Battlefield 4

Recommended Posts

Ok thanks for info on this one.

yeah I am aware of Project Reality, lads done great work there and indeed the gameplay aspect changed to more realistic, but at that time there were not that much public servers running with that mod.

I kind of thought that vanilla BF3 will have some of that improved. But so far ARMA 2 does the job.

Commander mode is back.

Picture taken at a Gamestop: http://i.imgur.com/hlaAyJL.jpg

I think someone from DICE may have said this is happening also.

guess this will force them to spread the damn flags out this time and maybe bigger maps.

I think the more telling detail in that image is the line that reads:

Get access to the first expansion for FREE with reservation. $10 value!

So they're just setting all this up as a first step to raking in more money. Bet that first expansion will not be anything substantial.

A strange coincidence, yes, but I'm of the believe that it was indeed just a coincidence. After all, as you said, "a bad game is a bad game". ;) And truthbetold it was released/developed before the... seeming-resurgence-in-the-public-eye of PC really took off and would have made him sound even more tone-deaf.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that :)

As much as a bad game is a bad game, I think id's (essentially Carmack's) decision to change tack was due in no small part to the lure of the even higher revenues associated with developing for console as opposed to PC.

You mean higher profit... gotta distinguish between the two. ;)

I kind of thought that vanilla BF3 will have some of that improved.
Considering the trend in shooters, I'm admittedly surprised that you would have believed that BF3 would get more realistic instead of even less, when not even Arma 3 is currently not going any more "hard realism" than less but, as other people have both praised and decried, "plays a lot more like a shooter now!"
So they're just setting all this up as a first step to raking in more money. Bet that first expansion will not be anything substantial.
Nah, if you mean the preorder bonus... if it works anything like how they did BF3 in 2011, the first-print discs' online passes will also grant the Drone Strike DLC, but GameStop TV's already been calling it DLC which basically signals "it's going to be a paid DLC available later as well" -- I don't believe they're even really purporting it to be a pre-order exclusive? -- which basically means "just wait for Battlefield 4: Premium Edition".

I would not know the trend of shooters man, since ARMA is the only game I have played in last six years. And so far haven't been disappointed. Till now...

froggyluv, I meant the BI/Codemasters split... I'd figured that it had always been more about money instead of creative differences. I remember Maruk admitting that BI didn't even want to do a sequel to OFP after developing Resistance, they wanted to do a Wild West RPG next.

Wild West themed game on RV would've been pretty cool. All those vintage guns and of course gattling gun in the hugeass prairies that the engine can do = oh nom nom.

With CPUs that will be there in 3-4 years it can be populated well too...

Pretty much all of this, and it's become clear to me ever that post-DayZ-release BI -- and in particular Maruk -- have learned their own lessons too...

Fortunately for us Marek isn't a good suit yet. Although DayZ did deliver a seemingly unwelcome shift in priorities.

Hi lads, I haven't played BF since I tried BF2 [standard version]. I found that at the time as quite unrealistic run and gun shooter. Has anything changed since then

Battlefield was never intended to be realistic shooter and words like "Realism"..."Authentic" were never used to describe it in advertising until BC2/BF1943 appeared.

Even Medal of Honor was never advertised that way until Medal of honor 2010 and Warfighter.

Battlefield 1942 -Battlefield 2142 were considered team and tactical games. A team that worked together won.

Battlefield 2142 was the most all around well balanced of the series.

Titan mode REQUIRED teamwork, tactics and a Commander doing his/her job to win.

what you see in Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 is a direct result of DICE/EA trying to mimic COD

No VOIP, No Commmader, Barely working Commo rose, clusterfucked flags, invisible walls and stupid out of bounds areas.

Project Reality for Battlefield 2 was a whole new ball of wax, the problem is the limitations of the engine prevented it

from truly being a "Realistic" shooter like Arma.

I took it more as an admission that BI wasn't actually "hooked" on milsim from the beginning, and Maruk admitted that the company spent the first few years coasting on CWC's success.
Fortunately for us Marek isn't a good suit yet. Although DayZ did deliver a seemingly unwelcome shift in priorities.
Ehhh, it wasn't a "seemingly unwelcome shift in priorities" -- it was basically an unprecedented event in the franchise and the company's history, and it was basically a learning experience as the company's people collectively tried to figure out "how do we react"...

Then again, when the CEO himself is an admitted DayZ player and fan of the gameplay concept (and not just a fan of the money that it brought in) are you really surprised that it ended up shifting company priorities? :p

(Re: "CEO's personal gameplay preferences" influencing development and business decisions... apparently Cryptic Studios CEO Jack Emmert complained about the gameplay of Star Trek Online, specifically certain drops being too random due to a dev with really, really retrograde -- read: early Everquest -- ideas about MMO gameplay... cue the dev barely raising the drop rate but then retaliating against/spiting his CEO by adding an ever-increasing-per-death respawn timer. Later on the dev publicly declared that he would be revamping STO's PVP only to apparently do nothing for months and Cryptic had to hire someone else to do his job, which was the last straw. )

Ironic how it was the "future warfare" game that was also the most "tactical"? This is why I disregard anyone who complains about Arma 3's "future warfare" setting. :p

I've heard a joke that it's not that DICE was selling out, it's that collectively DICE are just bad at making/balancing tactical shooters and 2142 was the fluke exception that proved the rule.

If they fuck up 2143 I'm burning EA to the ground. :flamethrower:

I still remember the first time I managed to score a Titan Survival Pin for the first time ever.

had to lay down and catch my breath I was so freaking pumped.

Oh please, at this point 2143's more likely to come out as an Arma 3 mod than an actual EA/DICE game.

For me, it was fun watching this reveal, despite all of the scripted stuff and quick-time events, but i personally think Battlefield 4 was a little too soon. and it would've been nice if they had shown off the multiplayer, since that's what Battlefield has been all about.

"Winfluence" by some "anonymous source" doesn't sound credible at all...

I would definitely think EA is capable of that but this is nothing more but a random person claiming something which potentially hurts the reputation of BF4.

“For a small fee, a player can increase their ‘Winfluence’ in ten percent increments. What this feature does is randomly grant a user a win on their record in the event that their team loses. This will allow casual players to maintain a good win to loss ratio without the need to actually become skilled at the game. Simply put, winning will be more accessible in Battlefield 4 than its predecessors.â€

Lmfao, if that turns out to be true(which sounds insane) i guess BF5 will be playing itself and your stats is adjusted based on your microtransactions.

Just another another bullshit story to generate traffic to yet another slapped together [insert AAA title coming soon...] website/Blog

The "Your ad here" at the top right and "You can contact owner and founder, Jack, at p4rgaming at gmail. You can also throw money at him through PayPal at that e-mail address."

http://www.p4rgaming.com/faq

Do you really think anonymous sources within DICE are going to risk their jobs and livelihood to feed information to some dude with a website slapped together in 10 minutes

with a bunch of articles lifted from legitimate gaming industry journalists?

In DICE's case, I'm reminded of a story of how they once had an internal presentation crowing triumphantly at how Battlefield: Play4Free managed to make money on "pay to win" microtransactions in the face of doubters, protesters and boycotters, that they had succeeded in face of people who would claim that "P2W" would be a F2P game's downfall... think of it as what Infinity Ward and Activision must have thought of that one screenshot of a Boycott Modern Warfare 2 Steam group where the majority of its members were listed as playing MW2 -- or as pro wrestler Ted DiBiase (Sr.) put it, "Every man has his price... AHAHAHAHAHAHA".

The game is now in closed (pre)Alpha.

Infantry / Weapons

- Main weapons can be equipped with two sights - a scope and iron sights.

- Lasers: Red Laser Pointer and Green Laser Pointer. I'm guessing we'll see something else there too.

- Grenades: Normal Grenade, Flashbangs, Incendiary Grenade, Smoke Grenade.

- Gadgets: Two gadget slots. You can now have RPG or Mines + Repair Tool at the same time. No longer have to replace your Repair Tool in order to get mines.

- Pistols: You can customize your pistols with a silencer / flashlight, etc instead of having 20 different pistols (like in Battlefield 3). According to some people pistols have an extended barrel (needs confirmation)

- M26 MASS is customizable.

- Grips: Angled Grip and Foregrip

- Recon Class: Motion Sensor makes a return (Bad Company 2) and C4 goes to Recon (just like in BC2) Support gets the XM25 instead. Recon also gets 14X and 20X scopes.

- Soflam is now handheld. No more random soflams sitting in middle of nowhere locking onto you. Have to do it manually. http://cl.ly/PdVJ [cl.ly]

- Knives: there are different knives in the game, such as a shank knife, the regular Ka-Bar, and more.

- Knife attacks can be countered/blocked (only frontal attacks).

- Suppression is toned down for all weapons except the machine guns. The Support class is now the suppression class (can also lean). Every other class has close to no suppression (very weak, barely noticeable)

- You can activate a few bollards on the road so it blocks the ground vehicles. Your friend (or you) will have to go out and click on this thing next to them to take them up or down. http://cl.ly/PdUj [cl.ly]

- Doing more than 90% of the damage on a target will now count as a kill (so you no longer get random 99 assist or even 100 without getting the kill)

- Water: players can now shoot while in water, and they can sprint as well. Players can dive underwater as well.

- Ammo / Med kit: there are two types of ammo and med kits now, the larger ones which constantly heal/resupply, and smaller ones that instantly heal/resupply, but are used up immediately by the soldier. The normal med kit heals you extremely slowly compared to the Battlefield 3 one.

- VOIP will be availble on PC in-game. For all players and the commander. https://twitter.com/Battlefield/status/344513817784500226 [twitter.com]

- Battlefield 4 squads now include 5 players instead of 4 (no idea why not 6 like in BF2)

- Large HUD Map: It's way bigger than the one in Battlefield 3. http://cl.ly/Pctt [cl.ly]

- Spectator mode is confirmed. Very detailed and good. First Person, Third Person, Free Camera and one additional option that allows you to have the map open while looking at the guy's first person view (replaces the minimap) in black and white.

- All three factions confirmed. China is confirmed. US / RU / CN

- New voice-acting for the multiplayer characters. Some placeholders so expect more!

- Reloading: if you reload your weapon before it's empty, you lose the bullets in the magazine (just like in Battlefield 2) NOTE: Seems to be for Hardcore only (for now)

- New weapons confirmed (among others): MBT-LAW, RPG-7V2, FIM-92 Stinger, M320, Saiga-12K, P90, M4, M416, and Scout Elite. RPGs can lock-on laser designated targets. http://cl.ly/PcuI [cl.ly]

- “Perks†are given to squads depending on how well they perform / follow commander /squad leader orders. I think the way this works is you follow the commander orders so you can level up that bar on the left side which rewards you and your squad with perks.

- Minimap FOV.

Vehicles

- New vehicle disabling feature. It’s now based on where the vehicle is hit. Tanks can only get disabled by getting hit in the back (hits anywhere else will only damage the vehicle) which means you can still drive around even if you're at 5% health. That's what I saw on the livestream - correct me if I'm wrong.

- Helicopters in Battlefield 4 now have Night Vision.

- Chinese Type 99 main battle tank confirmed.

- Chinese WZ-10 attack helicopter confirmed.

- Helicopters have paint (?) http://cl.ly/Pd4R [cl.ly]

- Tanks have camo. If you look at the video you can see that the Abrams (US tank) has some jungle camo or whatever it's called. Hopefully we'll be able to switch between camos.

- It takes 5 shots to the front to destroy a tank (without reactive armor)

- Health Regeneration for the vehicle is either bugged or the developers are out of their mind. Currently it heals you even if you're on fire at 1% and can go up to 100% like this. Really bad. Needs to be removed.

- AC-130 has Thermal and Zoom by default.

- Vehicles do NOT have limited ammo. There's 6-7 120mm shells which regenerate overtime. If you shoot at infantry and a tank comes at you, you will definitely be at a disadvantage. Hoping for limited ammo with 50 shells that can be resupplied by the commander (ammo crate). The LMG on the tank has unlimited ammo. Have in mind that the supply crate from the commander is currently NOT working (will be added later on) so maybe they put the regenerate function so the tanks can function properly for now.

- The boats are mounted with 30mm HE and a TOW missile. Ejecting from the boat will automatically put you on some jet ski so you can run away. No more sitting duck in the water!

Commander

- Unlike Battlefield 2, commanders don't have a physical presence on the battelfield, so it’s 64 players + 2 commanders and 4 spectators. So we're going to have 70 players on a server (if there's any spectators watching). Here's a picture of 32vs32 + 2 commanders (so not really active players) http://cl.ly/PcTq [cl.ly] currently there's a bug that shows the commanders on the scoreboard (instead of just the bottom) but it has been confirmed that we will have 32vs32 + 2 commanders not taking up the slots.

- Commander can use a mini-screen to see what every soldier on the map is seeing (replaces the minimap) but you see everything on the huge map so it doesn't matter.

- Commander can give orders to squad leaders, who can accept or refuse the order (just like in Battlefield 2)

- Mobile Commander can only be played on tablets such as iPad - no phones are supported.

- EMP, when deployed, makes it so the enemy can't spot your team mates (3D spotting and 2D spotting - minimap) very useful when used on flags.

- UAV - you drop it over a flag or wherever you want so it spots the enemies for your team (minimap)

- Vehicle Drop and Supply Crate are in the game, but they aren't really available in the Alpha. Vehicle Drop will either be a jeep or a tank (not confirmed) most likely a jeep like in BF2. Supply Crates resupply your ammo and also repair / resupply the vehicles (MBT, IFV etc)

- You can scan the entire map every 30 seconds or so (same as in BF2) which shows you where the entire enemy team is.

- Just to clear this up - You can use the Commander Mode on ALL PLATFORMS. Using a tablet is an OPTION. You don't have to use a tablet. I don't know why many people think you need a tablet. You don't.

Other things

- Skyscraper - it is indeed a player controlled event. You have to hit the 4 pillars at the bottom of the skyscraper with a tank or C4 (not sure if C4 works) it takes 2-3 shots per pillar and you can't hit them all from one side.

- Sitting on the skyscraper (top or in the elevator) will kill you instantly the second it starts going down. I am answering this because many were wondering if they could sit in the elevator through the whole thing until it finally crashes into the ground. Not possible. You'll see a bunch of skulls going down with the building.

- As many of you have seen there's no blue tint.

- In Battlefield 3 RPGS can hit your tank (or any vehicle) a few meters behind it. In Battlefield 4 none of that happens. Don't forget that they're all playing with 1-3 ping tho.

- Mines are still present.

- Prone is back in the game. Not really "new" but thought I'd mention it for those wondering.

- Tanks don't seem to get stuck as much on random stones and chairs (ridiculous)

- Can't say for sure, but it looks like jets are back in the game (A-10, Frogfoot?). http://cl.ly/Pd4R [cl.ly]

- Commo Rose is back.

- Hardcore Mode is back.
