Postduifje 0 Posted July 14, 2002 Are any of you military or ex-military or just non-military guys walking the 4-days hikes in Nijmegen, Netherlands this week? Since I'm an inhabitant of the town I could give you all a warming up at 4 o'clock after getting absolute wasted in the city . I think many of you have at least heared of these hikes, at least a lot of Americans, English, Scottish, Swedish etc. are here every year to walk it.
Warin 0 Posted July 14, 2002 I would -LOVE- to do this. Walking the areas of Operation Market Garden would just be really cool. I'd love to see the Arnhem bridge as well. I need to safe up for a 'Battlefields of World War II' tour of Europe one of these days. It's all well and good to read a lot of this stuff, but it's different to stand on the actual ground and see what the terain is like..try to imagine it in 1944... Badgerboy 0 Posted July 14, 2002 A few guys from the Sqn did it last year. They said it was great fun, but painful. Believe me itlooked it. They couldn't walk properly for several weeks. But thats if you march as the military as we have to wear kit and weight in the packs.
Satchel 0 Posted July 14, 2002 We had taken part a couple of times, with 4x50KM 1997 beeing the toughest and 4x30KM 1998.I thought my feets were composed of raw flesh after my first 4 daagse march as we crossed the finish line on the last day. It was raining, socks all soaked up with water and sweat, the skin wrinkled as that of an old granny with blisters all over. We were situated in a coliseum of a school and had to get up every morning around 03:30 a.m, which was especially hard for those guys who drank beer or other alcoholics after marches. Enroute you meet lots of people marching from all different countries, from locals over to other nations military delegations, the landscape is also great. It was a very rewarding experience looking back, there were lots of people standing near the designated route, cheering all marchers up as they passed by, even very early in the morning. People were offering drinks or snacks, on the last day it was almost like beeing part of the tour de france or something, just crazy how many people there were standing left and right of the street. I can only recommend it to everyone who hasn´t done the 4 daagse yet.
