastic. I must say it is pretty fun though. I've been enjoying it and I'm really impressed with A3. They ai teammates actually help out instead of just getting killed like they would in A1/A2. I can't wait to see all the good stuff that the release version and the community comes up with. I have a feeling I'll be making quite a few missions. There's a lot of potential in this game.

Hi, I've got the Dev mode going but still can't play your mission. I don't get it. Seems I'm missing something still.
