Major Fubar 0 Posted July 7, 2002 OK, I know I need Oxygen to import models into the game...but what are the best programs to build/edit models with before import? I've got Gmax and MilkShape...do I need anything else? I've got a freind who may be able to get me a discounted version of 3DS max through his work... Also, what about converting/importing different file types? I've come across some great free models out there, but in a wide variety of different formats (lightwave etc.)... Thanks in advance! KTottE 0 Posted July 7, 2002 Good, I got here before all the jarheads did (jarheads in this case = ppl who will only advocate the software they are using, and not giving a damn about which is best for OFP addons and so on) Now, since O2 only supports the importation of .3DS files, you should focus on softwares that can export to that format. Or if you have a really good converter you can use that. Best software for OFP addons would be 3D Studio MAX. Actually. I've tried Maya (through school), Anim8tor, OpenFX, Blender and some other underground apps, and so far 3DSM is the best when it comes to OFP addons. (NOTE, I haven't worked with Lightwave yet, so you guys out there who are using that for OFP addons, don't be mad =) It creates the models in a different way from Maya (I'm using Maya as an example, because that is what I have been using the most before switching to 3DSM) If you make a model in Maya and then export it, you are bound to go through 7 kinds of hell to sort the model out, and then it might turn out that O2 doesn't like your model (Happened to me, so I know...). And, of course, 3DSM can output .3DS files (without any errors) that O2 can read. So, if you can get your hands on a cheaper copy of 3DSM, I suggest you buy it. (I might add that 3DSM is fairly simple to use.)
Guest Posted July 7, 2002 I have access to Maya, Softimage and 3DSM through school and I have tried them out pretty well. My conclusion is that if you want to model then Maya is the way to go. If you want to animate or create IK then Softimage is unbeatable. After using those two programs going back to MAX is pretty hard. On the other hand MAX costs about 2000 € while Maya and Softimage is more then 50000 €. So, if you don't have access to them through school or work then MAX is the budget choice. As for exporting from Maya into 3ds format - there are some excellent third party plug-ins that do that for you.
Eviscerator 0 Posted July 7, 2002 well ive only used 3ds max and milkshape so i suppose i dont have much of an objective opinion, but as far as i can see 3ds max is the easiest to use
