Soldiers appearance. Important!

Recommended Posts

Please bohemia understand this. the soldiers in arma 3 look way over the top skinny. either make an apperance customization or buff them up a little bit. soldiers need to look strong not little boys. they look way to small. even cartoonish i would say of how small they are. hell i have 18 years old and look bigger than those soldiers. Also there should be more customization options like. Knee pads. elbow bads. boots. the vests are great the helmets too. but thats pretty much it. we need a little more extensive gear selection. like knee pads. elbow pads. boots. etc. SPECIALLY KNEE PADS!

PLEASE DO IT! make them BIGGER! im not saying make them super big but just make the body more athletic like a real soldier. they need to look bigger. its funny to look at them like that. i whant to feel like those soldiers. i dont whant to be big in real life and in a military game be supper small. its weird. I know the team has bigger problems than a cosmetic change. but i dont think its so hard either its just a model change. and trust me there are even people that dont even buy the game because of that. (im one of them) me and my friends are waiting for the full release so the bugs are fixed and the soldiers look better.

PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION. DO IT.

They don't look skinny.

Strength and size are only loosely related. Only some soldiers weight train, the rest are conditioned for their job (which doesn't require them to be big)

Muscle tone>Muscle mass in most cases soldiers only appear larger due to all of the equipment they wear and the uniforms tend to be a bit baggy for mobility, they don't hug your body like a pair of jeans.

Manly men! Like Specialist Pat Tillman (R.I.P) or Cpt. Brian Stann

I think most people think of classic Mesomorphs like these guys when dreaming of Infantry or war heroes. Square build/jaw, stocky frame are reputed to have higher testosterone and aggression but by no means does it purely dictate that. Most guys ive known in basic military were skinny Ectomorphs but I do have to admit that most Special Forces Infantry I've known did pretty much soley tend to be Meso.

While there are many soldiers who look like this, many still look like this.

The military is filled with people of all shapes and sizes. I think it would be awesome to choose your own shape, body type, height, and etc in Arma 3. A game that did a good job of this was APB (All Points Bulletin). You could choose different heights and etc but the hit boxes were hardly affected at all and not even noticeable even though you could be 6'6 or 5'6.

I have read many accounts of the SAS (normally skinny, normal looking men) cross-training with huge, muscle-bound US special forces and the US forces not being able to last for long tabs and not keeping up with the SAS lads. Muscles aren't everything.

A long time ago I read an article about how when the US was in Iraq doing city, close quarters combat, having the ability to sprint across a street with your 50+ pounds of gear was more important than endurance, and thus, strength training for bursts of energy became important, while still keeping in mind endurance. A good balance is always key, but your missions dictate what is more important of course. A good example of this would probably be Navy Seals or the Special Boat Service. They require muscle mass to have bursts of energy and carry heavy loads, but at the same time, they need endurance and can't weigh too much otherwise it's impractical to swim and do tasks of that nature.

No your totally right here - 'muscles' aren't everything and especially when the great equalizer -guns - are added to the equation. Of course the two guys I posted are (were) both phenomenally trained high level athletes: Stann is a tier 1 UFC Middleweight contender and Tillman was one of the hardest hitting NFL defensivemen before quitting football and joining the force. All training being equal -Mesomorphs tend to dominate in most things physical.

That man can win a war armed only with his jaw.

In medieval times, yeah, he probably could have :)

I think the soldiers look fine. I wouldn't say they're skinny, they're just average "person size". It'd be cool if there was some units that were straight up Captain 'Murica, but I think the soldiers look alright. I think where it looks too skinny is that the uniforms look very "fitted" whereas in real life (footage is mostly what I'm talking about, I'm not in the military) the uniforms/armor/gear is baggier.

Also, I agree with MaceUK71, muscle mass isn't everything, agility and precision is something to consider.

I read many many military books and knows few soldiers, one of them being a small but bulky Navy Seal. God have his soul now, he died in a car accident few weeks after coming back from Irak. He was a very close friend of mine, rest in peace Carl …

One day I asked him what kind of body was the best for combat operation. This is what he told me :

Most of the guys who join the BUDS / SQT programs (Seal Training and qualification programs) are guys who trained really hard to be resistant. The program will need them to run and swim for miles and miles … so the guys will avoid weight training. Most of the guys will be fit, but not muscular. Even if some of them are huge guys, this is not that common.

BUT … as soon as they deploy, those who are seriously fighting, house cleaning and performing special ops will tend to get bigger and stronger. A physically fit huge muscular guy will have enough endurance to walk all day long anyway, no need to run a marathon. For him, he thought that the muscular power is really important in fighting situation, even more in close combat …that happen way too much while trying to control crowd or clean houses in cities.

So briefly, in his book: Endurance and skinny for the training. Strong and powerful for combat ops.

For sure, it was his opinion only. But it fits what I read here and there…

Eric L. Haney wrote in his book, that there were only a few american football type big guys, and the most of them were normal or skinny but very fit and persistent.

I'll have to look at them specifically with this in mind, but I've been playing and haven't noticed their builds one way or the other (which tends to mean they're fine).

I think they're perfect, I don't want soldiers with big muscles everywhere. Just normal people who doing their job in the army. :)

Guys, you are missing the point here.

This thread is about knee pads, not about jaws.

Look at very long distance runners. You don't see them having enormous legs that are square from so much muscle and look like logs, they've got pretty skinny legs, yet they run miles on miles no problem.

Replace the voice pitch slider with a weight and height slider and I'd be a happy man. The downside is that's easier said than done from a developer standpoint.

Long distance runners are primarily slow-twitch genetic types. That is, built for long endurance rather than fast-twitch who are built for quick, explosive, power moves ie.wrestler or sprinter. You can offset your genetic type to some extent by training in which muscle cells will actually start to hybrid -but enough goobly gock :p

While I too would have preferred a stocky (not muscle head) prototype for Arma, its not going to change now and honestly just ain't that big a deal.
