ANN NEWS AFRICA

IDAP, USMC Continue Duala Mine Clearance Despite Risk

Chris Walker, ANN News International

18 February 2027

The usual portrayal of the United States Marine Corps is that of a highly skilled force of soldiers smashing through enemy lines with enthusiasm and aggression, completing their mission first and mourning the dead later. But that is hardly the only side of this incredible organization, the smallest branch of the US Military that is singly more capable than many nations’ entire armies.

With the gradual withdrawal of the US Military from unpopular combat commitments across the globe, the USMC is increasing its presence in humanitarian operations. “The high level of mobility we have is a big asset with regards to getting food, water, clothing, and building materials to the right place at the right time,” Gunnery Sergeant Evan Miles told ANN.

“With the strategic shift the US Armed Forces as a whole are undergoing from direct military action to building stronger relationships through peaceful measures, we’re learning how to leverage our wide breadth and volume of assets to create situations where we are able to mitigate these less volatile situation. This allows us to focus our warfighting skills where they’re needed most, where application of force will be less likely to have undesirable long-term effects.”

One of those initiatives is making Marine engineering assets available for civilian charities for various humanitarian purposes. One of the missions they are participating in in particular is the International Development and Aid Project demining mission on the African island chain of Isla Duala. The Marines have sent several heavy armored vehicles to assist the clearing of mines from the demilitarized zone. “You know, it’s good to reconnect with some of my old friends in the Corps,” IDAP Explosive Ordnance Specialist Nathan Macdade, a former US Marine, said. “And it’s even better to see their expertise and their equipment being applied to help us deal with this situation.”

Click here to read the full story

One of those pieces of equipment is the CRV-6e Bobcat. The Bobcat is what’s known as a “Combat Engineering and Recovery Vehicle,” a multi-role vehicle derived in this case from a battle tank. While it is a very aggressive-looking vehicle, and it normally does mount a weapon system (which has been removed for this humanitarian mission), it is not a combat vehicle. Rather, it is designed to perform a variety of support functions that enable combat forces to do their job better, from recovering and repairing stuck vehicles, to clearing mines, digging trenches, resupply, and any number of other tasks.

Sergeant Miles elaborated: “The Bobcat is a type that came into service not too long ago, and my guys and gals and I are very impressed with it. It can do anything you need it to and do it well, and it’s high survivability and the ability to fit remote control makes it a perfect fit for the task of mine clearance. Our presence with our heavy equipment has allowed us to really accelerate IDAP’s mission here.”

A mission that has proven to be fraught with danger, as it turns out. IDAP demining missions have been the subject of occasional gunfire for as long as they have been operating in Duala. The Minefields were placed during the decade long war between Afrene to the south and Molatia to the north between 1986 and 1997, and hundreds if not thousands of anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines remain in the demilitarized zone between the two countries.

Both sides accuse each other of ceasefire violations, with the Afrenian government and French government (who has a military aid mission in Afrene) accusing the Molatians of attacking the demining mission. Last year, a mine clearance patrol came under such heavy fire that French Pioneers entered the demilitarized zone to provide protection and medical evacuation to the volunteers. “The fact of the matter is that yes, we have been shot at," MacDade said, "Who opposes our work here or why is not important to us, just that these actions stop. What the Marines are hoping as a side effect is that their presence will deter our attackers from performing their… hostile actions. In any case, we are not going away until our job is complete.”

IDAP themselves have not been without controversy recently, though. The CSAT military publication East Wind Magazine included in a recent article a quote allegedly made by MacDade wondering how a Dualan government official would feel about the minefields if a child of theirs stepped on a mine. IDAP and MacDade have denied the accusation, insisting that macDade actually said that he wonders “how they would feel about them if someone they knew stepped on a mine.” IDAP has since denied further requests for comment and interviews by East Wind. ANN Journalist Katie Doyle was present at that particular interview and corroborates IDAP’s version of events.

Operating in remote mode, the Bobcat's mine roller strikes home. EOD specialists from move on foot along the flanks to help detect and mark additional mines the Bobcat may not cover. Sergeant Evans and an IDAP volunteer walk alongside the "mothership"

The demining drone has a very powerful mine detector, which supplements the impressive equipment on the Bobcat. It is controlled remotely from the Mog

Russian VDV after capturing news correspondents at their chopper's crash site. The helicopter was knocked out of the sky by the EMP detonated over Washington D.C during the opening weeks of World War 3 in August 2016. Very early concepts for some Rhodesian Brush War Light Infantry. Not sure if there would be any interest in them.

Standard rifle will be a range of FAL's, both with and without camo.

Thinking of using a FAL IAR as there is no MAG around right now as the normal fireteam autorifle.

Mostly infantry, I don't think I'll make any vehicles.
