Conventional Combat Emphasis

Recommended Posts

The "cog in the machine effect" is something that Arma2 lacked, Arma1 tried in some early missions (to few) but failed in design and charm. Its an incredible experience being a grunt in a big battle trying to survive and maybe get to kill a guy if youre lucky. It really dosent matter that your side will win the battle even without you, surviving and following orders is the only goal. This is the perfect kind of missions to get new players hooked on the game really, and learn stuff like infantry combat and tanks. Occasionaly you can scare the player by giving him jobs he think he`s not ready for, like ambushing a convoy. Only about 1/3 or halfway into the game do you need to give players more complete control over the mission, let your squad leaders to the job until then.

Don't really care what they do with the campaign.

Yep; my best times with Arma 2 were always with my own Mission Editor scenarios and Planned Assault.

Stealthy, small scale skirmish type missions, doesn’t have to be SpecOps, just well organised small units. Up river missions at night are really immersive, some great game-play trying to destroy enemy radar, fuel installations, etc, quiet infiltration missions with random enemy patrols including using dogs, floodlights, sentries etc. Music, laughter and chatting coming from the enemy barracks, dogs barking and the occasional sound of traffic.

The enemy being noisy and unsuspecting, whilst the infiltration force being quiet and stealthy, sneaking in and sneaking out (if possible), may not even be a shot fired on some occasions, just a timer ticking away until a big bang, in the mean time a frantic race back to the boat before that happens, hopefully without getting noticed..

Its great either way, if you get spotted and engaged or manage to complete without being spotted. Simple missions like that are marvellous in A2, hope A3 delivers the same.

Big or small, its all good in this series, well so far..
