Game Strategy

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Been enjoying the game as best as possible given the current issues with pathfinding and cowardly Carrier AI (although the Carrier AI issue has been mitigated a bit by the simple change to the script discovered by ElectricCarrier). Really looking forward to the upcoming patches to get things better.

Anyways - I was wondering - and maybe players of the original game can help me out here - what kind of strategy do you employ in controlling the islands? I mean, right now you can get into this "chasing your tail" scenario where the enemy AI carrier takes one of your islands, you take one of his... you retake one he took.. he takes another one...

How do you solidify a "lead" in the island taking? Is there a way to up the defenses on an island? Some have weak defenses and others pretty strong which i know can deter the enemy carrier. Is there a way to bolster the defenses on a "weak" island?

Also - destroying ports breaks the supply from that island ( i think?) . Do these ports get rebuilt over time? Can you force a rebuild of a port? For that matter - what about rebuilding a destroyed Radar or Walrus garage/Manta Helipad on the island if you destroyed them? Is that even possible? Is it done automatically over time?

Side question - does the enemy carrier follow the same supply rules you do? Meaning it will have to wait on replacement walruses/Mantas/fuel/ammo, etc from its stronghold island as well?

Don't think anybody knows that last one. I have the feeling he only has one set of units, as he has left them behind on different islands in my game, and when I went to those islands and took them out, he is now stuck attacking one island forever.

I believe everything on the island gets rebuilt after you take it, same if he takes one of yours, if you go back to re-take an island, everything is back to default condition.

For strengthening islands, any island that is connected to a defence island has its defence boosted, so if you have one island connected to 3 others, make it a defence island, that way it boosts 3 others (I think).

My general strategy is, arrive at an island, send 4 mantas with laser, rockets, shield and armour II to a tactical position nearby. Take control of the first manta and move in to the closest key target. At this point, I focus on the <P> and <H> hangars on the map, as those will continue to spawn enemy walruses and mantas if you dont get rid of them. Along the way, take out any turrets or walruses with pot shots from your rocket launcher, and if you happen to spot the radar dish, take it out too. At this point I ignore mantas as shooting them with the laser will slow down my main objective of softening up the ground targets. Once the rockets run out, return that manta to the carrier and switch to the next one. Repeat the process until all the <P> and <H> are gone. Now focus on eliminating any remaining turrets and walruses by flying around the island. Finally scout around for enemy mantas before moving a hacker walrus in to take the command centre, while giving air support in case of any leftover enemy units. If the island is classed as "weak", you may be able to skip a lot of time by just securing the command centre area with mantas, then airlifting a hacker walrus in and quickly taking the island.

For staying ahead of the enemy carrier, I headed him off at each of his attacks. I didn't want to kill him, I wanted him keeping me under pressure. As soon as you finish taking an island, head to the one he's attacking and let him flee before moving onto your next one. If he starts attacking another island while you are half way through working on one, do not leave your island, otherwise when you come back, it will have reverted back to default and you will have to start again. There was one point he took 3 islands while I was taking 1, but he made them weak so they weren't too hard to take back.

That point of the defense island boosting the others - cool. Thats something i can do then. Shame about the enemy carrier not replacing its losses (or not seeming to right now) - i guess that's another hope for a future patch/mod.

What's this mod you mention? is it on this forum?

The one by electroCarrier? Its on this forum. Its a small one line change to the code using the mod tools (CarrierTools to unpack the files) also on this forums.
