Star Citizen - from the creator of Freelancer & Wing Commander

Recommended Posts

Well I'm in for the long run now, got my game package, will buy some more ships next week when I get my new SC pc finished (in build). Hope the game goes the way it promises, I think it may, well I hope so anyway.

Some of the modded ships for SC are really incredible, a new one called the ‘Redeemer’ (below) has just won $30,000 and will be part of the game. I think you can view it in the hanger (limited time), find out next week when its all installed. Although all the ships in-game look incredible to be fair.

I have the Constellation package, I will be mostly trading when finally playing in the PU, but will have fighter support via AI or human hire, in an escort type situation, plus some other cargo carriers running other routes, they too will have fighter support.

I’ll buy the other three ships I mentioned in my first post (last page), when its all installed next week. Probably collect a few whilst waiting for release, which at the current rate they're moving, I should have a cargo fleet with support ready.

I like the hanger idea in the game, so you can look around them, also the walk through detail of the ships is pretty impressive.

Said I needed a change, think this could well be it (fingers crossed).

Redeemer Gunship (not my video):

_______________________________________________

Below here, is a video (not my video) of the ship I have got (will see mine next week), its the Constellation. The hanger I get with the Constellation package is in the top video (deluxe hanger), hangers are modular, so can be increased in size as you collect more ships. They also have other compartments in the hanger (not in video), I haven't seen these yet, must be leisure type areas for crew perhaps.

I am still fiddling with the controls of that game, but I can say that in my eyes the ships feel different and like they have some kind of soul ;) (they dotn always fly where I want them to)

I have to say that watching this video gives me a much better sense for the atmosphere than watching a Elite:Dangerous trailer... I like it :)

The UI is a bit to much "in your face"

Indeed, I think pilots'd be better off with sound cues instead of lengthy vocal warnings for everything that happens.

Without becoming too scientific here: Thats actually a pretty interesting question. Though sound cues might be shorter, they also allow a higher frequency and might become indistinguishable from one another at a certain rate. Additionally, the pilot already has to navigate in 3D and work with several visual cues. It could be that too short sound cues might lead to some kind of cognitive overload. But I'd love to do some research on that. Sadly, my work department is not focused on these areas.

Nevertheless, the design of interfaces for orientation in space is not very progressed at the moment, as far I know.

Yeah, I just picked up the Phoenix, its a nice luxury people mover, should be fun. Just hope they start pushing some playable game material out soon, AC is not really that great.

But I suppose they'll get there eventually, just hope I live that long.:D

I like the fps trailer, hope they pull off this "all-in-one" game although if they succeed I'm afraid I'll be worse than those people plugged into Matrix.

The Constellation commercial isn't good though,it needs a sequel where in true human nature the next step for the crew is to load-up and start vaporizing the local population.:tounge_o:

Actual FPS gameplay including zero-G combat :)

Also ship combat starting to shape up nicely after the last patch 9.2

I watched this fps demo over on the CIG/RSI forum.

It plays to the COD, BF4, TF, etc crowd, but certainly at the moment its not looking great, fps wise, graphics of course are great.

I thought the fps part of SC would probably be a pretty basic run and gun affair, its looking that way. Other teams could make this different, if played in another way, more tactically. But the general way it was shown, is pretty basic shooter stuff.

Not really very impressed, yet.

But it is early days and we're yet to see the AI side of things, but I'm not keeping any fingers crossed, it sort of shows where its heading..

Disappointed, but not that surprised..

I hope that deadzone's going to be adjustable. I don't mind a deadzone, but there's a point where things get too... floaty or something.

I think Elite might be actually the better game when it comes to serious Space gaming.

How on earth is this game supposed to run on a regular PC?

MMO + insane graphic levels + tons of other stuff. I mean i like the ideas and all that, but i hope they can also pull it off technically and to a consistent level.

And i have no idea how everything they planned will be even possible with a 50+mio budget (still rising but still nothing like AAAAAAAAA titles). I hope of course they pull it off successfully but all the additional features and plans they mention in 10 for the chairman and others... its insane.

But the general way it was shown, is pretty basic shooter stuff.

The players where only basic shooter players too. Hear the commands? Pretending to be ultra tacticool but in the end just running towards the enemy behind each other. On the other hand - why would it need more then basic shooter stuff? The interesting bits are the ties to the persistent universe/ environment. The shooter in on itself would propably extremely boring after a short time. But here it's not a single map you play over and over but a specific thing you do once to achieve something else. So in that aspect its very unique. Also the zero G - you dont see that very often.

Good point Fennek, what we saw was basically team deathmatch Call of Doody style -but everything changes when your ONE persistent life is on the line. You might see tacticool guys tactimutiny to gtfo of there if the tide turns against them too much. Hell, there are guys spending in the $1000's for these ships in RL, how will this effect their bravery when RL maxed out credit cards are also a stake.

Which brings me to my next point -this is all a good sign for gaming. From DayZ to SC, people want stakes. They want to feel real danger, and consequences to their actions that may be irreversible save a brand new start-up. The antithesis of COD. Whether this ripens into masterpiece or dies a fiery death, dis gonna be good.

It would be nice if the weapons recoil changes your trajectory and speed in zero-G.

Illfonic (the guys building the FPS module) did an AMA on reddit a few days ago.

Apparently, only certain weapons will have recoil strong enough to affect your trajectory.

Anyone of you guys bought this beauty already? I'm really tempted to spend some of my valuable Euros as I totally love space games. But I'm completely confused by the different packages and find them way too expensive for a game that's not even released yet. I'd throw in like 50€ tops (~65USD). So, within my budget are like 4 four packages with Beta access. Still not sure what I get when buying one of them. What do you guys say? Do you have first hand opinions? What packages did you buy if any?

I personally won´t even look at this until it is really finished. The whole thiong is a bit suspicious. The game is very far from release but RSI is already making tonns of money by selling people virtual ships (unreleased ones) and promises.

Really people, just wait until the thing is released....

I spent 30$ on kickstarter (an Aurora with lifetime insurance, access to alpha+beta and the "two" final games), that is all I will spend in the future for it. You will be able to get all the ship with ingame money. Don't spend hundred or thousand of euros for something that nobody knows if it's worth it.

FPS module is not impressive at all (apart from the graphical aspect), hopefully it can only get better.

Now the real question is to know if every single module will work as a whole when the game will be finish.

I hope the game is going to be pretty close from the first promotional video that we saw.

What I don't get, it's that people still giving money to the project, they collect more than 60 millions $. It's completely insane.

If they screw the game, many will get pissed.

@Tonci87: True. This game is so overhyped that - from a subjective point of view - the final version can only be disappointing, even if it's a good game by objective standards. I'm not really a friend of early access and stuff. I bought the Arma 3 Alpha but only the cheapest package (i.e. not the supporter edition) because I was afraid it would be crap. In retrospective I would have bought the supporter edtion but you can never know. I tend to buy games when they're on budget, like on steam sales or so, even if it takes a few months / years after release. 50€ for a 6-hour CoD is way too much for me. But I've played the living shit out of Freelancer and I still install and play it every other year, probably until it won't run on new windows versions anymore. :D So, I feel it's about time for a good spaceship game and Star Citizen looks amazing. Still, I'm afraid of buying just an overhyped tech demo after all. Then again, the cheapest package with Beta access is like 36€. Reasonable considering there is at least some content, even if it's just flying around a bit to see the game mechanics and graphics. There wasn't much more in A3's Alpha.

@Papanowel: Thanks for clearing that up, I was afraid you could only buy new ships with real money and not with ingame currency. Saw a vid of the FPS thing, looked cool but the shooting was nothing special I agree. I'll think about it but I'd only choose the cheapest package I guess.

Before you buy anything you might want to take a look at this game

I too was really into Freelancer (and fuck you Microsoft for not making a sequel) so I know what Roberts is capable of and to be honest his games were always more about the flashy effects and graphics than they were about good space combat or great depht. So I´ll definately wait until Star citizen is released before I judge it. (Star citizen has made much more money than those 60mil. They are constantly selling ships and ship concepts to people, it is insane!). Elite on the other hand is close to release and it looks quite good.

Backed both of these SC & ED, plus StarForge :( and a few others.

SC, as said in my earlier comment, FPS is bad, but its early days. Not sure how they connect high tech force field barriers with guns that still fire bullets and have iron sights... 1000yrs ahead.

I have the Constellation (Phoenix) and a Freelancer (can't remember which model), plus an Aurora LN. Deluxe hangar with acces to the others beneath that (not the asteroid hangar). Its money badly spent really, I'm not sure this will come out right at the end. It will come out, just not as it was intended. Graphics for the ship cockpit displays have already reduced from the 3d swirling stuff we had at start. More like the flat ED cockpit displays now, good thing really, or we would have been playing on our own in mp.

I hope it will be good SC, but really they shouldn't have bothered with the FPS side of things. Mainly because it will get judged on its worse part/module, that will probably be the FPS side. The game/universe they are creating, is really now out of control, saying yes to more or less everything is not a good idea, watch 10 for the chairman. He's got to learn to say 'no', more..

ED:

Backed this with an early Beta buy, this is just Elite as it always has been. It won't have much longevity, too large, with little to do. They need to make it more than just a case of reaching Elite status. Not played now for a while, after earning millions of credits, with little to do with it. (only briefly looked at Beta3)

Evochron Mercenary does it better with seamless planet landings, although the planets (PG) are pretty bad to be fair. But it is a few years old now.

I'm watching Limit Theory plus I've backed Empyrion and also have early access Space Engineers. Space Engineers is a great sandbox, but may be limited later, with what you can do. But really its all about building, survival etc. Empyrion (copy of SE) takes it to the next step, planet landings etc. But not sure it will reach its target on KS yet.

StarForge .........:butbut::mad::( where's the rope..

Space Games.. There are going to be many, which to buy... 'None', wait a little.

For me now, probably the cheaper SE or Empyrion (if it gets made). SE being the best buy of them all so far, game play hours and interesting, wise.

Limit Theory will be for hardcore space sim players I think. ED will fade after a year or so, like the others in this run. And of course we will still be waiting for the PU in SC until 2017/18 probably, I'll be knocking on 60 when that comes out. Waste of time and money, both of these games, even at the lowest early in price. Don't do it wait till release, better still leave it for a few months, into spring next year maybe.. See what happens to both these SC & ED.

Get SE, happy hour only £14.99..:D:p

My only advice is, reminiscing about old space games from the glory years (were there any :j:), can be costly..

@Tonci87: That looks brilliant as well, didn't know about that! Thanks for showing me this beauty! Though it's also like 60€ for a god damn Beta access - too expensive for an unfinished game, even too much for a complete game. Still tempting.

@ChrisB: I saw Space Engineers on steam before but it didn't really get me.^^ Not sure what I should think about Elite, it looks good and offers more content than Star Citizen but it's too expensive. I don't know, maybe I just dig out my old copy of Freelancer and install that one again. ;) Or I'll check out Star Trek Online, seems like it's free to play now. But considering that there are so many space games in development 2015 could be the year of space exploring for me while this year was dominated by Arma 3.^^
