One North Korean warship sank and about 30 sailors were believed to have died.

North and South Korean warships have exchanged gunfire near the western sea border, prompting fishing boats to flee the area.

Some reports said several South Koreans were injured in the 20-minute clash near the Yeonpyeong island in the Yellow Sea.

A North Korean vessel was reportedly towed from the scene in flames.

A South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman, Lieutenant Yoon Won-joon, said a more details would be released at a news conference at 1300 (0400 GMT).

The incident follows a series of series of border violations North Korean vessels over the past months.

On Friday South Korean officials said that two Northern patrol boats briefly crossed the Northern limit line, the de facto but disputed maritime border between the two Koreas, before returning to the North.

They said another patrol boat entered South Korean waters on Thursday.

Three years ago a series of border violations by North Korean ships sparked the first naval clash between the two Koreas since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

I should be a journalist..

fuck! again?

last time NK lost 1 ship and 20 men.

now again?

that island where it happened is way up into north of DMZ line, but is occupied by SK. every citizen there is trained in riflery and has M16. Korean Marines guard their too.

the fire fight happend from 10:25to 10:50, though not extensively.

SK lost 4 soldiers, 1 missiing 18 wounded.

SK ship that sank had fires in control room and sunk while being towed back.

Sk did warn NK to stop violating the line, but NK opened fire first.

The Koreans have been doing stuff like this for more than 50 years. Yes, it's a bad thing, but I hardly think that it will precipitate World War III. Though I wouldnt be surprised to see a regional conflict of some sort flare up.

That would draw the US in, but I can see China and the US moderating thigs to help cool things off before it got to that point. Even if North Korea is one of the Axis of Evil. biggrin.gif

Am I the only person that doesnt really see another full blown world war ever really happening? I think the dynamics for a conflict like that...and the conditions needed to spawn a worldwide conflict as being in the past. Though it's easy to see many little bush wars like the first Korean conflict happening continuously.

True, any 2nd ID soldier will tell you how much shit goes down on the DMZ on a daily basis but I meant all of the shit that is happening right now in conjunction. I smell a major conflict. Can't give any insider info though.

There is alot of shit going down but it doesnt seem to me yet like its all related and it always seems like we (US) step in and form more dmz's and proctection and shit wherever there is a conflict, which might be good or bad I dont really know. I dont think any peacekeeping efforts can last forever so I think for the most part they are useless. It forces them to stop fighting for the moment and always atleast one of the sides ends up hating the US more. When people want to kill eachother it seems history has proven itself they gotta do it and get it over with before there is peace. Just the way it is I think.

i agree with Warin.

even when SK president almost got assasinated in Myanmar/Burma in early 80s, they did not goto full scale war.(though SK lost a lot of cabinet members).

they have been doing it so long that it's almost annual ritual. most of the time, ill-equipped and ill-trained NK gets bigger casualties. I think even in this situation, NK probably lost more soldiers.

a few yrs ago, some NK soldiers fired upon SK position in DMZ. SK fired back with .50 machines guns and etc. result? no casualty in SK side, except some bruises suffered while tripping while running, but an ambulance was spotted moving to NK base.

NK seems to provoke this to agitate SK/US, but public opinion about NK from SK only gets worse with this. and today is match btw SK and Turkey.

so probably NK does this to make sure that it has image of a tough guy, while if full-scale war breaks out, they know they will be anihilated.

just recently, a NK ship tried to sneak into Japan, but was chased and later blew itself up in chinese waters. so they are not giving up their idiotic coldwar mentality of military might solution.

*EDIT: right now pact btw SK and NK is not a peace treaty, but a ceasefire treaty. so technically they are still at war.

I agree with USSoldier11B, because USSoldier11B seems to have more of a clue then me biggrin.gif . Seriously though I think that in this day & age, the short sightedness of bloodthirsty generals is not very common anymore with after-shocks such as military revenge and world economic sanctions and etc. being very powerful persuaders. Then again, some superpower such as China, Russia or even the US could offer to fuel the conflict if the conflict is started. but with this "$h!t" as MDRZulu would say, is probably going to blow over.

I'm afraid I agree with that somehow. The hatred is just too deep to be let go by them.

By the way, why do people always think WW3 is coming every time one person shoot at another? It really takes more than that.

Well, if one side kills more then the other side, that side that lost more, wants revenge, so they start shooting at them when they get the chance, then the other side wants to have revenge, then who knows, Vetnam might get involved, and other communist countrys to.

I also heard, that everyone that turns 17 in South Korea, is forced to join the army.Just in case North Korea invades South Korea or something.

Well a South Korean ship was sunk, is this slap in the face going to be ignored or returned? Thats the question. But I expect it will be forgoten. At the same time remember the First World War was started by one shot in bosnia...

Well at least the SK soccer team doesn't have anything to worry about, they've been exempted from all military service.

If you want to watch a really good movie about the DMZ in Korea, watch a movie called JSA: Joint Security Area. It came out I think in 2001 in Korea, and it's a really good story how guards from SK an NK learned to put aside their differences and get along, but just like that the peace is broken again.

This has been fairly commonplace the last decade or so. When I was over there, there was a gunboat battle and a DPRK mini-submarine ran aground full of spies.
